While I am a watch newbie, and a fan of Panerai, to say that those watches suggested as ALTERNATIVES is about the same as saying Danny Devito would have made a great Rocky. Also, if we are focused on PRICE, then why where there none listed??? A TRUE Panerai "alternative" list would be most welcome, as I've been searching for one that is closer to my budget!
And what would be your budget?. If you have 10k to spend in a watch, then by all means get the original. But if your budget is between $300-800 USD (and for the most people, that is already a lot of money to invest in a watch) the watches we selected are amongst the best options. If you know of a better one, I am more than glad to expand my knowledge. If you are looking for something in the 2k-5k range, many blogs out there present such options as "affordable" alternatives, you will find plenty of such selections.
