Trade Runner is back in the water and better than ever! After a week on the hard stand repairing the collision damage we get going north again and we are ripping. My new crew member John is pretty excited and I'm loving the strong downwind sailing too.
Next stop Cairns
Thanks for watching.

Yep, sets a ripper. Goes surprisingly well upwind too.

We sailed up through the Barrier Reef in a 50ft monohull in the 70s as part of a 5yr circumnavigation. It was some of the hardest sailing we did. It seemed always dead downwind, everytime we went around a headland the wind followed. The only navigation aid we had was a depth sounder and sextant. Going through narrow reef passages was pretty stressful. To have had the speed of a cat would have been a good help.

This was the first time I really enjoyed sailing downwind. Without a hull speed we could just fly the big sail and go faster and faster. 30kts true is only 15kts apparent when we are doing 15kt.

Vernon, this was a real ripper. I enjoyed the Doppler radar on screen explanation of watching the approaching weather system and the reason for the sail change. Once again, learning by doing. Thanks for the lesson. Love to Marie. ❤

Glad it was helpful! The radar is a new tool for me and it will come in handy for night passages

Good to see Vernon, you're enjoying the fruits of your hard labor from re-rigging to visiting the slips for repairs and antifouling,. The radar screen you pointed to looks very helpful,. Tool what brand and model is it.? Wishing wonderful navigational experience. SV Skoiern IV

Random question, Why do you talk about distances in miles and not KMs?

Mostly because I'm using knots for boat and wind speed so it makes sense to use nautical miles. Sailing at 10 knots means I cover 10 nautical miles per hour.
