My Judaism professor saw this story as Jacob having little to no work expectations for Joseph because they are a family of shepherds which is a hard, tough job for hard and tough people. A ankle/wrist length coat would not be worn to tend sheep, let alone one of dyed wool regardless of how many colors. Additionally, people of that lot/caste did not have extra clothing and what they had they wore to work in. So by Jacob buying Joseph a non-work type of clothing it tells us Joseph was not expected to work like his brothers. If you want to piss off your brothers enough to sell you into slavery, lounge around all day while your brothers are herding sheep in the blistering sun, freezing nights, sandstorms and fending off predators with a stick while living off raw grain and fermented cheese. All the while wearing an expensive coat paid for with the fruits of their labor. You touched on this theory and I got excited for a minute. Thanks for the great show!

I loved this episode! I am a spinner and Jacob is my absolute favorite of the many breeds I've spun. I receive unprocessed wool fleeces and work with them from washing to finished items. USA sheep are not dirtier than other countries as another poster indicates. Every sheep breed has different habits and breeders all provide different habitats that all contribute to the fleece grades.

Excellent presentation! Further, it is possible the coat of many colors was made outside the home and purchased, probably for a high price. If all that shearing, dying and weaving was going on at home I would not think the coat of many colors would have been so singular and that the other brothers could have/would have had colorful garments. Those are really filthy sheep in the video. It has been said that sheep in the U.S. do not provide the best wool because we tend to free range them and their coats are full of dirt, burrs, etc. It is also noted that in great wool producing countries like Australia, New Zealand and the UK, sheep are more confined and kept cleaner. It is very hard to clean up filthy wool. Another thought about the coat of many colors could be the quality of the spinning and weaving. Yarns can be made thicker and lumpier or thin and smooth. The latter yields a finer product in many applications but takes more care in producing and more threads in the weaving. There is a lot that goes into the quality of clothing. Since we see Hebrews (I think the Egyptian inscription says "Habiru") with colorful tunics in Egyptian paintings, perhaps too the colorful garments were used like business suits, something special to wear while trading. Maybe the coat of many colors signifies a more executive life for Joseph while his brothers were out in the fields herding the sheep. Maybe Joseph was favoured because he had superior intellectual skills which certainly seem to have come to the fore in his time in Egypt.

The modern translation for the "coat of many colors" passage is, "Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he had made him a long robe with sleeves." (Genesis 37:3, NRSV) The problem here is the Hebrew word פַּס (H6446 - paç). The traditional translation "colors" is from the Septuagint, a Greek translation of scripture. The same word is used in 2 Samuel 13:18 and the same issue arises there.

as someone who has been trained to spinning fibers into yarn or thread, one thing I know: even if the wool came from spotted sheep, each sheep's hair fiber was a single color from root to tip. So the coat could be multicolor, if there were s potted sheep with different color combinations. But you would end up with black threads, white threads, grey threads, brown threads, depending on the color of the wool from the sheep that were used. And how do I know what sheep's wool looked like from the root? Simple. I grew up in ranch country, and my dad's family were sheep ranchers even though my mother's were cattle ranchers. And my godparents had a sheep ranch, and I've seen them sheared.

Avraham Shalom Yahuda in his book ''The Accuracy of the Bible'' from 1934 has a picture of Canaanite Prince visitting pharaoh in Egypt giving tribute. The Prince wears ketones pasim. I.e. brothers were jealous because his clothes was that of a Prince. It is different from what you show, as it has wide blue and dark red stripes each having white border with red stars.

The Snake "not a snake" Snakes were not used as an evil symbol, rather as a higher intelligent and other respected references, i.e., the Snakes on the Medical Symbol. There are interesting references made between the Genisus Chapter and the Sumerian Texts that were far earlier and are said to be the precursor and also a part of the Hebrew Bible, thus also Christain Bible.

Can anyone answer this? So the other brothers sold the fathers favourite son and then what it says nothing about the family situation in the Jacob household after the father finds out jacobs gone? If anyone knows let me know but what he was just like oh well I guess we just go on without Jacob 🤷🏻‍♀️ that makes no sense to me

Long sleeved jackets used to indicate foreman status. As the youngest brother, it would have burned the butts of Joseph's older siblings that he was named foreman, not one of them. The Bible shows that God went out of His way time and time again to eschew selecting the firstborn to accomplish His will, save for Jesus.

If they raised "spotted sheep" then it's likely ALL the brothers had similar coats.,...Joe's was dyed., guaranteed.,..."spotted sheep", no way Jose'.,...this subject needs more research.

Omg could u imagine wearing a wool anything in Israel? I hope it was crochet so they weren’t dying of heat wool is a bit hot for that warm of a climate but then again ppl in warm countries during hot coffee to stay cool lol
