There are no laws against serving escolar or walu, but there are rules about making sure restaurants and other businesses label the fish properly so customers know what they're getting.
with the amount of oil that leakaged out of my ass i was able to deep fry a turkey that i found on thanksgiving. i was able to have two great meals while saving saving a hard earned buck on cooking oil.
The Sushi restaurant I frequent labels it as Escolar on the menu, It's succulent and buttery. Other places call it White Tuna. When eaten in moderation, it will not hurt you, other than maybe an extra trip to the can.
I've had escolar three times. The first two were absolutely delicious! It is easily one of the tastiest fish out there. Unfortunately, the third time was a disaster. The resultant diarrhea was a constant, never stray far from the toilet, two day event!
I know what you’re thinking. Did I have two pieces of white tuna, or was it three? In all the excitement, I lost count. But seeing as white tuna contains gempylotoxin, the most powerful laxative in the world and can stain your pants clean through I’d be asking myself, “Do I feel lucky?” Well, do you?
I had "white tuna" for lunch the other day. The morning after, I woke up to realize my ass had leaked orange stuff in my sleep. Not kidding. It was all over my undies and I'm lucky it didn't get on the bed. In order to keep my underwear clean through the day, I had to put a toilet paper barrier in my butt crack. I didn't get sick or get diarrhea, exactly... it was just this leakage. That fish is delicious, I mean amazing, but be aware of the consequences.
Exactly what happen to me right now... in the office 🤦♀️, no one is around so I took 1 big fart, then walking and feel something oily back there. Luckily I'm wearing dark skirt today. It's my first time eating it last night and it tastes so good.
I went out to eat sushi. I ate 108 pieces of sushi in total. I barely made it home (15 minutes away) after that. I ran to the bathroom 12 times in just a few hrs. I thought I just ate to much sushi. Lol amongst the order of sushi I ordered 36 pieces of so called "White Tuna " I'm pissed. I'm gonna demand my $$ tomorrow. (I ordered 36 pieces of "White Tuna", redfish and and yellow fin)
Reed the Fish Mongerer (RU-vid) did a test of the 6 oz recommendation. He cleaned, cut, and ate 10 oz of fresh, uncooked Escolar... all uncut footage to eliminate any accusations of "Video Shenanigans." Results 24 hrs later: 3 "sitting events" on the toilet described as "the most bizarre of his life," sparing us any more details. No cramps or nausea... So, individual tolerances -- do -- vary. Plus... He described the taste and texture as some of the best in the world... So it's easy to understand the market, even with the side effects.
No offense, but I found the escolar sashimi is the chirashi bowl to be very delicious on top of with the salmon, tuna and yellowtail sashimi that is placed on top of sushi rice! ^_^
I had 2-3 slices of white tuna I didn't like the taste but I ate it but everytime I eat it I get sick.. like stomach feels weird and feels like gagging and head feels heavy and things like that. But I don't get sick like that after I asked them not to serve white tuna.
The answer is always... MONEY !! 2 dollar a pound fish passed off as 60 dollar a pound "tuna" ain't Corperations Great !?! Most fish no matter what you order has been tested by the USDA as being mislabeled 90% of the time. Its a cat and mouse game, these fish wholesalers make billions by doing it.
It has superb taste, but a day after you eat it, be careful when passing gas or doing more demanding physical activities. Not worth the nausea, cramps, diarrhea and embarassment, IMO, there should be a law world wide to have this type of fish always labeled correctly so people would be aware of the ideal amount to eat and the undesired effects it can cause.
I have escolar very often with sushi orders. It is delicious and i can confirm, it is incredibly waxy. It has given me some unpleasant bathroom visits before, but it’s worth it.
This fish taste amazing! But man when i found strange orange oil in the toilet i freaked out for a second thinking i have some horrible disease. I hope to god that its from the white tuna sashimi i had yesterday. Pretty odd that they serve a fish thats borderline ineatable, but hey. Its tasty!
Whitefish or White tuna is one of my favorite sashimi fish flavors. I had better learn moderation. Especially when visiting an all you can eat establishment. 🐟
I had it once at a japnese/asian buffet couple years ago I didnt think much of it and I was fine until I was close to my home luckily my home wasnt too far but i have to say its the worst pain that i ever felt ever wouldnt wish it on my enimies at all
I recently started eating sushi..and I always asked for "white tuna". now in my mind.. I'm thinking that I'm actually getting "whitr tuna"... guess I'll have to be careful and ask for the type of fish nedt time
I'm here doing some research because I LOVE butterfish sashimi, and always get told it's toxic. However... I eat it every time i am at a sushi restaurant and never had any digestive problems... so i dont get it. It's my favorite but if it actually is bad for my health i'll stop. can someone please tell me a little more about it.
starting from the top and the most important issue, oilfish and escolar are two types of "white tuna" that are dangerous to eat. they're dangerous because their meat contains 20% wax esters by weight. wax esters are a type of oil that humans cannot digest at all and there's been reports of vomiting, oily diarrhea, and stomach cramps from consuming it. eating these types of "white tuna" is like eating liquid candles. if you've ever had experience with Orlistat, a weight loss medication, the result is kind of like that. fat stays undigested in your intestines until you have to go to the bathroom. butterfish and rudderfish are from a different species of fish that do NOT contain any wax esters at all. they are as harmless as any other market fish like tilapia, sea bream, snapper, salmon, etc. however, due to a mistranslation from japanese to English because both butter and oil contain the character 油, the harmless butterfish is also misidentified as "white tuna" in sushi restaurants. that means you might not know which fish is being served to you, in fact the sushi restaurant might not know which fish is being served to you. that's because it's the fisheries' and market's job to identify the fish, but misconceptions mean the workers clump 4 different types of fish into one "white tuna" category
I had some once. It's tender, and fatty. It took a bit longer but it still gave me the most Lovecraftian night in my bathroom. I was in there for as long as The Deathly Hallows 2. Was it worth the agony? Damn right it is. 🤣
Most fish like these that aren’t frozen first and made fresh into sashimi have a high chance of parasites and nasty bacteria’s. I eat escolar all the time buffet and never get sick.
I had 1 piece of butterfish (super delicious) and had minor stomach cramps last night but now worried (less than 6 oz). The sushi place I went to had both butterfish and white tuna on their menu so not sure what they difference is but will be sure to ask next time
@@alexkyte4093 when you eat oilfish or escolar, you are eating indigestible wax esters, a type of oil that has no way to be processed by your body. it's like eating liquid candles. this oil has only one way out of your body, and it doesn't look good when it comes out. the description of it reminds me of Orlistat, a weight loss medication that makes your intestines not digest fats, so you get oily poop as a tradeoff. the Scatophagus species, butterfish, is fine to eat because it like most common market fish doesn't have any wax esters
butterfish is not dangerous, but some sushi places might serve you escolar or oilfish instead of butterfish because fisheries are prone to miscategorizing their catches, especially when it comes to escolar, oilfish, rudderfish, and butterfish. so it's best to err on the side of caution when ordering the last two are completely safe to eat if the fish are actually what's being served on your plate
I buy Escolar steaks all the time. I don't eat them raw! This is a very buttery fish, that is great when seasoned or marinaded well. I don't understand your take on comparing this fish to tuna? I also eat sashimi all the time, quite often at buffets that have white fish that I consume in abundance. If this fish is served sashimi style I've never had a problem, maybe your not able to digest this fish as well as others, especially Asians like myself.
It's called "super white tuna" also. I ordered one piece as part of my sushi happy hour and had to run back to the restaurant bathroom before even making it to my car. The sickness is momentary, but still, why do restaurants still serve this if it causes most people to get he shits?
I love white tuna/escolar. Although, like some people in the comment, I get weird orangey oil coming out of my ass lul. The more I eat, more likely and higher amount of oil it comes out my ass. Try to eat in small portions but it's hard 😭
Wrong!!! They are totally different in physical flesh characteristics! Chilean seabass, aka Patagonian toothfish, is safe to eat with its flesh containing NO wax esters like Escolar. There is another fish with flesh characteristics similar to Escolar, and that is the Oilfish. Both are similar, deep water fish with pearly white flesh. Both are delicious, but eaten in quantities, can develop a horrible diarrhea episode that can last for 48 hours!!!
There are three known species of such fish in Japan: Escolar, Oilfish (Ruvettus pretiosus), and Skilfish. ・Escolar and Oilfish are banned from sale and serving in restaurants ・Skilfish is edible (although eating a lot of it is not recommended). I have heard that outside of Japan all of these fish may be served under the name of white tuna and are difficult to identify. Maybe that's why some people are okay with eating fish that look like Escolar and others are not.
Odd Chef, "I guess it tastes good", really chef? You serve it, but have not tasted it yourself? I guess he is one of those "I just work here" kind of people--but that doesn't get it, for a Chef, it really doesn't. Let me help, it is WAY beyond "good", it is out of this world good. Flip side, it is very very rich, full of fat, I do not know the calories, but I think it must be very high. And I'll bet it is like Salmon in that it must be served soon after you catch it, even in the fridge, I'll bet it has a short storage time before it goes bad.
