Just like on the diesel let your small engine 2 strokes warm up like these saws, weed eaters,leaf blowers etc etc. (You may have off camera but figured I'd say this just in case) but I was bad about this my self. Spoke with an old mechanic and he said this is a long term killer of these engines. You jump into the project cause your eager to get going and don't allow the engine to get to operating temp. My friend in the old days when we used draft horse for logging, had a chain saw kick back on him, of which it hit him in the face. he rapped the ranis around him and told the draft horses to take him home. A hundred and so stitches later he still wears the scars of that day.

I saw that comparison video with the 066. What threw me off was that you said in that video that the 066 and ms660 were $2000 saws. That caught me off guard because I bought my 661 with a 36" bar for $1350. It would be cool to see your saw running next to the ms661

wedges are a big help when sawing felled trees,they help you keep your saw free from getting pinched

I have a blue china chainsaw I purchased from Home Depot. Came with two sizes of bars and chains. Runs like a rabid beaver. I agree with Stoney. My neighbor has a sawmill. I routinely go down and get a couple of scoops of his saw dust pile. Take it back to my house and spread it on the yard. In new areas I use A-Tiller-The-Hun to till sawdust into the soil. Works wonders on soul. Good cutting safety info too Stoney

Whatever is done is carry a big coffee again about half-full bar Oil and about every second or third cut just dip the tip in the cayenne and rotate the chain a couple of Rotations. There is my tip for today thanks for all the great RU-vid content

Josh you might want to add at least 6” for trim. Some saw mills even requires 10” for trim. But I would say 6”should be fine. Hey you’re doing a great job. Also some plastic wedges work great. Mrs Stoney Ridge farm is doing great as well. Thanks for the video. We really enjoy them. 👍👍👍❤️

So just some info for you, been watching you for some time now love your show, learned how to raise chickens from you guys. But when cutting logs to prevent getting your bar pinched smack a wedge in the top. Also I noticed you where running your saw with a lose chain near the end, you want to keep that chain tight, failure to do so will flare the grooves the chain rides out over time preventing you to cut. Theres a screw to adjust the tightness of the bar. If you got any questions on cutting trees let me know be glad to help out. Thanks!

To help with pinching your bar if you'll pound in a plastic wedge on top it'll help keep the kerf open. You usually add 6 inches extra on a saw log. 16'6" etc. If your cutting for yourself it's not a big deal though. I have a mill that I mostly cut for myself and family. Sometimes I might cut a 4 footer if it's a nice piece.

I think your right I am the same way as long as it works good it don't matter what the brand is.

You have a huge point with teaching your wife most everything you know. I think it is great. I just hope yall are able to avoid arguments and she too understands the value. Another point is not only to save your life but If something should happen to you. Say a back injury where you are unable to work for weeks or years. She may have to do a lot of things on the farm. Really this stuff helps us grow and become better more productive people. These values and hard work built this country. As you say we should probably get back to them.

Good to see you are big on safety. I almost died twice in one day when i cut down a big oak and it fell on a 12 inch pine tree and a 4 inch cedar the pine and cedar were bent like twigs and when the pine snapped even though i was already running away when it did it still sprung out and hit me in the back while i was running, thankfully it launched me far enough that i wasnt under it when it hit the ground. The cedar snapped as soon as my bar touched it but it snapped past my bar for some reason and all of the energy in that tree went right into throwing my chainsaw at me, idk how far it threw me but my saw litterally bounced off my chest and i still had ahold of it so it slung out of my hand and flew a good 15 feet. thank god when it hit me the chain wasnt moving and it didnt hit my face, but it still left a purple line down my chest and cut my jacket a little bit and it still hurt like somebody catapulted a cinder block at me. Never touch a tree like that its not worth your life.

Years ago....way before the internet.....cell phones....this was about the mid 80s.I had read in a magazine article that a co-worker showed me.I actually think this was a Readers Digest.So this older guy in about his late 60s or 70s was falling trees out on his farm with his chainsaw.Not sure what state or what year, but one tree had fallen wrong and somehow had knocked this guy down on his running saw.It was said that he cut through his throat and halfway across his neck.The saw missed his main arteries in his neck,and the guy managed to walk back to his truck.....stopping a few times to lean down and blow the blood out of his windpipe.So this guy drives himself to his local hospital to save his life.Doctors at the hospital had said that this was nothing less than a miracle that he was able to make it so long and survive.The man said that praying to God helped and that he needed to stay alive to help take care of his sick bedridden wife.One doctor stated that someone could have cut their throat in the parking lot of this hospital....just a short distance away from help...….and bled to death before he could reach the door.It just goes to show you.....that this man was kept alive by a superior force and his love, to stay around to take care of his wife that relied on his care.

You know what chainsaw I like best? The one that starts when I pull the cord and has a bar that’s going to fit the work and cuts wood.

A little tip, on your regular gas can spouts those little two stroke oil cans make great caps

Remember that the new chain is stretching during use. Keep an eye on it and adjust as needed. That is a big bar!

I like using a pole saw to cut the limbs off a fallen tree. Keeps you out of the brush and less likely to trip over cut limbs. Plus less movement overall. Nice work.

My tip is cut in the wood slowly, dont rush it or force it in the wood.

It's all fun and games till someone puts their eye out.

When you're cutting and could possibly pinch your bar, you can either put a small stick in the cut or even a wedge. This keeps it from closing up and pinching the saw. Hope this helps bud.

I'm no expert but I Had seen something about making sure to run a saw full throttle for a little to get it up to operating temp before cutting. Cutting with a cold saw will damage the cylinder walls and ruin the compression over time. Great video and wish you and your family the best.

I bought one several Months ago and put a 42 inch bar on it--- Also bought it's big brother 105cc G070 Holzfforma Chainsaw.... I do Logging For my sawmill operation They are worth the money and then some ---- had a Sthil Ms661 Stolen which had cost me 1300.00 Never buy another saw that I can afford to loose and frankly I can not tell the difference in the 92 cc saws the 105cc saw in a beast.

Chain saws have come a long way. Back in the 1960's my maternal grandfather had a Mac chain saw for use around his lake place in northern Minnesota. What a noisy heavy thing that was. These modern saws are lighter and more powerful, and maybe a little quieter. They use less oil with the newer 50:1 gas oil mix ratios. Josh, that closing musical theme was quite nice. That will give something to think about on my way to church this morning. My choir is off for the summer. Carry on!

Hey Josh . Good see you guys. So this video of the wood chipper and just wanted to share the story about a maintenance worker that worked for the state of North Carolina DOT division of highways. He had a safety and it was a chipper that was outdated the safety regulations. The safety vest got caught up in a branch and it took him through the machine... Sad day.. the newer ones are roller activated with a safety bar. When you go forward into it you hit the safety bar and it turns the roller off.. since then nobody has been hurt can we get rid of those type of machines..

Sounds like the Chinese saw would be perfect for a portable sawmill.

I always overflow or spill my bar oil too. Then I got an Echo saw that is my new favorite saw, but the handle is really close to the bar oil fill hole. So I got a clear ketchup bottle and filled it with oil, then squirt it into the saw. Words can't explain how awesome it works, plus it is small enough to be handy to transport, yet, it fills my saw twice. I take the saw full, then I have two refills. After that I need an excuse to head back anyway!

Most of the Chinese saws like to run on 25:1 mix , I know some people run them at 40:1 or even 50:1 then call them junk because they fail .

Interesting use for the woodchips. Seems like a solid plan! I have a good friend with a cider orchard who uses the hardwood chip for the rings around his trees. Great compost for adding fertility and helps control the weeds.

Have you even looked on “made in China”. So much cool stuff. Every thing from widgets to ships..

No I am not a professional but you should use a couple wedges to help keep your saw from being trapped. Also that bar may be good for some much bigger wood but I bet you would have been better off using your 24 or 30 inch bar. That saw would throw some serious wood with a smaller bar. Keep doing what you love my friend.

Chainsaw work in the summer time is hard work, but I honestly feel that the sweat you make doing it seems to give you a feeling of clean that no other exercise quite can match. (after you take a shower, of course). Next time you are at a store with chainsaw stuff, pick you up a couple of the plastic felling wedges, maybe 2 of the small ones and 2 of the big ones. When a log rolls on you like that or pinches down on a blade, take and drive a wedge in the top of the cut where the log looks like it is closing up the most, for a log that rolls you may need to use 2 wedges- one on each side at the top. Drive them in with a hammer or back of a hatchet until the kerf of the log becomes just a bit wider than the chainsaw blade and it will loosen the saw right up. I have hurt myself enough times trying to roll them over to get a blade out to have learned this trick works a bit better. Thanks for the videos, have a good one.

Overfilling the bar oil tank. We all do it. I keep my bar oil in an empty one quart oil container. It makes filling the bar oil tank a lot easier than with a gallon oil container. I re-fill it, as necessary. I built the ms 660 four years ago. It runs fine. It is heavy, so I save it for big jobs. For most cutting I use ms ms 360 or H 372 xp.

I’ll give you some advice about your holzformma saw. The metal is soft, the plastic is hard and the carbs are crap. Find and old stihl 66 and swap the carb. Rebuild it first if it was sitting around. It’s easy to do. Replace the handle bars, the chain tensioner and if you fall timber replace the dogs. The Oiler doesn’t put out as much oil as the stihl but everything seems to be Oem compatible. Or run winter mix bar oil. I replaced my fuel line in the tank because the plastic was to stiff to reach the bottom. I paid 250 delivered which is less than 1300 for new. I’m happy with it

Get yourself some of the plastic wedges ( they will not hurt your chain if you touch them ) when you cut big logs laying on the ground, cut about to the point the kerf begins to close, drive a wedge in to keep the kerf open, it will save your back, butt, arms and fingers.

Not to take away from big blue, the rancher 460 could have done all that with ease. Combi-can seems cool; however, sticking that Husqvarna spout in a stihl saw just don't seem right... haha... have fun, stay safe...

36' bar to cut a 15' log, loose and blunt chain. Also judging by the amount of slippage in the clutch that saw cant handle that size bar hence the lack of oil, is wasn't designed for it. There is a legitimate reason why professional grade saws exist, for running a bigger bar on large stihl saws for example there is a detent in the adjustable oilier when running a bigger bar you turn the oilier past this point to give maximum flow. Possibly carrying a pump oil can to squirt onto the chain when making a cut? My recommendation would go back to a 20 or 25 inch bar at most.

Man I’d put that in a pile with some greens. Have some cooking hot compost in a few days.

Those chaps have saved my legs more than once. Its a B to clean out the chain and drive afterwards, though.

Just FYI, Mrs. Stoneyridge needs to be wearing hearing protection. When cutting long logs, you might think about using wedges to prevent the log from pinching your chainsaw blade. I love your videos

Why do you suppose loggers buck logs 6 inches longer than finish lenght? 8'6", 12'6" and so on. You need to use Anchorseal or similar end grain sealant on your saw logs. Left bare they will end check badly, especially since you only cut 3" extra, you won't get full length boards. Use regular laytex paint if you can't get log sealant quickly. Logs should be sealed the day they are cut in hot weather.
