I replaced my busted old manitou with a new 26" markhor, on my '01 specialized enduro fsr. It's much lighter than the old fork and feels great on jumps, drops, and burms along the trail. It's brought new life to my old bike!
I have that cheap Manitou on my Santa Cruz highball, my boss XC legend Kevin Evans rode it and he compares the feel to a fox 32. That's good enough for me!!!
I think there are many manitou models, probably you have a higher end one, paricullarlu with a tapered headtube. I have a manitou marvel comp that came in my rocky mountain vertex, is a good fork just a few more tire clearance would be appreciated.
doing videos on budget stuff is fantastic but you pretty much read a specs sheet for them and compared how popular they are, would appreciate talking about how well the fork actually works.
It's what he does for all of his videos, isn't it? He's a salesman... that's his job. Good luck finding anyone who would be willing to review these affordable products at the expense of their own time, and probably money (to purchase the forks in advance), I just don't know if it's a viable part of the market to be getting too in-depth about, especially since people who want to know all the nuances are probably on their way to wanting something even better anyway. You'll never get a good review on this stuff, consumer reviews are from people who don't know any better, and actual reviews are from people who would have to pretend its good, when they know it's far from the luxuries they're riding on their own bikes.
I mean none of them wil be great, just a bunch of options... So you can get a few different options to fit your bike (Straight steer/ QR/Boost/ Koniy steer etc)
Your right i have it, and removed the red spacer to bringing travel to 120mm! Light &smooth as.my rock shock recon on my stance 1 ! Pd 240 $ it changed the 2019 schwinn al comp for the better with more slack in the head tube angle .sweet ride...
I just upgraded my old and gorgeous Ironhorse Warrior 3.1 ( 26" ) completely and that Rockshox Silver TK 26" was the perfect application .... Of course , I removed the prongs since I'm not using them and plugged the holes . Great fork . I love it .
Hey guys I normally do not post comments but thanks alot for this video it's much appreciated. Helped me make up my mind... I was going to pick up the rockshox 30 silver and after watching this video Im gonna grab a Z2 🤘
I know you don't sell them at WC which is probably why they didn't make the video, but the whole X-Fusion line is killer in the mid-range! I've got an old Enix and a newer McQueen with the more budget RL2 dampers and couldn't be happier with both
Thanks guys im glad you released this video its helpful to guys like myself that are short on funds to support our hobby. I am all about the Manitou Markhor on my trail bike I beat the living crap out of mine being 300lbs and if I could afford the dorrado for my DH bike I would buy in a second im so impressed with the weight and performance with my fat butt on it. I have a review about it but the travel adjustment was pretty easy to do surprisingly.
I just ordered the Manitou Markhor…at 300lbs, how much air pressure do you ride with? I weigh 255 and they recommend 120psi for 220 rider. Should I add more or leave it at 120psi?
depends on which version you get. I just got the 120mm version and you can't adjust the travel, infact you can't adjust the travel on any of the Recon RL 120mm forks no matter what model year it is, but you can on basically all the other versions. It sucks because I would have liked to make my 120mm a 140mm travel fork.
Its just old fox tech bud. The rail damper was on old fox forks. Its no where near a grip damper. Rockshox has the charger damper for that competition.
The lowest priced hardtail I'm aware of that comes stock with the Marzocchi Bomber is the Vitus Sentier VR. $500 fork on a bike that's going for $1250 and they haven't seemed to cut any corners to equip the fork at that price point. $500 fork, $750 for the rest of the bike. Can't beat that as far as I know. Any other bikes at that price point with the Bomber?
kinda late but the Radon Cragger 7.0 (2022) is even better at 1050 eur (no tax, or 1299.99 eur w tax), it got Magura MT Thirty brakes, modern geometry, really good components, etc.
Was looking Into a radion, I've heard mixed feelings but its gotta be better than my turd I have now. It's a suntour xcm34 100mm but it has barely any movement and rattles my hands to bits on any type of chunk
Wizdom Werks I was in the same position a few years ago and purchased the Sr suntour Epixon and couldn’t be happier. Later though that frame cracked and is now on my brothers bike and has been working great
im not a fan of the sealed damper cartridges of lower end suntour forks, they tend to go wrong and can only be replaced as a whole. Also the air negative spring is a coil compared to a self equalizing air spring in more expensive forks
Thanks for an excellent vid. I've had 3 of the RockShox 30 Silver TK, 2016, 2017 and 2019. The 2016s are great, I had them fitted to a 26" hardtail and I've struggled to better my times on some of my favourite trails even with higher-end forks/bikes. I replaced them with the 2017s because the 2016 200hr service kit didn't seem to be available any more. The 2017s are awful, oversprung and massively overdamped even with the rebound on minimum. I spoke to SRAM about this and they said at about that time they were using a different 5w oil so I changed it to Bel-Ray 5w but it made no difference, they just feel totally dead. My 2019s are identical to the 2017s and new in the box, I haven't even cut the steerer tube yet. These feel the same as the 2016s even though all internal part numbers are the same as the 2017s so RS must have changed the damper or something. I might try some 2.5w oil from a MX dealer for the 2017s but for now I've just taken them off the bike, had a set of 2008 Fox F120RL so I threw them in instead
I have 2020 TREK Roscoe 7 and it came with a Rockshox Judy Silver SL 100mm fork. I've been riding it pretty hard and really feel that I need a beefier fork and one that rides smoother. I live in Vegas and the trails here can get VERY rocky. Just today, going down a trail called the Late Night Trail - I felt like I was at the limit of my fork's capabilities. There were some pretty hardcore rock gardens and some steep sections that I took on and it was kinda eye opening.....I also walked a bunch of them. In any case because of this video I just purchased a RockShox 35 Gold RL 120mm as a replacement. I'm looking forward to feeling the difference and getting some smoother rides on the trails! Thanks for this review!
I got an used recon gold rl for 26 wheels, quick release, for 60 euros (around 70 dollars) WITH the handlebar lockout. The fork has only two tiny scratches, although i think it is a 2010 model. Perfect for my dirt jumper build. I also use a rockshox domain 303 (unpopular squad where ya at?) on my main bike (can be seen in my profile pic). Fun fact: The Rockshox Domain forks with the serial number and date code ranging from 9T8XXXX to 43T8XXXX and with the steel steerer are recalles because the steerer could snap in half right at the crown. Guess what? Mine is 28T8XXXX.
DNM USD-6! Seriously, I've just gone from a Cane Creek Helm Coil to The DNM USD-6 and I can honestly say that it's freekin awesome! It has controls for rebound & compression and it has a pointless compression lock out too! It's a very supportive fork but supple too and any concerns about twisting are unfounded. The fork is very, very well built. Easily on par with any of the big brands and judging by the cheap DNM forks I've seen over the years, with their anodizing intact and still supple, I can almost guarantee that the USD-6 will be equally durable. This does not feel like a fork that cost me only $213, yeah you read that right, my previous fork, the Helm Coil cost $740, over 3 times the price yet I honestly prefer the DNM. Note; that's not to say the Helm was a bad fork, on the contrary, it was a great fork, but the DNM just feels better to ride.
Markhor! Markhor! Haha! Jeff, you a funny guy. That video on that Markhor animal was pretty funny too! Nice job on the video explaining the differences for people. Keep it up and thank you
I currently have a rockshox recon 335 with 140mm travel on my 2012 SJ elite. Its left over from my previous bike which was a 2009 Kona Dawg Deluxe. Ive stayed consistent with my 50 hour and 200 hour service kits and it honestly felt better to me then the 150mm fox talas that the stumpy came with so i sold the talas and used the money to buy a set of Azonic Outlaw wheels. The 50 hour service kit (lower leg: oil seals, dust seals, fork oil change, clean everything with isopropyl etc . . . ) i do myself but the 200 hour kit ( full rebuild) i order the parts then take it to local bike shop that has a really good suspension mechanic, older dude who started racing bmx,4x, and xc back in the early 80s. The fork still feels great and I have no legitimate reason to buy a new one other then my stumpy is a 26er and i want to make it a mullet, plus anothet 10-20mm of travel wouldnt hurt, i bottom out my fork my often then my shock anyway (rear shock is 140mm of travel as well). Would anyone reading this recommend the rockshox recon 35 rl in 150mm or the bomber z2 in 150mm and why? Im open to both but leaning towards the bomber. I live in the bay area and spend the majority of my time on loose over hard single track thats either flat flowy and fast or super chunky and techy with rocks/roots galore, and the rest of my bike time is spent sessioning one of the many local dirt jump sets.
Thanks! And we left the weights out of the video and for the blog article, link on video description. At this price point we feel features and function are more important than weight as all these are fairly similar in weight. 🤘
Last year I got a 465€ deal on a 130mm Yari. Seems like I had a good deal. ( and internals can be upgraded to Lyrik internals :) ) I love the looks of that Manitou fork. I didn't know they make MTB forks, I knew them from some heavy industrial equipment, and they are French. I would love to try one out some day...
My idea of an upgrade is to forks which will work with what I have and go from rim to disc brakes. By keeping the post mounts for rim brakes, I can use those mounts for older brakes as mounts for something else. Which I have in mind already. Other manufacturers are Rim, or disc, I NEED both.
OMG Thank you so much because i needed this more than any other bike video right now, I have the rockshox recon silver with the QR vs the thru axel which really sucks so I need to replace it.
thank you guys so soo much ive been looking for a suspension fork that will do its job good has 120 mm travel and isnt to exspensive for my 27.5 inch mtb and i just couldnt find one but now i finally know whitch one i should get thank you !!!!
I just installed a new 2021 Rockshox Recon RL 32 on my bike last night and it's crazy how much better the 2021 version looks compared to that 2019 version. The 2019 version, to put it mildly looks cheap. The 2021 version definitely doesn't look cheap, although I wish I had could have found the matte black version instead of having to go with the gloss black.
Jeff, any chance of an updated version of this subject? I'm a heavy rider so 32mm stanchions don't work for me and I can't decide between fox 34 vs the rockshox 35mm forks for xc+ riding.
The fat bike is just a cheap chineese basher called "The Rock" made by "CANNELLO" and it has the stock standard non suspension forks on it that the bike came with when purchased but if you have been able to find them on the internet you will see the look of the PASAK TRIPLE TREE AIR SUSPENSION FORKS will make the bike look really good, also i am 100kg but im not a fat guy, just been training for a long time and im a very thick person, also i m 44 years old going on like im a 10 year old kid, if you like to have fun i believe that you must have a younger side, hopefully you have been able to find and see the PASAK FORKS and you will see why i like them, thank you for your fast reply, Jay, stuck in thai.
really REALLY good video. great content laid out well. How would answer this video if u need to replace a 160 travel or greater fork in the same price range? please, thx!
I bought an older Dual suspension Raleigh MTB last year for $100. The Manitou shock with remote lockout now needs a rebuild and new rebound adjuster. I think t would cost less for me to just buy a whole new fork, but the fork I'm looking at cost three times what I paid for the bike. 😄
What would be the biggest difference between a rockshox recon silver versus the manitou markhor? I'm going to get one of them, but unsure of which will perform the best
I just got those Manitou's, 2018 Markhor, trying to find any of these forks was a bit difficult so I had to overpay on top of shipping to Canada but 👌 my hardtail needed an upgrade
Great channel.. I enjoy cross country, not a lot of jumping, but I have a 29 tapered Rockshox tapered straight steer. I am on the heavy side, I have been looking for a Reba Race, but they are hard to find.. maybe rockshock gl
The pandemic has really exhausted supplies of MTB forks..I was trying to get the RockShox Recon Gold RL but none was available at local shops as well as Amazon and even WWC here. Seems like every vendor only stock certain models and only specific wheel size and travel (29" seems to be the most widely available as I'm struggling to find a 27.5). I was even willing to compromise to top up my budget to get a Reba but even that was unavailable. But I can understand that retailers can't be stocking every model/wheel size/travel/RL & TK...
Do you have any knowledge or reviews on the PASAK P-35 TRIPLE TREE AIR SUSPENSION FORKS, $250 budget chineese forks. Thank you for your time and any effort you put into checking the forks out.
Hey Jeff, love the vids. The import duties for stuff from the States are killer, as in buzz killer, deal killer. Do you have a European outlet or any plans for one. Failing that do you have any recommendation for a European shop/online outlet that has a similar ethos to yourselves. Running a Solid Summit 26er but as a road bike cos I'm too old and beat up to go on the trails ! Definitely in need of a new front shock, the Manitou R7 that's on there is even more beat up than me !
-X Fusion Metric HLR (350$) for Enduro/Freeride -Suntour Rux (400-500€) for DH -Suntour Durolux 29 for big Enduro -Suntour Auron (400$) for AM -Manitou Mattoc Pro (300-400$) for AM Maybe you can even sneak a X Fusion Trace HLR for about 500$
Great. Do you have the weights of these forks. The rockshox sites don't have good weights. All my forks are working well, also picked up a fox 34, much stiffer but very light.
I want but cant find gold stanchions for my newly powder coated black/gold Kona. And I've been told you can't paint/powdercoat them. Whatever color they are is what they are.
I don't understand why the prices of the Bombers are so different here. I'd have to shell out 600-700 Euros for the Z2, and 900-1000 for the Z1. And why do they come with QR? Is there a way to have one without QR? The Yari RC for around 450€ seems to be a much better deal.
