Bi People Have Issues

Bi people have issues that we're faced with every day, as individuals and as a community. But the thing is, most people out there don't know that. Not even a lot of bi people know just how bad the situation is for members of my community. I've been making bi videos for a little over two years now. Since then, I've also gotten pretty involved with the bi community at large and had the pleasure of working with a bunch of various bi groups, and yet even I didn't know how bad the situation was until recently. So here are a few stats I found that I thought you guys should know about. Hopefully, if we can educate people about some of these bi issues, we can finally begin to address them. Happy Bi Visibility Week!

+Coke Guts you're actually blowing my mind right now... you sound just like the conservative straight community and its actually the saddest shit i have ever seen... the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer plus) community is 100% our community to too, Bisexuality is literally in the name... its just sad that you would impose the same hate you probably got whe you came out on people that share your same struggle... the stats dont lie and it shows how biphobia is such a huge problem with not only the straight community but the LGBTQ+ too and it actually is upsetting... we're not safe anywhere...

Gabby Solis this sounds sad, and I’m not 100% certain I would label myself as bisexual, as I am definitely not biromantic (I know they are separate but are often linked together), and I know that even if I do decide to adopt that label, but I feel like I am not apart of the lgbt + community. Is it partially because of issues like these? Yes, and also I don’t align with the predominant political views of the community.

@@SynthwaveJade same thing with me, I have a girlfriend and homophobic parents, but when I was watching Dans(Dan Howwel) coming out video I realized something I never thought of before; "wait, my parents don't need to know if I'm dating someone, it's my personal, private business and none of theirs, my love life has nothing to do with my family." My plan is to come out when I no longer live under their roofs, it'll be A LOT easier if I just wait out those few years with them thinking she's my best friend. Trust me, who you date shouldn't be their business unless it's dangerous or you're being exploited, and probably neither of those things are happening, so just be happy with her and love who you love :) Oh, and plus, you can have sleepovers with her and spoon unlike people who are out or straight.

i feel conflicted sometimes as a bi women, when around gay friends i define myself as lesbian because i feel more accepted and in the past ive been told off by lesbians for being bi. and i get sick of having that argument and having to justify my sexuality which i find is so weird everyone else doesn't have to justify their sexuality, and often people say why dont you choice and that just makes me really angry and make me say things like why dont you choice to be the opposite to their sexuality. so i feel bad because it pushers the erasha and creates a feed back.

What exactly is bi visibility? If you're married with the opposite sex, what's the point of coming out? To tell people you sometimes watch gay porn? Or you want a label on your passport saying "Bisexual" to let the world know even if you're in a heterosexual relationship, you're still bi? I don't get it.
@SimonaOmina
@SimonaOmina 7 лет назад
I would dare to say there's even more bi people than straight people, literally everyone I've met and got close to eventually came out as bisexual. I think there might be the same or bigger amount of bisexuals than heterosexuals, only most bi people won't say they're bi and people are always going to assume you're just either gay or straight but never bi so bisexuals remain invisible. I find this very irritating, I'll try to educate people around me about these issues whenever I can. I loved this video, RJ! By the way the intro is great. :)

@mrmvpvip
@mrmvpvip 7 лет назад
You said you try to "educate" people but you simply say you bet there're more bi than straight in the world. That's not good education. Saying you're bisexual or occasionally watching same-sex porn doesn't make you really bisexual. I notice that most people like you always quote from a suevey or poll without realizing how unreliable they can be. More people "identifying" as bisexual can only be interpreted as more people identify themselves as bi, not more people ARE bi. If you do a survey on which pokemon people identify as, I bet you can also get a result of 50% of people identify as pikachu...BTW I'm a trans science student and I know better that simply identifying as something has no scientific meaning while BEING something like how a trans has the brain of the opposite sex does. Your guess can be compared to the old "there're 10% of gays in the world" myth.
@SimonaOmina
@SimonaOmina 7 лет назад
mrmvpvip You clearly don't get my point. I said I think not that I know and the educating part was about bi issues in general, not that I would be telling people there there's more bi's than straights.

I know no one cares, but I finally worked up the courage to come out to my friend as pan. But then we went to the topic of dating, and she said, "Would you ever date a bisexual guy?" (she assumes I'm straight, which is fair). I said, "Of course!" and her immediate response was, "I wouldn't. They're definitely going to cheat on you." I protested, but it just ended up with her saying bisexuals were slutty and greedy. She said it so matter-of-factly it was kind of depressing. So I'm still on the closet. On the bright side, at least she told me her views before I came out to her! Probably would have lost a friend if she didn't.

As a bi man I have experienced much of what you describe. I've heard people I love and still love, warn me not to be too open about my sexuality. I understand their concerns but I have also witnessed some of the most heartfelt support and kindness. I think about it like I do with most other social issues is that unfortunately these things take time but also exposure. The more often bisexuality is seen and the more people talk about it positively, then things will change. But we must all put in the effort. I plan to get myself involved in local politics where I live. And anyone who tries can certainly help but we must all work together and be strong against any negativity and hatred.

A lot of these stats are horrifying but also very intriguing to me...I’m a bi woman. Have a history of sexual physical abuse as a child by father and a family acquaintance and then of course fell into physical/mental abuse in my own adult relationships. Have never been able to make any relationship work regardless of partners sex. And then there’s the suicide and depression issues. And a laundry list of all the other crap. 15 yrs ago I stopped dating and stopped all pursuit of romantic relationships. Period. I don’t want anything to do w either sex as anything more than a casual friend. Don’t miss relationships...don’t miss being w others...and I truly enjoy being on my own. NOW, I like myself and am happier. Now I can be whatever it is I am and it’s fine. It’s not perfect but there are WAY worse things than being alone.

I've recently realized and have been trying to accept and deal with the fact that for over a year I've been have having dysphoria about my bisexuality, constantly thinking to myself "you're not being straight enough, or your not being be gay enough" and I have to make myself stop and realize that I'm neither, I'm bi and I'm doing just fine how I am. I'm lucky to not be a rape victim or sexual harassment victim, but I do believe some of my anxiety and for sure some of my depression stems from these issues specifically in the past in dealing with self harm and shicidal thoughts.I have two lovely best friends who help me through it. But it took one of them pointing out that it's most likely my situation at home and dealing with Bi Erasure there that Could be causes and she even suggested therapy, this video helps me realize I'm not the only one. Yeah, I was in the closet while on my active duty contract. Still my "shipmates" harassed me about it, trying to out me. Then I thought I was in a safe place with what I thought were my lesbian friends. (I ain't got nothing but love for LGBTQ+ today to be clear) To end up getting raped while blacked out, by the only male in the group that night, a higher up, meant to be a "mentor" of ours. And this happened after I sat the record straight to them b4 we started drinking. I thought they got it. I thought I was understood when they gave me the feedback. I told him I'm not even attracted to him, when they all got pushy, weird but I overlooked that & I'm still hard on myself for that. How does this mean "fuck me, while I'm blacked out"???? This is what I got for joining the US Navy: Military Sexual Trauma (MST). To make matters worse, the command I was under had repeated cases of MST. The rapists repeatedly got away with murder by "getting transferred" to a different command, with a clean slate. As for the survivors, the ones who spoke up, well, we females turned against one another. We females bullied one another. The slut shame started in the female berthing. To include, my "friends" the lesbians. I even turned on myself by imploding. Thank goodness I kept my mouth shut cause if I dared to have the balls to say something, I would NOT be here sharing this with the world now. Thank you for letting me know I'm not alone. At least I'm one of the few lucky vets who's getting help through the va... That's another struggle. PTSD, MDD, BPD, Panic Disorder. That's what the docs say I have... this is what I learned in the military, as a bisexual female in the closet, although males get harassed and raped too, a lot as well. I'm just glad I'm breathing today.

i am having a lot of issues coming out as bi. my family does not approve of the lgbt+ and i feel they would honestly kinda disown me. i think only about 4 of my friends might accept me and treat me as they do now. because of this i keep telling my self i only like men and therefore straight, and mentally hit myself if i think a woman is cute. when i had tested waters on my closeted sexuality by telling my mom i was going to marry my friend (who was female and it was a joke) she yelled at me and said i should never pretend to be gay or bi bc it is unacceptable. i am also scared bc my friends have said before, that people are only bi bc they are greedy, slutty, or just want attention. i hope i can gather courage to find myself and comeout but in this atmosphere, it so fucking difficult. im sorry for rambling, your video was great. i just hope no one i know sees this...

So this is just a question to anyone who is LGBT. I am a straight girl who is very passionate about feminism and other types of issues. Since things like this don't affect me directly what is the best way I can talk about things like this without crossing the line as a person of privilege?
@TheNotAdam
@TheNotAdam 7 лет назад
+Olivia Burke FANTASTIC question. Generally, the key is listening to the marginalized communities first, and letting them tell you about their struggles and the issues that affect them. You can then use that info and spread it to others, but always making it clear that you're just going off of what you've been told and you're just trying to represent the concerns of people who aren't present or able to advocate on their own behalf.
@punkcrazycake
@punkcrazycake 7 лет назад
This is obviously just my opinion but I would recommend when talking about these issues to stick to facts. Seeing as you don't have any personal experiences with for example bisexuality, refer to studies and stats. They are your best bet of understanding the issues in a community without being in the community. Also don't overthink joining conversations that are about issues that don't effect you. Being in a place of privilege doesn't make you unable to see the issues that others face, it just means you don't see things from the same angle.

R.J. I just want to say thank you! I am Pansexual and I have heard quite a bit of biphobic comments made around me. One of my managers at one of my jobs said to me that she told her granddaughter to make friends with straight people and gay people but to be careful and do not make friends with bi people because they tend to play around and can't be loyal. This was when I was just really coming to terms with my sexuality. You are so right about the negativity coming from others and I have even seen videos on youtube with some gay youtubers in the past that were reaction videos to "What do gay men or lesbians think of bisexuals" so I watched it and was appalled that there was so much negativity from the gay community about bisexual people. So many were like "He's just denying who he truly is." or "She's just doesn't know what she really wants." I was completely shocked. I know who I truly am an I am a proud pansexual male who loves people for who they really are no matter what. I am so glad we have your strong, intelligent and opinionated voice to help speak out for those of us who don't have much of a voice yet. RJ when you say Bi people are the most likely to experience violence is that between gay men, gay women, and straight people, or is trans included in there? It is SO hard as coming out as bi sexual because of the shame that comes along with expressing that identity. I think why most people haven't come out as bi is because of the fact that we don't have too. We have the choice to stay quite and date the opposite sex so that we can avoid discrimination. It's a very sticky subject which is definitely why it needs a hell of a lot more publicity then what it has now. So thank you RJ for tackling and expressing these issues ❤️

Well being bisexual myself my whole teenage like and now almost to 30 i've felt like nothing . I've just never would say who I am cause i'd see those around me be made fun or treated like whores and sluts. I'm more open now, but it's still the same from when I was a teenager. I date a man " Oh your out of that phase see I told you, you weren't a lesbian." okay, I wasn't but fuck you very much. I date a woman " Oh you're lesbian didn't see you that way." WTF ? How can you see a sexuality.. No and no my brain doesn't have a straight/lesbian on and off switch. No I am attracted to who i'm attracted to and I thought that didn't matter or that people would understand it's not a phase. We have our feelings love is love to us and when we fall in love with stay with that person cause you know that's how love works, but after having my daughter I gave up on people all together her father was one of those and a hurtful person. After that I just never wanted to quit. I haven't tried to date or say anything. It's like being in this candle lit room. There is a little bit of light and you get that from other bisexual people and people that do understand, but then there are all the others and they and the stigma it makes me want to just blow out that candle. Why bother just shut yourself off and never say a word . Don't be yourself and just keep to yourself. Those are the feelings i've felt. I've tried my hardest to get out of that place. I've gotten help last year for my Bipolar disorder and one drug they put me on was Klonopin cause my anxiety reached a point I didn't want to nor care to leave the house it took someone coming with me somewhere to get me to go out. I slept either less than 3 hours within 3 days or just on and off sleep for months. I didn't realize how much being considered nothing or " a phase" or " Attention Seeker" would hurt my mental and physical healthy. It did and i'm still trying to get out of it and it's hard. Days like today I should be happy to be recognized and validated, but I see more hate and disbelieve then I do acceptance. I actually have felt more like crying out of frustration and sadness then happiness. I say we have a long ways to go from my experience. It just hurts to know there is someone who is discovering who they are and realizing how little anyone on each side cares or notices. It's one thing when the hetero community doesn't think you exist it's a whole other when the community that you that you were apart of that you thought the " B" in LGBTQA had meaning look to you and say " No, you're not real. You don't struggle, You don't know anything. No one wants to date a confused cheater." So today hasn't been a good day, but I hope it was for others. We still have a ways to go and it's not just the straight people it's those in our own community that need to look and recognize that we are here, we exist. Stop treating us the way you, yourself hated to be treated or never want to be treated. Just because you in the community doesn't make you some great person. You can be in the community and still be ignorant. When you look at another's sexuality and think " Pfft that's not real get the fuck out cheating attention whore." This video though did help me feel calm like all your videos do. I'm so glad your here and you are speaking for us who can't speak. You are very important and give me hope and I just want to say thank you for existing and making me feel like I exist and I am important. Cause most the time I can't even think about who I am without crying so I just don't ignore it and mute myself. Maybe one day I won't feel this way. With amazing people like you out there I do believe it will come. Sorry I went and wrote a lot when I meant to just write something praising you, but today has been emotionally draining and seeing your videos always make me feel at ease. Keep up the amazing work. Sad it's 2 years later and your still having to do this, but shit as long as it takes push through till the wall breaks.
