It's another Spotlight Episode of Best of the Worst! This time, the gang watches Lycan Colony! A movie about a town full of """""werewolves.""""" AWESOME.
I'm a filmmaker that grew up in New Hampshire. I was at the premiere of this film at Chunky's in Pelham, NH. Rob Roy was featured in a magazine (I think) at the time talking about how he was bringing a film industry to NH by making this movie there. My Dad bought tickets for my friend and I, who were in a video class in high school, to see what other filmmakers were doing in the state. Rob Roy was there, as was the cast, and there was a giant premiere party. He talked this film up soooooo much. He talked, and talked, and talked. And then we watched it.... I remember him getting up on stage afterwards and asking the audience: "How many of you loved the Doctor Dan character???" He was completely and 100% sincere. He had no shred of awareness regarding how bad it was and how bad the audience thought it was. I think it was the first and only time I've ever left a theater ashamed that I was in the audience.
Kyle Joseph Petty I’ve only gone to a few NH based premieres for NH based productions, but the only time when I didn’t walk away cringing was when I walked away a combination of bored and surprised I learned something about a topic I’ve never thought about bc Ken Burns put something in the festival. A few friends of mine also attempted to make a feature length horror film. It was tough for me to help out as I was working full time, but it ended unfinished and with one of my friends having to forcibly evict several homeless from his property after he “hired” them as actors/crew and they refused to remove their tents from his back yard when filming was done/cancelled. Don’t hire Craigslist actors I guess was the lesson.
RiffTrak brought me to this site. I played the witch in this “movie”. Trust me when I say the cast had NO idea what was being filmed! It was a nightmare! We would question Rob Roy about something and his answer would always be “I can fix it in post”. What the f*** did we know, right!? It started as doing a small favor (friend of a friend) but Roy just kept wanting to film. Cast started realizing this guy had no clue, and started refusing to show. To date, we all still have huge laughs about the experience, going as far as having a Halloween party where everyone came as their favorite Lycan Colony character!
I would love to know why a bluescreen was used for even very basic shots, like the one where the girl with the camo pants is wrestling a werewolf on the "ground" in the "woods"? Why didn't they just go into the woods?? lol
My favorite thing about this movie is that the guy set it in the fictional town of “Canisborough” New Hampshire, because the real town of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire would have been way too on the nose?
Fun Fact: Lycan Colony is one of those hidden gem "films" that has a single writer, director, composer, cast director, etc - Rob Roy. Apparently he's won awards for Best Video from magazines, cast his own friends and family in this one, used his own band "The Roy Boy Band" for music, and claims to be bringing innovation to the werewolf genre. There's an old interview with him where he dismisses other horror films and says: "Horror is huge right now, but it's all old hat," he said. "Studios throw massive amounts of money at all these filmmakers and what do they get? Every five seconds something pops into the frame with a loud noise to jolt people. It's all shock, no suspense. I hope people feel something more when they're watching my movie than cheap scares." You can't help but admire his ideals, but laugh at his incompetence.
I actually know the woman who played Russ. She hoped this movie had fallen off the face of the earth, it was so awful. She was just there because a friend asked if she wanted to be an extra. I can't wait share this with her!
Films made with a distinct lack of talent but earnest intentions are the hallmark of the 'so bad it's good' genre. I feel sympathy for the cast & crew in some of these reviews but I hope they can laugh about it, or at least appreciate that a films infamy is still something that can bring an audience joy, even if it's a completely different audience than they expected. Go easy on her
I just realized Rich Evans kinda has reverse-spotlight fear, where when he’s talking casually he’ll fuck up words but when he’s put on the spot, going on a great tangent or improvising, he’s flawless.
I've definitely noticed this. there is an undeniable difference from him on wheel of the worst and when he talks about star trek. on wheel of the worst he can't even pronounce table, while on re:view he can give a 2 minute on the spot speech about the utopia and pathos of star trek and not even flinch.
I don't know if that's uncommon for people with speech dysfluencies. Like, you might stutter while talking but can sing or rap or recite poetry without a problem. The parts of the brain involved in speech are complex. Some wires can get crossed that affect some things but not others.

Horrifying/glorious news, Rob Roy made another movie this year! It's called Damaged Disciples, and it's about discovering a small time is full of angels and demons, and he not only wrote and directed, he was editor, cinematographer, visual effects editor, casting director, special effects director, animator, props director, costume designer, and make up artist. He has almost literally every single crew and production credit, and I desperately want to see it.
Honestly, this all looks too bad to compare to any FMV focused game I can remember from the era. There were some pretty damn bad ones, but half of them shot on one location, or superimposed the actors onto pre-rendered 3D environments (which aged like a hotdog on a sidewalk, but at least generally looked consistent). Rarely was it ever so bad as superimposing actors onto a single still image, that they didn't line up with. Like there was usually SOMEONE who funded them, so they had at least a bit to work with, even if the end result was garbage. Feel free to show me something that proves me wrong though, failure is interesting.
I’ve been pondering this riddle for years, and I think I have it figured out. The line was “BIG Mistake!” and the actor took the word ‘BIG’ as a note on the delivery, leading to “…MISTAKE!!!”
I think it was the television show Hercules where the actor was supposed to recognize he wasn't in the correct time period. The line on the script had the spoken line, and followed it with capital letters saying "DISAPPOINTED". This was supposed to indicate to the actor that he was supposed to say the line in a disappointed tone. Instead, he read the line, following it by inexplicably screaming "DISAPPOINTED!" And I guess no one realized the error, as it made the final cut.

I remember sitting hunched over the desk in my college dorm room watching the Plinkett prequel reviews a decade ago. I've spent my entire adult life with these fine Midwestern gentlemen, and it warms my heart.
I think the real star of this episode was the cricket, with its amazingly timed comedic genius. It was chirping on point every time the guys jokes started to fall flat at the end
I have a parrot who does a similar thing. He can sort of tell by speech pattern when someone is saying something funny, and he will laugh before others do/end of the funny story.

You could make a legit great film about an in the closet furry who has to make a movie when his wife finds his outfit. Something like Bow finger, Argo or the Disaster Artist
The bad aspect ratio reminds me of when I was in a high school film class. Kids would shoot in 4:3 and then stretch it because they thought that made it look like a real movie. Much to the chagrin of the teacher.
I see it all the time with student filmmmakers even in college, or beyond that. Honestly if they want it to have a "theatrical" aspect ratio, just stick with 1.85:1 aspect ratio which is close to 16:9. At least your not cutting off a lot of visual information but can be fine for theater showings. Really the only time the 2.35:1 aspect ratio is fine is if you use anamorphic lenses.

Thinking you're "cured" can lead to thinking you can start using again but that you'll manage it better this time. But, the reality is, once you've developed enough of an addiction to something that it's a problem, even a brief return to it can throw you immediately back in to the worst phases of your addiction. So, you never say you're cured, but always a "recovering addict".
I would like it stated for the record, that I am convinced Rich Evans is so good at coming up with 'cover stories'. Because he is Mike's friend and who knows how many times Rich has had to explain to the cops that Mike is not sexual deviant. Its that he is just making a 'movie'.
I literally had the same thought, "Oh yeah, this is 'wolf-ly' a movie" five seconds before Mike said it. I'm so happy my shitty sense of humor is reflected in Mike Stoklasa, my spirit animal.
That's slightly out of context, like the old movie reviews where "This movie was terrible, it was very boring and nothing about it was any good." turns into "This movie was ... very ... good."

I'm fairly certain that when the wolves stick their tongues in each other's ears, Rob Roy is ripping off the blood memory from Underworld, which did it about a million times better.
