+Doug Schakel Coach do you think this would work against an aggressive trapping 1-3-1 that picks you up full-court?

+James LaMacchia Against an aggressive, trapping full court 1-3-1, I would use either (1) a 2-1-2 alignment to place personnel in the gaps of the 1-3-1 or (2) I would use the 1-4 press offense by Coach Pettitgoue (found by Googling "You Tube Press Offense"). If the defense continues to be aggressive once you are in the half court, I would use the 2-1-2 alignment and spread out by using most of the half court space (fill the 4 corner areas and put one player in the middle of the court. Then you want to play a little "keep away" and make the defense chase the ball all over the half court before you try to score. With a little bit of patience on offense, you will soon begin to see the defense losing their enthusiasm for this high energy approach to defense. The problem, offensively, for a lot of teams is that they try to attack too soon and the defense is rewarded for their extreme effort with quick shots by the offense. The defense can go hard because they don't have to do it for a long period of time. Play hard for a few seconds and get the ball back. But if the defense is made to stay in this frenzied approach a little longer each possession, the reward disappears and they, instead, are "punished" with what amounts to a "conditioning drill" as they chase the ball around. The other bonus here is that while they "condition," your team gets to, basically, stand and rest as they move the ball around. A very difficult maneuver for the 1-3-1 to defend in the half court is the "diagonal out and down." When the ball gets to one of the deep corners, look for a diagonal pass out to the opposite side guard and he quickly relays the ball to the deep corner man on his side of the floor. Very difficult for the 1-3-1 to cover. I hope this information will be helpful. --Doug Schakel
