The stupid thing is they could've simply kept the Oculus account, but force you to tie it to a Facebook account. Keep the actual oculus account separate, where your purchases and what not aren't bound to a Facebook account, but still make you link Facebook so they can do that sweet sweet data collection.

Still better to use a free facebook account then to pay 60$ to Sony or Microsoft so you are allowed to play online. This is (similar to a console) a budget device. Sure they use some tricks to make money. You can also built a high end gaming pc and buy a valve index if you want to

@@PSYCHOV3N0M no but they don’t let you play the games you already bought on the console you already paid for via the Internet connection you were already charged for online if you don’t pay them 60$. They brick your ability to play online if you don’t pay. I much rather make a free legit facebook account (so it won’t get banned) that is all set on private then paying 60$! every single year. If you delete your Sony or Microsoft account all your digital games are gone as well. Just don’t delete those accounts lol

God these Oculus devices are really nice, but Facebook is a no for me :/ Edit: I knew that this account situation was going to generate a lot of discussion. Look, I think that everyone agrees that the hardware Facebook makes is impressive. But without adequate data and privacy protection laws in many places, you’ll just have to trust that Facebook doesn’t use the data for purposes you don’t like. This data can include more personal information like your height, a 3D model of your room, and in the future things like where you look on the screen. Just be mindful and ask yourself if you support Facebook’s direction of VR. And to the people saying "but you also have an account with Google or some other service", that doesn't make this any better. Those companies also have their issues that need to be worked out.

@@marcokester8082 the issue is that you have to link a facebook account that must follow facebooks rules. that means if your facebook account gets banned (for not using real name for example) you will lose all your purchases and oculus account

But yeah if it turns out real (which I hope it will), it would be my first pcvr headset, definitely buying it.

it hasn't got 2 LCD displays, it has one, this is to keep the cost down. This is also why it only have the 3 iPD positions, because they are adjusting what sections of the display are used. The largest IPD actually cuts off part of outer edge of the rendered image because of this.

@@officialneer Ya I googled the original quest IPD and it turns out I only had it around 64mm. I think the quest 2's 3 settings scale was more problematic than the actual supported IPD's If I had to guess I think I was somewhere between a 2 and a 3, so hopefully the G2 having an actual slider as well as software IPD should help since my Rift S and original quest were fine

I was actually looking forward to this device, until Facebook pulled the switcheroo. I don’t have a FB account and there’s no way I’d get one, particularly with the issues of accounts being potentially deleted if you’re not sharing enough personal info (so they could call you a ‘bot’) and even losing purchased games. I suppose I’ll have to hang on for a while longer for VR

@@exglued2394 Playing games has always required a computer or device (like a console), the Quest has "mobile/phone" versions. If you're looking into Virtual Reality, and you're not doing it correctly, ie trying to do it as cheaply as possible without a computer, you're already in the wrong mindset.

@@ADRENELINEDUDE what are you on about? I had both a Lenovo Explorer MR headset and an Oculus Quest, and there is no difference in gameplay/graphics between both headsets. Maybe the Quest has slightly lower quality textures, but I wouldn’t call it a “cheap mobile bad alternative”

@@pismodude2 Same, this is basically what happened when Blizzard tried to require people to use their real names on the forums, with basically the same backlash. People don't want to be forced to link their real world info to their form of escapism, especially if it opens them up for data being abused or someone to track them down and SWAT them or something. (That was a concern brought up by a lot of Starcraft 2 players, based on it actually happening in South Korea.)

@@notmedude I have already spent huge amount of $ on games (on my quest 1) and would have bought more with the quest 2. Connecting them to a "throwaway" FB account is too dangerous. You'll loose them. All money down the drain. That's why I cancelled my pre-ordered quest 2. Not acceptable. Maybe if I were single and never had friends using my VR.

@@airbornesnail It happened to one person who happened to post his story on Reddit : www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/japo1j/facebook_account_banned_within_10_minutes/ And he updated the post saying that even tho his account got banned for no reason (false positive of their AI system) he contacted their support and they removed the ban and now he got back all of his games.

@@CssHDmonster the DRM is no different than a console. Actually it's a lot better than a Playstation for example, as developer mode is accessible on every unit, which allows you to use any Quest 2 as a devkit, mod your games, etc. Jailbreak isn't out publicly yet, but will be next year.

Honestly you should save and get a Valve index. I've owned both and the index is better; but my main reasoning for using it is that I refuse to give Facebook my personal data. My oculus was purchased before the Facebook acquisition and I am incredibly insulted and violated that a product I bought is now worthless to me.

I have the money for a valve index, but since I am a senior and still live at home, my parents are already tired of all the money I spend on computer hardware for vr, so the only reason I can upgrade to the quest is because I was able to sell my cv1 for 290.

@@gjeraldh2989 That is absolute BS and horrible advice. Facebook has an absolutely ridiculous bot algorithm that can easily catch fake accounts in an extremely short time. Some fake accounts may survive longer than others but the chances of never getting caught is almost zero. You *WILL* get caught. When you're caught using a fake account, the account will get locked until you can prove it's real. Unless you can verify the account is real using a real form of ID, your account will get banned and deleted, and you'll lose all your purchases and access to your headset with it. They'll literally brick your headset and take away your purchases without refunding you if you try to use a fake account. To anyone who plans on buying a Quest 2, don't take any chances. If you're gonna buy Facebook hardware then use a real Facebook account or you will get caught and your money will go down the drain. Otherwise, don't buy into the Facebook ecosystem at all. If you don't want to use Facebook at all then just don't buy a Quest 2.

Virtual reality device which has been proven to be a massive privacy concern and is only going to get worse when eye-tracking is on most headsets. No way to actually contact Facebook for support, they don't give a shit. The fact that people had to make Reddit posts when they got locked out of their Quest is insane. Google: You can use RU-vid without an account. You can sign up for an account with "White Fox" as your name, I'm pretty sure that's not your real name although if it is that's pretty sick. You won't get banned for a fake name on RU-vid. Isn't linked to a virtual reality device (although phones are just as bad.) RU-vid is free to use and clearly ad supported. Facebook are charging you somewhat close to the price of a Reverb G2 which is a far better product if you have a decent PC. They're then using the product you purchased to harvest your data and not bothering to provide any support if you get banned for not giving them all of your personal information. Fuck Facebook and fuck all of the products associated with it, they're going to completely ruin the VR space with their bull shit if HP/Valve don't come up with a standalone budget headset.

I've had my Rift for over 3 years now and if it holds up for another 2, I'll be happy. It's held up rather well considering how many times I've ran over the cable, dropped it and smacked the walls with my controllers. I've more than got my money's worth out of it already. This ticks all the marks of a entry level VR headset i've been waiting for since the early days of youtubers buying dev kits. Problem is the facebook requirement, makes it a deal breaker. The only way i'd buy one of these is if they removed the facebook required crap or if there was instructions on how to bypass the facebook nonsense either installing something like linux, or doing something to remove it.

Good news then, Facebook is claiming they will remove the Facebook requirement sometime this year, so by the Quest 3 you should be able to get a nice entry-level vr headset without having a Facebook account. That's what I plan on doing myself, but only once it's been implemented

ok so basically reasons to not buy: - facebook - tracking suuuucks (many blind spots, personal experience) - facebook again - not upgradable at all (storage, gpu, etc) - quest 1 is probably cheap now if you’re fine with last gen - quest competitors are probably coming soon with more features and less facebook reasons to buy: - wireless - if there’s a jailbreak you won’t have to deal with facebook - you don’t have a pc - good for kids - decent resolution and refresh rate - can also be a pcvr headset

Also if you make a dummy account they'll ban it until you submit a valid photo ID such as a driver's license to prove your identity. Until you do so, you cannot use any of your purchases, and must re-set-up the Quest on a new account to even make it functional again. Google doesn't do that. Apple doesn't do that. Microsoft doesn't do that. Only FaceBook will brick you and demand your driver's license. And for what? This isn't a utility, or even smartphone. It's a game console. Imagine being bricked out of your game system and needing to give up a license to play Beat Saber. Overstep much?

Yhea i own the quest 1 its amazing. its the holy grail of vr in my opinion. i play pavlov beatsaber on expert and it runs fine. i do wish that the tracking of the controllers was higher than 30 hertz shouldve been more like 70-80 for heavy users. but i generally only detect it in beatsaber and pavlov and never bothers me really

My comment is obvious speculation. However, it was confirmed by Jay that that was how it worked with his sponsorship on his video. He explained it in a pinned comment, which now doesn't exist. If you want proof, load a bunch of comments, then ctrl+F "fuzzypictures" Jay has a reply mentioning the missing pinned comment. I'd link it, but youtube doesn't support that action.

I’m loving my quest 1 and I’m giving it to my young brother to enjoy it too Now with the quest 2 ? It’s hard to consider a good hybrid headset. I spent about 200$ of accessories for the quest1 and I don’t want to spend even more with the second one. I got the head strap with the battery as a final hope to never spend much on accessories and this quest 2 has been a daily driver for me. I didn’t treat it gentle. Just treated it like I’d treat my phone. Media consumption and constant gaming and I keep it in the bag by the end of the day after cleaning the lenses. Overall I’m feeling a bit comfortable with my purchase but I should not put too much hope for anything beside what I just bought. The future of VR is unpredictable and it’s better to save up for something worthwhile.

im glad someone is finally thinking about us vr enthusiasts, id love to see more stuff based around vr like all the cool tech and games and hardware benchmarked for vr so more ppl knew what they need to play good vr not just standalone stuff but the amazing tracking and feel of good vr like the index, etc... because even though the standalone vr units are a good idea and get more ppl into it, i prefer lighthouses and an amazing headset and controllers. the quest controllers are just way to small for my hands i cant use them and have them feel comfortable.. the original rift touch controllers were ok size and had amazing durability i mean you could smash them through the wall and they didnt even scratch ahahaha

Yes! Facebook buying even more reviews. No thanks. Compelling or not, forcing to submit your personal data in such amounts is absolutely intolerable. And as a person who has not used facebook in 8 years this is unacceptable. Also refreshrates below 120 suck in VR.
