/ badgergoodger GTA IV's first trailer was amazing, but it had a lot of interesting details that we never got to see in the final game. Thank you to everyone who helped me find what changed! Follow me on Twitter: / badgergoodger
One thing you gotta love about Rockstar games: The trailers often come out so long before the actual game's release that the final product ends up looking significantly better than the one originally advertised (quite the opposite from other video game publishers out there)
@@YOEL_44 I know that some effects look better in the trailer, but I'll never forget the first time you see the city in the trailer and it looks significantly better in the actual release
@@mazda9624 It's not about the effects, there are a bunch of elements that were totally deleted, aniations simplified and general lower density in the final game, the trailers always look alive, and the game looks like a low cost homemeade copy of them
@@YOEL_44 I suppose that's fair. I haven't actually seen the original 2011 trailer in years, so I was just going off of my first impressions when starting the game for the first time in 2013 (I remember the city being far more hazy in the trailer than the actual game)
I still think Postal 2 (Which is 16 years old) is more alive. Like sure as Badger said you can find new Dialogue. But in Postal 2, you can never be unsurprised from that game
they took the dodo sea plane out the original game then added to current gen when it launched and originally the dodo had tires on it i remember it from a post of people who found a plane in gta v files but dint know what it was.
Me too! Mt Chiliad and the forest area were way different in the first trailer of GTA V! There are also a lot of cut vehicles that Rockstar added only on the remastered version or on gta online (Hydra, sea plane etc...)
I always found this game interesting just because I visited NYC back in late 2006, so it kinda had the same vibe coming out in 2008. It's honestly like a relic with the old phone models and all that.
My favourite GTA. I love the atmosphere. Also the alleyways in GTA IV looks really ghetto with all the graffiti, dumpster and trash all over the place this is another thing I like about it! It reminds me of Manhunt.
@@yennefer1055 look at the shaders and the mods. People do insane stuff with render hook. If they port it to RAGE, the gameplay will be completely different. High resolution models and textures are also possible.
@@neoqueto you cant port from gta 3 era engine into RAGE bro. Two fundamenrally different engines. Models , textures and such are mostly compiled specifically to replace ones in RAGE for most models :((
Never even realized it until now but the billboard in the beta that has the Dead Weapons ad on it is the same exact John Wu looking dude with an X that they use in the picture in GTAV's 'loud' option for the jewelry store heist.
Wow I've been planning on making this video for a long time haha, left it too long it seems. I think you did a better job than I could have done though, amazing content.
@Nigward The Grove St. Gangsta UTTP THDTC not only gta, I see him everywhere. Even the music I listen to! But what's the problem. We're the ones liking.
GTA IV is by far the most sophisticated and mature GTA ever created, the city feels alive and its world feels realistic shame V took another route,in fact i didn't manage to play the V to its end. Just my personal opinion.
7:55 I always liked his beta hairstyle more since the modeled was inspired by Sasha from "Behind Enemy Lines " (a war movie from 2001) and the actor had messy hair too
I believe there is another difference in Niko’s famous monologue, when he says, *_“Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different.”_* The first part of the line is well known and it’s used in the main game during the mission Rigged to Blow when he is talking to Ilyena Faustin. However, the line *_“Perhaps here, things will be different,”_* which actually is the title of the very trailer, I believe it is not used anywhere else in the game. At least it’s clear it’s not used alongside together with that line. However, a slightly modified version of that line may appear when Niko is dating with Michelle, where he may say, “Maybe here, things will be different,” albeit in very different tone and style. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-es8nYz-iqPs.html
5:33 I swear that billboard with the X behind the man with guns is the picture for the gta 5 story mode jewellery store heist for the Loud approach I may be wrong
Man, I honestly wish there could've been a lot more added to GTA 4. Maybe most of those things were removed because of the Xbox 360's and PS3's hardware limitations, but that's just my guess.
You guys really did some fantastic investigation work on being able to compare those differences from the trailer to what we got in the finish game itself😮👏 There's a lot of things that I never really thought about having been absent either, such as some of the smaller details around the city, or even the lack of seagulls flying around which would've been pretty cool and definitely would've added an extra element of life to help make things feel more alive too! Will look forward to your next GTA IV related video and your videos in general as always too!👍
Man, that intro made me remember waiting for that teaser. So much hype it ruined the games I was playing at the time. Ended up taking a break because I was terminally hyped for IV.
Its a shame how much Rockstar had to cut out because they undertook a project that was just too big, even for them. Im fairly sure that if they had another... 6 months? Of development time, all of those cut features would have atleast partially made it into the game. Almost as if when they delayed the game they had a meeting, and decided how much stuff had to be cut and covered so it looked like it never existed. Or tell me, how else do you explain that, in a game that went through such extreme lengths to make a realistic, extremely detailed environment, the license plates are just placeholders? Easy, they never had time to make the plate generation logic, and the same applies to a bunch of other little things.
Something like that meeting you mentioned probably did happen. They knew the game had to be delayed, and that they can't delay it a second time without looking bad or causing people to lose interest in the game. So it came down to "Cutting stuff is unfortunate, but what can we cut to save time, resources, and memory within the console?" License plates are surely a result of this. They were blank in a lot of old screenshots and videos, now everyone has "LIBERTY CITY" vanity plates I guess. Also, I think the cops in Alderney mostly being the LCPD and using LCPD vehicles is another example. They probably couldn't get a separate jurisdiction for Alderney to work correctly (not in time for when the game had to be finished at least). Cops in Alderney State Police uniforms spawn and announce themselves as state police, but when they drive around in LCPD cruisers, it just looks weird.
Regarding your ferry question, they were probably planning on having a version of Staten Island in the game that would've been then instead of Alderney which is where New Jersey would be. West of Algonquin.
Staten Island was never part of the original map, even in the first drafts (see other video from the publisher). Ferry was certainly for Liberty Island.
@@Amikeur actually there is also a Ferry in real life that goes Manhattan to Jersey which I often forget about because I've never taken it. Thanks for the heads up
IMO that’s why GTA V earned a billion dollars in three days and sold more copies than entire sales of GTA IV in last months of 2013. Actually,GTA IV was a nothing compare with GTA V.
The walking animation from the final game was brought over from bully Jimmy has the same walking animation either that or the scholarship edition used the same walking animation from gta 4 also another thing from bully is kimmy jacket model in the introduction is very similar to the one niko can buy in the russian shop
Badger Goodger Yeah but Toni and Victor have a different walking animation (except running) CJ moves his hand when walking, Toni walks normally and Victor walking animation it’s kind of laggy.
Nice video man. Very interesting topic. If you want to do an interview about gta please look at my video "the problem with gta online" and let me know if you would be interested in doing one
I recently found your channel and you make such good quality videos. Only 35k? You’re underrated af. Keep doing what your doing, your channel will blow up soon, trust me.
Awesome vid as always! It's very likely some of the 3D era stuff was indeed ported into GTA IV early on, there's a lot of GTA SA leftovers which means they probably tested a lot of SA content before actually beginning to make the IV-specific stuff. Wouldn't be surprised if that was CJ's walking animation indeed at the end. :) Also, one of the official early screens shows a GTA SA timecyc basically!
That screenshot showing the street down Roman's cab depot, right? I remember that, it was one of the first screenshots of the game released with the April 2007 Game Informer (which I still have a copy of), and that build of the game was definitely using the SA tinecycle. I think there's a streetlight that was even from SA in one of those shots, too. Also, if the Euphoria physics are disabled, don't the animations for falling and dying become the 3D era ones? I remember seeing a video where someone disabled Euphoria and Niko fell with CJ's falling animation and then he dropped dead with Tommy Vercetti's death animation from VC. If he didn't mod those animations in himself, then they were definitely using 3D era animations in earlier builds as placeholders.
@@BadgerGoodger that's the one! Some SA stuff in early IV builds for sure. And yes I think the animations revert to something very similar to GTA SA's if you disable euphoria but haven't seen that in years
9:20 i think that they maybe reused this plank animation in rdr2, because you can see npcs walking with plank in various small towns and cities. but idk really
Great detailed video! Indeed, one of R* Gems of last gen. Some things I didnt know, and its interesting too!! Keep it up Badger! I really wonder why they decided to just change the texture on the roof of the bank with that Glass dome instead of having it transparent. It was also a highlight of that trailer how the effects of the lights went through the glass.
The Ferry terminal in Manhattan is connected with Staten Island, Governors Island or that statue of liberty island in real life. Maybe they planed to create a Staten Island in the game or some other islands the ferries would swim too. Also New York has built a lot of new ferry terminals and it has become a viable option to commute along Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and even NJ
People saying that the seagulls flying around being cut are wrong.. I've seen them plenty of times. Especially near the ferry terminal. If you just hang around the terminal for a bit you'll be able to see them
Kingrhem you can see them. Just hang out at the ferry terminal for a little bit... you can also rarely see them near the platypus boat, and other areas similar to that. Idk if they spawn at a particular weather or what not, but ya know... just check during a sunny weather, early in the morning or what not
GTA 4 is a great game, probably the most fleshed out GTA ever in terms of how alive the world is. GTA 5 is great too, and I prefer it do the the variety of terrain, but it seems more static than 4, especially in the city.
So my speculation regarding the Ferry system ties into the idea of the developers wanting to have a bigger map replicating much of New York State. In real life, the Staten Island Ferry is the ferry system used to go from Staten Island to Manhattan, and vice versa. Staten Island is the only borough of NYC not included in the game. It's possible that they meant to include it in the game but scraped it along with everything that wasn't Liberty City and Alderney but could have liked the idea of having a ferry system leading to them opting to keep it in the game (Perhaps to link Algonquin to, say, Alderney or something) before cutting it around the time of the trailer. Also, in 2007-2008, the new and current ferry terminal in Manhattan was still under construction, which I believe it appears as such in the game as well.
Rockstars masterpiece. The setting, narrative, music selection, character design, writing and mechanics worked so well together and perfectly encapsulated New York City during the recession. Dan Houser, Lazlow and Benzies all in their prime. The dream team. Man I wish systems were more advanced then and they were able to include the rest of liberty state as planned. Don’t get me wrong I love how the whole narrative was locked into the city portions of LC and Alderney but I can’t help but think how incredible it would have been to be out in the countryside and to see those towering monoliths in Algonquin looming in the distance
Honestly it's fun looking back on what changed and if it was for the better or not. Plus yeah 13 years. I remember the hype so well. Heres hoping someone sees if a lot of the small changes like a see through glass dome can be restored. Also I never noticed the female cops. Shame they cut those for sure.
