Being new to growing peppers, I am astonished at the varieties/species of peppers… On this channel I’ve seen so many different colors, color patterns, sizes, shapes and hotness… as Krystal tosses a little hot one down the hatch… “ Fire”… Thanks Pepper Geek… My peppers are winterized and pest-less 🤞 in the garage window. 🐸

My new-for-2021 favorites: Hinkelhatz (tangy, hotter than a Cayenne, very prolific); Ho Chi Minh (bright yellow cayenne-shaped but fruitier); Kalugeritsa (N. Macedonia seasoning pepper); Pippin's Golden Honey (a jalapeno-sized sweet pepper that turns bright purple and then orange); and finally Sugar Rush Peach (which I especially like to slice onto a salad).

I'm overwintering a few pepper plants because I have only 90 days frost free 😭 hopefully they survive the last a couple months of what seems to be never-ending winter! The mature plants will hopefully start producing lots of fruit really early once they get outside. I've read that's peppers can live for at least a few years so it may be worth it for some with a shorter growing season. Plus it's fun having a garden space inside 😊 🌱💕

You guys are great. I have a cute little ornamental that I overwinter indoors (in Chicago)because it flowers and creates fruit almost 12 months of the year. But this year I got into the heat. Grew Ghost, Trinidad Scorpions, and Reaper. It was very hot and sunny all summer and the yield was crazy high. I've shared them with daring souls, made some great sauce, pickled some, and still have lots in the freezer. The Reaper production was insane. Btw, one day I went outside and saw a Reaper pod with tooth marks on it. Some squirrel must have gotten a real surprise from biting into that thing! Keep up the good work.

My problem isn't finding new varieties to grow, it's trying to narrow them down so I'm not growing a hundred varieties :) Serranos will always have a place in my garden. I finally grew some NuMex Big Jim peppers this year and I think they will be a standard for me too. Very easy to grow, vigorous plants, no troubles with disease or pests, and the fruit has a lovely sweet flavor with just a nice warm heat. And the yield per plant is really remarkable.

@@PepperGeek you'll like it if you're going for low to mild heat. Apparently Big Jim is one of the most popular varieties among commercial growers, and I can see why. Tinkerbell/bishops crown, Looks like a bell or a crown, 13,000 shu, grows arounnd 6ft tall looks like a tree, might require support, baccatum 3. This is one you can do using your cgn 21500 x kslsb cross. Use the plant from that and then polinate it with a chocolate habanero and I think it will look really cool. 4. I'm growing red Reapers for the first time this year, and find it to be the slowest growing, lowest-percentage of germination rate, compared with my other peppers. I've experienced the hotter the variety, the harder they are to grow, except with Scorpions. Maybe I just need practice. I moved nearly 3000 miles from where I'm from, perhaps I need to better adjust growing style with different climate. I have family near Melbourne AU, how do you like living there!? It seems it would be great pepper growing climate, no? I'm now in Kentucky, U.S., moved from Oregon, U.S., never been to good ol' Australia, but would love to visit! Good luck on your purple Reapers, let me know how they do/did! (Oh yeah, our summers are your winters, which explains why you were trying to germinate 7 months ago!)

They will likely try to grow leaves/branches. Just keep it trimmed up every 1-2 weeks until a few weeks before its ready to go back outside in Spring

I'd recommend sugar Rush cream. It's a journey to find the perfect ripeness but when that's figured out they are delicious. They look kind of dirty creamy yellow when ripe. The Hippie seed company. Where did you get your purple reaper seeds? I really want to grow that.

Thanks for the recommendation - we had some of those in 2020 that a a friend grew. Great flavor and crunch, and we did save some seeds so maybe we'll grow in 2022. I believe we got the purple reaper seeds from chilli-seedz.com

I grew Aji Charapita for the first time this year. I ate one, and then gave my wife one without saying anything. “Oh, that’s good!…Oh, that’s hot…Oh…OH NO!…OH!!!” -My Wife

I live in an area with a long growing season but where summer temps rarely rise above 22 or 24. Should I be using low tunnels to boost the temperature and humidity? Vancouver Island here where it's a cooler Mediterranean climate...rainy moderate winters with cool dry summers.

It can help to use some sort of fabric to keep temps more consistent. Ideal temps are probably around that 23-24 mark for peppers, so shoot for that!

I'm not really fond of peppers (I don't like that typical bitterish flavor or heat at all). It's taken me several seasons to find my keepers: Cubanelle to replace bananas, Big Bertha and my favorite; Chocolate Beauty. The chocolates don't even taste like a pepper; just really sweet with hints of chocolate, cherry and prickly pear. Based on these varieties, do you have any recommendations on a big, sweet pepper?

We got them too - excited to try the yellow variant. Yellow chinense peppers always seem to taste the best.

I hybridized a new variety that I know you will love, would you be interested in trying it out and and making a review for them? The seeds you will be given will be F3 its a cayenne /ornamental cross. They aren't for sale yet , and probably only fully releasing them at F6 - F8

We did actually grow a plant this year but it did not produce well at all - super spicy though! The purple reaper seemed spicier to me still

Ever heard of the "labuyo"? It's similar to the bird's eye but native of the Philippines. It's really cute but extremely spicy. 💕

Could you add how many days it takes to ripen each pepper you mentioned. I live in zone 4a and have only 100 to 110 days of growing. Thx

Out of our favorites, I'd recommend the KS White Thai, Aji Charapita, and/or the 7 Pot Primo Orange. These were all earlier to produce than the baccatums and the purple reaper. But, if you start early enough and have a space indoors and lighting setup you could grow any of them. Also, constraining to a smaller pot will encourage earlier fruiting

My Aji Charapita produced amazingly as well, but I didn't have that purple coloring happen. They went from green to yellow. Any idea why that would be? Seed was originally from bakers creek seed company.

It is definitely a reaction to the sun exposure - our location for the plant was full sun (literally sunrise to sunset), so the pods had a lot of daily sun exposure
