I love how what seems like a gag at first, them constantly arguing about who is the original, get's later revealed to actually be a very clever psychological trick on themselves to keep from establishing a hierarchy based on who is or isn't the clone
It’s also a great motivation, by establishing the idea that the superior one is the original it makes it a competition to surpass the other. They are constantly competing with someone equally strong and intelligent making them motivated to grow and become better. They both have the ultimate rival and teammate.
So as time passes they become more and more intelligent, since they push themselves to be better than the other and both retain all the memories after every clonation?
@@goatlover6312 And the strongest / most clever one lives to kill the inferior one. Much like Sith. Becoming better with every generation (at least mind wise).
Most likely. They bring up how when one of them knows who the clone is, it never ends well. That is likely a reference to a point in the comic where one of them got this nasty scar on his face so when he did create a clone, they both knew who the clone was. This resulted in the clone killing the predecessor. So odds are something similar happened in the show's timeline where one of the twins did realize he was a clone and killed the other.
Most likely. The original probably couldn't comprehend one of their clones killing him, since he knows he's the original. That's why later down the line, the clones stopped making it obvious who the original was.
Love how they're always thinking realistically. If they know that they can't win, they'll surrender. They know that their chances at escaping prison are better than winning the fight against Cecil's death squad
I love this great writing, even for "minor" villains, not just being killed off in a one episode or season appearance and just to make the heroes/protagonists level up. Without someone trying to go into comic spoilers for me, I'm interested in what their true goals are, besides trying to kill/attack the president and white house.
@@ThatScythe By the last chapter of the comic they help clean up a certain spoilers mess, and when invincible comes to stop them because its been a while and he thinks they're villains, they basically politely explain that they were only ever evil because their cloning science was illegal so they had to resort to criminal activity to be able to do it
They also only surrendered after the rest of the force decloaked. That confirms to Cecil that they still think of themselves as a threat. If they had just surrendered to the first few troopers, Cecil (and Pete) would have been a lot more accepting of them. Similar to the 2012 Avengers movie where Black Widow asked Bruce Banner to come with her. After Bruce agreed, she told the rest of the force to stand down.
I love how the twins break the stereotype of strong/aggressive being stupid by having the skills to make advanced cloning technology and the critical thinking ability to create an energy gun from parts around their building
Yeah they're a somewhat comedic play on smart villains that are also strong (e.g Bane). The comedic aspect of it is the fact they behave like educated, even nerdy tacticians; but also like colossal meatheads. I loved them in S1. Hope they eventually team up with cecil (I haven't read the comics pls don't spoil anything for me)
It would be funny if the original just remembered which seat he was on and then went by that. But that could cause jealousy and anti-trust. So the clone could kill the original so he could be the oldest of the two. And cause a on going diversion.
I like how the Mauler twins still have sympathy, like how he said sorry to Pete cause he knew it was going to hurt, or when they warned Robot that the cloning process may be to much for him.
They may be bad guys, but it doesn’t make them bad people, they have reasons for committing crimes and doing what they do, and while the ends aren’t enough to justify the means, they still have hearts, they still feel things such as remorse or mercy
Mauler getting shot in the eye actually had two purposes. Not only was it a hilarious hit to his arrogance, but it also served as a way for the audience to tell the twins apart. Ingenious really
Same with one twin wearing his full prison jumpsuit, and the other one only having a tank top. And later, one having a lab coat, with the other just in his normal clothes.
@@a-man3179 In the comics they establish that neither is the original, and whenever there is clear evidence that one is original, the clone usually kills him off and makes a new clone based on himself, so he can be the original.
So I know that we're already onto the fact that the Mauler Twins are both super strong and super smart, but *being able to recognize foreign machinery AND its power output just by listening to it?* I love this show.
@@unusualusername8847In a later scene he shows up again, alive but covered in bandages, using a medical collar and having his arm in a sling, with every single finger splinted
I feel like that’s a universal gag for a character to have gestures portrayed with another’s limb (like holding an unconscious person’s hand, disconnected arm, or a skeleton’s arm). Not a bad gag, it’s just interesting to see it in multiple projects.
According to them, it never ends well when a clone knows they're the clone, since it would likely lead to infighting and resentment toward the originals as the clone is considered to be inferior. Consequently, this could drive the clones to terminate the originals for its position.
I mean that’s exactly what was shown during the prison break, one twin had finally achieved victory over the other, and the “clone” was ready to throw him to the wolves at the soonest possible convenience and restart the cycle all over again
'Kill that one and move on! Your eye is as replaceable as you are.' 'I am the ORIGINAL!!' That exchange always makes me laugh. Kevin Michael Richardson's delivery is incredible. You almost believe he's arguing with himself.
@@terrelldurocher3330 I always wondered why they didn’t make 4 or 5 of himself? I’m guessing it’s simply because of the concept of twins. No reason to make more because the twin is simply there as a backup in case one dies. Hilarious way to achieve immortality.
@@digiornopizza1918 "Too many cooks spoil the broth" or something. My headcanon is that more Maulers will make them bicker much more and they won't be as effective. Two Maulers is the sweet spot. EDIT: I've found an explanation that more than 2 would make it obvious who the newest clone was (since you only need one to copy the memories) and would result in either enslavement or murder. So the "sweet spot" theory was kinda correct.
He once cloned himself but the original had a scar that proved he wasn't the clone and treated the other as an underling. The clone quickly killed him and made a new clone with both of them now arguing over who is the original clone
7:05 "dude, i saw it on reddit" "dont belive everything you read on the internet, kid" The teenagers never mentioned the internet itself, only reddit. This means that the Mauler twins know what reddit is.
Hey, maybe they also know what Google is a search engine. They would obviously know like 1 of the 3 most well known sites. Did you ever consider that they hide their research and programing/software for their machines on the dark web well enough to keep Cecil from finding it? To further back my dark web theory, building machines quickly is one thing like they did against robot. Writing and programming code is time-consuming no matter how quick a typer you are.
Imagine how smart the original mauler must have been for these guys to still be great scientists and engineers despite being copies of copies of copies
Their cloning process is perfect, they could copy themselves a billion times and still be the same with no loss in their function. They just like to bicker with each other on who the clone is as it keeps them motivated.
@@WizelBalanis this confirmed or a theory? Because I always assumed this, that they were 1:1 perfect but that the argued just to piss each other off for the sake of competition and “sibling” rivalry, arguing just to argue lol
@@WizelBalan there not perfect they are slowly degrading with each clone but its very low you can bet the original did not have blue skin and black nails these are defects of replicating the same information over and over. As for them calling each other the clone this is more to remove the origin paradox believing the self to be the original thus born naturally and the other born as a homunculus what the origin paradox is its like cancer of the mind where you get wrapped up in your own mortality that you end up destroying yourself at the end as you view yourself an abomination so two outcomes are a result one being you kill yourself to end the mental pain or you kill the one you believe to be a clone with the mentality you was always the original because the original could not be beaten by a replica. This is why cloning is bad and wont work.
I like when the mauler twin knocks out Pete he has to do it two attempts because he likes Pete and does not want to rip his arm off, so he holds back and gently knocks him out… if that’s a thing 😂
That's what happens when you have to deal with your exact consciousness and sub consciousness implanted in god knows how many clones. All he does is talk to himself and the way little events in their lives diverge the same exact person. Otherwise he might go totally insane. I'm positive they both know they're not the original but when a clone creates another clone it's up for grabs to claim they're the OG.
Sounds like something that even I would do just for the shit and giggles. No doubt that the Maulers would have done it with a more utilitarian purpose.
i liked how they always had Run The Jewels playing in their scenes. it fits their characters well and i wish more shows did this where a certain band or artist is attached to a character
These 2 are my favorite bit from Invincible. At first they seemed like a one off gag, but they’re quite the interesting character. Intelligent, strong and not pure evil, shade of gray tainted by accumulated madness from cloning
That’s what I like about Invincible. There are characters you believe are going to be important that are immediately killed & then there are characters you write off as unimportant but later get substantial parts in the story.
This is a very strange type of immortality that the Original achieved. While he is likely dead, his clones continue to live on and learn and grow as individuals. Fantastic concept really. Its funny, I thought they would be throw away villains to set up the heroes. Glad I was wrong.
It’s so fucking refreshing to see a brute force villain talking about medicine, biology and engineering stuff. I didn’t know how much I needed it until I met them.
The Mauler who knocked Pete out was neither of the ones who were brought back to prison, since they were cloned out of the Mauler who ate the pie and only have his memories. So techincally Petes' grudge in the end is misdirected
Thats true, but depending on how long those two Maulers had been around,, their personalities probably werent different enough to where the other one wouldnt also have done it.
@@lol._.1450 bullshit. You dont just help an inmate because he has your arm and can hurt you. Your job is to make sure they cant get out. Your logic is so flawed in every single sense that you make byakugan users jealous.
The collar they put on the immortal wasn't built wrong, they just used the wrong password. The password wasn't the whole book, it was "the entire text of frankenstein". Those exact words. Robot was ahead of them the whole time.
If season 2 gets made, I think the mauler twins can definitely be an asset against omniman or any viltrumites that come to invade earth. While pretty selfish, they do show sympathy to Pete and are sad for the death of the original robot, so they may still be turned hero, if not at the very least antihero. Also, I am not surprised if Cecil recruits them to some suicide mission, mostly because he recruited the guy who made cyborgs out of humans, and that guy was much worse than them (advancing humanity technologically by making humans into unfeeling killing machines)
@@JoeFanik okay but the comic writer wants to fix their mistakes with the show so don't always assume they're gonna do everything that happens in the comics
Not having read the comic, I'd think that if they teamed up with Cecil it would largely be in their abilities as genetics experts since an open plot thread is Cecil's attempts to unravel the mysteries of viltrumite DNA. The Mauler Twins as they are now aren't nearly strong enough to threaten Omniman, but it's possible that they might steal that DNA somehow or help to create some weapon that's effective against them.
I'm surprised a billionaire hasn't tried to hire them to clone his body and copy his mind into the younger one. The billionaire then introduces his adopted ward who will be inheriting the billionaire's wealth/property/influence. Or for a dark version where a person is kidnapped, their body cloned, and the memories copied over. The copy is then interrogated/tortured while the original is left in a cell. There can even be several copies being matured at a time, so by the time they break one of the copies they can just copy the mind over from the original and start again.
@@iiWoody He also voiced Tartarus in the Halo 2 Video Game. He voiced Joker once too. Ron Pearlman voicing Conquest, and Michael Ironside voicing Thragg would be awesome. If Michael Ironside can voice Darkseid then he can voice Thragg.
Plot twist that I could totally see being a thing: BOTH of the twins are clones, and always had been because the ACTUAL original made his first two clones at the same time from afar, and made sure neither suspected the idea of them BOTH being clones at first. Now the original Mauler perfects the process behind the scenes to ensure that, should anything happen to BOTH the twins we and the world know and love, the next batch is already alive and improved.
Actually it's pretty obvious by now that nether of them are the "original mauler" neither the original clone, The "I'm the original" it's more like "I'm the first one" It is implied that the original died long time ago and these two along the future or past ones are clones
The one small plot hole with them is that they still should know which one is the clone. They would rember which bed they lied down on. One would know that they woke up on the opposite bed, and know they are the clone
They probably designed it to omit certain things such as that yes perhaps a leap in logic but also omi man exists and so does immortal so it's not that crazy in comparison
Not quite. It’s mentioned in the series how it gets messy when one of them knows they’re the clone. To prevent that, there could be something encoded into the machine. Maybe it deletes the memory of which table. Maybe it creates a false memory of which table during the copy process, but leaves the original in the original.
It transfers all long term memories but probably not all short term memories, meaning that they don’t completely remember what happened leading up to the cloning.
@@KingCarrot500 in the show, maybe. In the whole verse, not really. All you gotta do to be more powerful than Cecil is be better than all his contingencies. Nolan was almost there in the show, absolutely there in the comics. And a lot of characters in the comics will be there too. Spoilers: Angstrom Levy, Dinosaurus, most pure-blooded viltrumites, absolutely Thragg, space racer, Allen, the flaxans, and even mark. Hell, even some of the lesser villains like omnipotus and doc seismic are better than everything Cecil could throw at them (though idk if that’s true of show Cecil who tends to have more tricks up his sleeve than superhero teams and reanimen)
8:35 *"Oh shit, here we go."* LMAO, the way Kevin Michael Richardson delivered that was hilarious. What I interpreted he meant was "Oh great, not another dramatic goodbye scene."
These characters are so interesting. I love the way they seem to look at life from this eternal perspective since they can just clone eachother and live through eachother for ever
Every time the Twins where on Screen the show got elevated. They are smart, smug, dont take shit, take shit if they have to and are just a pure delite. They are literally smarter than most characters in the show. I love them and how they never overstay the welcome. In univers and out of univers.
"WHERE IS OMNI-MAN?" It was at this moment Mauler realized they were in IMMEDIATE Danger. They surrender immediately in hopes that Immortal doesn't kill the both of them, nor do they say anything to provoke him, Prioritizing survival over whatever plans they had. Love the Mauler twins man.
Twin A: "It's the REAL Robot!" Robot: 👏👏 _"[Well done. Perhaps you are the original, then.]"_ Twin A: 😏 Twin B: 😠 Always freaking loved that part. Lol!
0:45 Great Foreshadowing: Despite having impenetrable skin, their eyes are still weakpoints, just like when the Immortal put his thumbs in Omniman's eyes and they went bloodshot.
You'd think that the genius that is the Mauler Twins would know that Frankenstein was the doctor, and it was Frankenstein's monster that needed a jolt.
The funny thing about how each time they make and thusly clone one another is that it damages their brains slightly to where they cannot ever tell who the original is. And if they are able to recognize one another they become increasingly aggressive till they kill each other. So its safe to say the original was killed by its clone ages ago thanks to the ego and inability to admit it was or could be inferior.
It goes into detail in the scenes that weren't shown. But when their brains are scanned to the new body, their memories, experiences, ideas, and personality are identical. They both believe they are the original. It's not damage, it's that they truly believe they're both the real one and nothing could convince them otherwise.
The machine doesn’t damage their brains, they intentionally do this, It’s explained that if the clone knows he is in fact the clone, he would grow resentment and try to take place of the original by killing him. Also they have done this procedure so many times that there isn’t a true original anymore. Just identical clones to the original producing more clones when one of them dies.
THey are constantly trying to outdo each other to prove who is the original, so their intelligence and problem solving abilities constantly grow. And since the more ruthless clone is usually the one who surivives (as we've seen here - one was wondering what to do, while the other simply used the first as a meatshield), their every iteration is getting more and more dangerous.
I know that criminals that kill are obviously bad and we label them as monster stright away in any series but I like how they show these characters as complex as they are, they don't always use reckless violence only when it's necessary or the situation calls for it and they actually have some humanity in them or at least a bit of integrity
By logic, The Original Robot is dead while the Rex clone with a copy of Robot's memories killed and replace the Original Robot, Can say the original will not go to what the clone will do later in comic
Not if the clone is a perfect copy of the original. It only starts degrading once the DNA does, and since they’re both essentially the same person, there’s very little chance of that happening
@@JamesTAdams It stands to reason that the actual original perfected the process alongside how to make perfect copy/paste of his own knowledge and memory unto a clone. Of course as per the twins own admission, knowing who is the clone and the original never ends well, so it's safe to assume neither of them is the original, they've always been clones, but by having that constant conflict it forces both to strive to be better than the other, so should one fall, the better one keeps the legacy going. It's nothing short of genius.
I think those kind of issues can be circumvented with how many times the Mauler Twins clone themselves. The bigger issue would be if the original makes a clone after becoming horrifically scarred.
Each twin has a totally unbroken line of memories going all the way back to the first Mauler. However, while both twins live their memories diverge, and are only resynced by one dying and the survivor recloning. This means the divergent memories of every dead clone is lost. (Minor Season 2 Spoilers ahead) Imagine if he used the tech we're introduced to in season 2 that can upload memories to recoup the diverged memories, so he could gain knowledge and experience twice as fast?
Okay, this is a really good topic that never occurred to me. Now I am wondering what will the surviving clone do? Create an army of clones and have all memories retained via neuralink implants? Or just continue the clone cycle?
Big. Muacular, intimidating, super intellegent. Like what would happen if armageddon cloned himself, and gave himself the same level of intellect as braniac
3:15, I know these guys are literally criminally insane and this cycle has been going on for awhile but still, you do this, and now your next clone is going to remember having done this to his brother... way to create your own nightmare
While they compete and rib each other and occasionally stab each other in the back, it doesn't seem like they view themselves as two separate entities. Their competition and occasional fratricide keeps them strong. The weaker mauler dies, the stronger mauler makes a new clone off of his baseline, and the mauler twins as a singular entity become stronger for it. In this way, it makes sense that they'd be willing to clone themselves even knowing the danger that clone would pose to them
When one of the twins wiped tears from his eyes after the child Robot put down his original form, reminiscent of UMA from The Witcher... Like... They arent lacking empathy. Hell, seeing one of them enjoying the pot pie and the other teasing about whos the original before letting him go... It's pretty clear that they do what they must to survive. They're still people Also there's no way in hell that the original is alive at this rate lmao
