This subwoofer is in good shape but there are some small marks here and there.
Quality - 8
This appears to be a well built subwoofer but with a MSRP of $479, there’s definitely some room for improvement.
The cabinet feels inline with the price point, along with the quality of the woofer and the amp. I really like the soft rubber feet BIC uses and the fact that the power cord is detachable.
Bass - 8.5
This subwoofer performed very similarly to the Klipsch R-12SW I reviewed a while back with the slight edge going to the BIC.
It was pretty close between these two subs so I would likely choose the subwoofer that was on sale, if I were shopping in this price range.
MSRP Rating - 7.5
Considering the Klipsch R-12SW has a MSRP of $349, spending $479 on this sub is a bit of a stretch. Especially considering that $500 gets you into HSU and SVS subwoofer territory.
The good news is, this sub can be had on sale quite regularly. Amazon has it listed at $209, at the moment.
Aesthetics - 8
I’ve always been a fan of silver and black speakers/subwoofers, this sub is no exception. It has an attractive yet powerful look to it.
Just make sure the little ones keep their fingers away from the woofer as it appears to be easily dented.
Price Paid Value - 7
Not my best deal ever, not even close but I really wanted to get my hands on this sub so I was willing to pay the asking price, which the previous owner wasn’t flexible.
The good news is that I paid what I’ve seen it sold for in the past so I should be able to get my $160 back out of it.
Average Guy HiFi Rating - 39/50 = 78%
Final thoughts -
This sub, the Polk PSW505 and the Klipsch R-12SW are all very similar with the slight edge going to the BIC.
This subwoofer will make most of the home movie enthusiasts very happy with the investment, especially anywhere close to 50% off, which pops up occasionally.

@@blazermdx your channel is great, simple and to the point. Not filled with a bunch of catch phrases you see on many of the other channels. Good channel to help steer people away from just going out and buying a sound bar, not overwhelming and lots of good affordable gear demoed for people who are looking to start off. Also lots of great stuff for people looking to move onto their next upgrade .

Yeah, the SVS owners love to recommend the subs they own and there are more and more SVS owners each day. For a good reason though. They make pretty great subwoofers for the money. The problem is that not everyone had $500 + to spend on a subwoofer. Subs like this one can get very similar, in terms of performance, for less money. The good news is that EVERYONE has a budget and now is the absolute bet time in history, to be subwoofer shopping, at every price range. HSU seems to be my overall favorite brand, at this point. But SVS is in the running also:)

@@The300ZXGuru There’s no doubt that the PB16 Ultra is a great subwoofer, I owned the SB16 Ultra. The problem is that there’s other options available that are just as good or even a little better for the money. Again, I’m a huge SVS fan, I think I’ve owned about 14 at this point. There’s just a ton of options available to us consumers, which is always a good thing. Enjoy those PB16’s, they are awesome subs!

@@blazermdx the thing is when you get to a 2500 dollar price tag all you care about is the performAnce of said sub. Now others like the mono series and Sunfire and others are like you said great options but what you get with the svs can't be beat. Phone app really? Game changer lol

I've run this sub for a solid ten years and it has never disappointed. It hits low and hard and in my opinion, low levels don't get too muddy. This thing will vibrate things in your house (picture frames, vases and other decorations my wife has). She's generally not amused lol. I have put some blue tack on the back of frames which helps.

BIC seems to be achieving a great balance between budget price & Higher quality. Looked at entry level Polk/Elac/AcousticAudio/Sony/Monoprice & Top level SVS/JL/Monitoraudio but when considering affordability and good quality ,this brand is one of the leaders in the aspect. Cheers!

Great review. I bought a pair of these from Amazon four months ago for the $209.99 price. I am very happy with them. They do get nice and low. You are right, not too boomy. Bass is nice and tight. It was funny hearing your sample through my woofers. My woofers were moving along with your woofer. I have the Tron movie too. I haven't seen in it in a few years. I'm gonna have to rewatch it and have the subs do a bit of flexing.

For just over $400, I bet duals sounds pretty darn good! I’m definitely a dual subwoofer kind of guy. The results can be outstanding, if you spend some time getting them properly dialed in. Yeah, can’t wait for the new Tron to come out. Tron Legacy is still in my top 3 demos, even if it’s “only” 1080P.

For $400 and under I'd go with BICs upper level Pl200ii it's 250wrms or 2 f12s and it's a monster for the price of $299. I have the previous pl200 and I love it great for HT and music, the main difference is 1 port vs 2 on the newer version. BUT if you spend $100 more than the PL200 you can have 2 f12s and that would likely be better than just 1 pl200. BIC is one of the most under appreciated brands, I have the Acoustech PL980 5.1 set and it's great but wish I had bout the set with dual subs.

I purchased this sub a couple of yers ago and I’ve been pretty happy with it. I originally got it for my bedroom system, but was quite satisfied with the bass performance. I now use it in my office 2.1 system and it works great there! Though the bass does not quite dig low enough for movies IMO it is perfect for music - at least the sic i listen to. :) I am now running the SVS SB1000 in my bedrooom setup and i love it! It’s the perfect size and performance for that space. Technically it dos not dig that much lower than the F12, but in room i can hear a diffferenc.e Plus i like that its a lot oh really? ocpact.

This is probably the best sub I’ve tested, under $300 and it’s even cheaper than that, when it’s on sale. Really a great subwoofer but I’m definitely not surprised that you prefer the SVS. That SB-1000 is a great little performer!

$160 isn’t the best deal ever but if you are patient, it can be had under that. You can pick one up off Amazon for $209, which is also a killer deal. Got one in Jan 2013 from amazon for $186. really well broken in obviously. Running off the LFE of a Onkyo THX receiver. Has been flawless all these years. Sure you can spend more but i'm happy with it and company always thinks I dropped big $ on it for how it sounds with music and movies.

@@blazermdx If your looking for a Bic speaker to review Id recommend the Bic FH-65b, in the same formula series as the f-12. I paid $86 per speaker 7yrs ago to use in my garage but I ended up using them in my computer room cause they just sounded to darn good to be in a garage. If you can find them new under $100 per speaker that would be a great deal!

It’s definitely a killer deal at anything under $200. I think this is an excellent, budget minded subwoofer, that will fit most people’s needs. Especially if they grab a pair. You should be able to get over 1/2 your money back, if you get upgraditis. Which is inevitable for many:)

Agreed, Tron no doubt is a great movie to test a sub! I owned f12 for 6yrs and loved it, my Onkyo receiver died right before black Friday of 2019 so I bought a new receiver. I then spotted a limited time big discount black Friday retro sale from svs on the pb12-nsd so I went duel. Tron playing threw duel pb12-nsd's 👍. After all these years still I believe the Bic f12 is the best budget sub and a steal when you can catch it brand new on sale under $200.

That PB-12NSD is a great subwoofer, nice choice! I bought a pair of SB-12NSD when SVS was offering a sale and I loved them. The BIC is probably the best budget sub available. @@blazermdx The Bic fh65b bookshelf speaker is in the same series as the f12 might be worth reviewing. I use the fh-65b with a 90s Kenwood 2 channel stereo hooked to my CPU, no sub needed! They are horn speakers but don't have that bright sound like a Klipsch horn. The 65b's kind of resemble the HSU Research HB-1MK2 bookshelf speakers.

Owned this sub for a while; paid 50 for it. Definitely decent, especially for that price, but I recently acquired 2 18" PA style subwoofers WITH the amp on craigslist for 400 which absolutely murders this thing in every way besides deep bass extension. They can maybe get 5-8x louder. Honestly, even for 100$, id save the money and wait for better deals to pop up. Ive seen SVS subs go for even less than that on craigslist many times.

There's one of those listed on Marketplace for $95 in MI. If were closer to me, I'd snag it in a heartbeat. I actually run that sub currently, as amp blew on my high end sub a few years ago. This doesn't do nearly as well as my old one, especially with the low freq bass, but it really surprises me how well it performs for the price. I find that placement is a big factor with this sub to get best performance (even more so than is typical). Been running it for a few years and zero issues. Definitely recommend as a great budget sub!

$95?! That’s a great price for this sub. I’ve missed out on similar deals to this sub here locally so I jumped on this one, even if it wasn’t as good of a deal I’ve picked up in the past though. I was pretty impressed with it, that’s for sure. What sub do you have with the broken amp? Are you planning on repairing it?

@@blazermdx I actually gave the old sub away to someone to either reuse the cabinet or fix the amp, but I never attempted to fix it. I'd actually received it for free from a friend who purchased a house that the previous occupants left (in addition to a nice AVR and speaker stands). If I remember right it was a JBL sub, of which I didn't expect much (really only wanted the nice speaker stands), but it was a massive ported sub (twice size of the BIC) and damn that thing hit on all levels. Chest pounding bass and lows that would shake the whole house. I have no idea what model or year it was, but I remember looking into it at the time the amp blew and reading that it was a common issue and fixing it wasn't likely due to lack of availability of failed part(s). I do regret giving it away and not simply replacing amp.

@@blazermdx the bookshelfs are around 100$ usd and the fh6rcf speakers too around 100$ on amazon. Ihave the fh6 rcl speaker and its amazing for center, ordered 4 fh 65b (bookshelf) waiting for them to arrive, the fh 65b have 1 6 1/2 inch speaker and same horn as the fh6 rcl speaker, the fh6 rcl just have 2 6 1/2 inch speakers. The fh6 rcl is a sealed box and the fh 65b has a port in the back.

I hope you can help me out. I have 2 of these subwoofers and I have a pair of bookshelf speakers. I want to use one woofer for each speaker. May I know what connection should I use??? Should I use the LFE??? Or should I use the input and out put connections from the back of each subwoofer??? Also.....Is my Understanding that when the LFE connection is in use....the two nobs in the back of the subwoofer do not work because now...the receiver gets full control of the volume and the crossover points of the subwoofer. Is this true???

I bought the Bic pl200 in beginning of 2016. Only sub I been running and sounds great. Now I ordered Klipsch the fives to pair with it. I want full surround at some point but I wanted something to hold me over till then.

I went from Bic F12 to Klipsch R-12SWi. I still have the Bic and after watching your video I am second guessing myself. Since your reviews for these speakers is few years old, do you still like the F12 over the R-12SWi? The newer one at Costco is wireless, but that wasn't the reason for upgrade. Thanks

These Bic subs seem to be decent for the money. I had a PL200 (1st version) for a bit and although not linear, produced decent bass and volume. A pair of these would be quite acceptable on a budget. I've also owned the Dayton Sub 1500 in the same price point but it ran out of steam around 30 hz. Keep it up Dustin, I really like the frequent sub reviews.

Velodyne made the best, mass produced, home theater subwoofers for many, many years. REL was one of the other best OG subs back in the days and some of their new offerings look pretty impressive. Brands like SVS, PSA, Rythmik, RSL, HSU etc. have all brought down the prices and raised the performance of all sub manufacturers. It’s a great time to be a home theater bass head:) Thanks again for the support, my friend!

Question, if the sub is on but just in standby, and you put your ear up to the cabinet, do you hear any 60-cycle hum? I have heard this on several lower-end subs and find it very annoying. I assume it is due to the power supply build quality and the manufacturer trying to hit a certain price point. I have a B&W sub and the power supply/amp is dead quiet. Long ago i purchased a Cerwin-Vega where the hum was even audible with my ear away from the cabinet. I guess as long as such a hum is not audible if ear is not against the cabinet, it is OK, but I use that more a a gauge of build quality.

This sub was dead silent, as in no hum. I have purchased subwoofers that has a hum but it is almost always an amplifier issue. Another thing that you should look into is ground-loop. I’ve lived in places that would add a hum to amplifiers or subwoofer amplifiers. Almost drive me nuts at the last hell-hole I lived. A well designed, high quality sub should be dead silent at idle. What sub is making a hum?

I have hear it on multiple models in stores. Polks typically have it (and I hate to say that because i love Polk speakers, in general), but the one I purchased long ago that I ended up returning was a Cerwin Vega 12" sub. I don't recall its exact model number. It was bad enough to hear from a distance of a few feet in a dead silent room. I'm familiar with ground loops and have cured them in the past with using a 3-prong to 2-prong adapter. I recall reading somewhere long ago that the issue can be caused by variance between the neutral and ground connections on a receptacle. That seems crazy since they both end up going to ground but that has worked for me. What I'm talking about is the slight 60-cycle hum that is can be present in a sub that is has no connections other than being plugged in and in standby. It seems that many cheaper subs have the issue. You typically have to put your ear right against the sub to hear it, but it's there. I read it was due to the lesser quality transformers used in them and the sub box potentially amplifying the sound which wouldn't be as audible if it weren't in a hollow box. Now I typically listen for that before deciding whether to keep a sub or not. I would also like to hear you comment in your reviews if the auto-on power works well for the models you review and I have seen that be not reliable on some subs (cheap ones). On another note, you seem to be able to find some good second-hand sub values in your area which is great. I haven't had good of luck in my area. Do you test them before you buy or do you buy them as-is (which would be hard for me to do) and do you have a good reference to find the MSRP prices for the older equipment you use for comparison?

Great video, yeah I've been running a f12 for a few months now in my relatively large living room of my apartment and I'm loving it. With stock feet it shook the floor about 3 inches from the wall I definitely got some complaints. I switched to the Svs feet and it took away alot of the floor shake but kept the great deep bass only running it at volume 3. I have noticed I feel like ill need two, one for each side of the room to spread out the bass. Overall for the price this is a great subwoofer that won't leave you with upgradites trust me. If you're a nut job just turn down the db and cranck the volume. Plus im only running this off a Sony 5.2 reciever, waiting till I catch a Marantz 7.2 with some pre outs for a amp, can only imagine what it can push with that.

It’s definitely a very solid performer for the money, especially if you can get it setup in a dual configuration. There’s definitely levels to this subwoofer game and it isn’t really just playing louder and lower, there’s a quality to the bass with some of the more expensive subs out. If you are totally happy with the F12, just add another to even out the room response and to take some strain off the single sub. I was impressed with my time with the F12. @@blazermdx Hey thanks for the response, yeah I completely understand. There's levels to all technology, im defiantly a tech head and love seeing all the new products/ specs/ innovations. Of course id love a pair of pb16 ultras or rhythmic 12s, but in due time for sure. For now the Bics defiantly hold their own and when you dont have to anything else to compare too lying around then you learn to love it even more. Have a great day man!

On my sub - if I put it to "auto" - it won't come on at low volumes. If I turn up the volume 1 or 2 decibels it comes on then turn it back down. Weird!?

There’s nothing wrong with leaving your sub on, many folks out there with the same issue and they seem to just leave it on full time, to eliminate the issue. If you want to try and fix the issue, try turning down the volume on the subwoofer and then turning up the volume in the receiver. This will send a hotter signal from the receiver to the subwoofer. Otherwise, just leave it on:)

I think for around the $200 new you spend you can't do much better but at msrp it's not a great value as I'd rather have SVS PB1000 ($500) or RSL Speedwoofer 10S ($400) or even the BIC PL200 ii for $300 but provided that's a "$650 msrp" (also not worth it at that) sub. Next you need to snag a Dayton either SUB1200 or SUB1500 as those are the other budget bang for buck kings.

My first introduction to Klipsch was their original Promedia. That 2.1 set sounded very good for the money and I’m sure the new model is even better. That’s a great idea though! I don't agree with having 2 ratings tied to price as I've _never_ seen this actually sell for it's MSRP. Then having what you paid account for 20% of the overall score means nothing. If you get lucky it leaves one speaker over another. If something ends up being amazing people won't let it go for cheap and it's going to effect your overall score negatively. You should rank on what actual new street prices are and leave it at that. Then someone can judge for themselves if they see an amazing or terrible used price. 40% of the score should be sound quality. It's a speaker after all. 30% should be price. It's a product you're exchanging money for. All goods need to be ranked on value. Build quality and aesthetics should be 15% each. You don't want something falling apart, obviously, but I'm not concerned with impressing visitors on a speaker's looks. As long as it's not ugly. These 2 directly effect price, which is why that category should be more important. I got my F12 for around $225 new off Amazon a couple years ago and I wasn't expecting much for being so cheap, but I couldn't ignore the reviews. I have to say I'm completely satisfied. It has 4x the volume needed to piss my wife off and 2x the volume needed to piss my neighbors off while still giving clean, responsive deep bass. Maybe when I move to the country and get a divorce I'll upgrade, but for now this is good for me.

Depends on the ML sub but I would take a 12” ML sub over this 12” BIC subwoofer. This BIC would likely have more output in most rooms but I’m a big fan of sealed Martin Logan subs. ML just has a depth and “cleanliness” to the bass that just works well with my ears. The ML subs are quite a bit more money though, especially when new.

@@blazermdx Thanks. It was after your review that I picked up 2 ML Dynamo subs from FB marketplace. 1 ML Dynamo 300 for $100 & 1 ML Dynamo 700 for $150. Really happy with both. 300 works great for home office desk setup and 700 for small 3.1 HT setup in same room as office.

The HSU is definitely a good sized jump up, in terms of performance. Both are price category leaders but the extra money definitely goes to good use. 5hz lower extension is quite a bit, when you get down to this range. The overall output and bass quality are much better with the HSU. Again, both are about as good as you can get, on each price category. Larger rooms is really where you would notice the biggest difference. Thanks for stopping by!

I have been waiting for that sub specifically, as you are the second person to make that recommendation. One things for certain though, this BIC will definitely outperform the R100SW but it’s also larger with more power, so that’s to be expected. Thank you again for the recommendation! Since you have very good lighting, you should set your exposure manually. The camera was reading changes in light levels and changing the exposure as you or the subwoofer moved. It was as anoying as if flashbulbs were popping. I guess the audiophile in me is turning into a videophile.

You should see the outtakes. Haha! I would notice the flashing (wasn’t sure it was exposure) but I wasn’t sure how to fix it so I would just push through. I’ll look it up but is this a setting in my phone? I use my phone for all videos but I’m hoping to invest in a dedicated camera soon. Thanks for the advice! I know speakers, I don’t know video so I’ll look into it.

The MSRP is $475 but I doubt many were sold at that price. I think many people snatched them up around $300 - $350 when they first came out but I’ve seen them sell well below that. I have come to realize that I’m probably not as critical as many reviewers out there. I have been trying to use as much as the grading scale as possible but most of the equipment I review seems to fall the high 70’s - low 90’s. This subwoofer scored a 78% so when it comes to grades, that would be a C or C+. I have some speakers coming up that I am not expecting to rank very high, so we will see. I am seeing what you are seeing though. Thanks for stopping by!

The used market is actually pretty bloated at the moment but I’ve always wanted to test this sub out. I love reviewing the higher end gear but most of my subscribers seem to prefer more budget minded equipment. This is a great sub for the money though! What Audi do you have? I’m a bit of an Audi guy myself:)
