If I were the Ladder 35 Captain or Lt, I would have switched over to the NYPD channel and get an NYPD wrecker there Code 3 to cite and then impound the vehicle.

NYPD Really should do an enforcement crack down. This is ridiculous in New York City. Are used to drive an ambulance in the Bronx and I'm here to tell you the amount of times that people with double park block us, not get out of the way was just insane. Living in Los Angeles now it is almost like Moses parting the Red Sea when code 3 is established, I laugh when LA firefighters complain about traffic not getting out of their way and point them to New York City. They don't know how good they have it.

i believe most jurisdictions have the right to remove any obstructing vehicle blocking an emergency response. They could not have pushed this vehicle out of the way as it would have damaged other innocent vehicles. The driver should have his car seized and his license taken away for a year (at least).

The Driver of the vehicle should be charged for the cost of the Fire Truck and all Fire Personnel plus any Liability for the victims of the Fire!!!

We have the same problem especially in South Philly, I love it when they double park next to an empty space. 😲 Push the car out of the way.

Our emergency pers are authorized to break into and remove any such vehicles on the video without regard to damage caused .Works amazingly well after 2 to 3 months and a few reports on tv and the papers the message got across and such parking is now exceedingly rare.

My dad was a cop at SJC Int'l for years and had a situation similar to this. Fire apparatus needed to pass a car & driver refused to move. His reason? He had a lot of luggage to unload (traveling w/ family) and would move as soon as he was done. Since cops were right there, he was told in no uncertain terms to move the effing car. Some people...it does make you wish they were allowed to just push the offending vehicle out of the way, if only it wouldn't cause damage to the surrounding area (or people).

Happens EVERY DAMN DAY. Ever been forced to make a right on red in NYC getting a ticket and then have to go fight the ticket because there was a firetruck or emergency vehicle behind you? Try telling Shanniqua at TVB... she wont hear you.

When the police and the fire department are on emergency calls, people are intentionally blocking their way and not letting do their job because apparently people these days have no respect.

They should have wrote him the ticket. Impounded the vehicle the city of New York should have charge double the rate to get the vehicle out and hit him with an additional fine for fun.

LAWS should dictate, emergency vehicles in code 3 blocked by vehicle capable of moving, the ERV should be allowed and authorized by law to move it themselves, push through it, or push it out of way, and have no recourse of action against the ERV, driver, or department operating ERV. Should the identity of owner/operators be revealed, should also be held liable for the repairs of said ERV.

My local department would have just pushed the car with them.

The police are usually accompanying fire trucks so maybe they can ticket these jerks, have their vehicle towed, receive a huge fine & spend the night in jail!

Carry 4 wheel jacks on the truck so you can move cars blocking where you need to get to. Even when a car is parked legally it could be blocking the spot a ladder truck needs to get to so having a set of 4 would let them move any car blocking the space without any damage to the car or ladder truck you would get from using the truck to push cars around.

There is no reason they should let that guy off. The office is witnessing what he did and should have to pay. Because of him someone could been hurt or killed waiting for the FD to response.

THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TOO PUSH THE VEHICLE OUT OF THE WAY THEN GIVE IT A TICKET WHAT'S FUNNY IS THAT THEY COULD HAVE BEEN GOING TO HIS RESIDENCE.

That especially is bad because, ever since their central call system got instituted, FDNY has run its appliances on a tightly coordinated system. Each location garners response from a set of Companies, with other houses doing transfer cover while they're out. Second alarm Company assignments shift. If any unit falls out of the mix, everything shuffles, and the Second Response now takes over as First, with the loss of many minutes. Since Truck Companies typically handle access, ventilation, and rescue support, that little van driver endangered one or two engine crews and a building full of people. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

His car should of been towed, he should of been fined, have his driver's license taken away and thrown into jail!!!!!

If I were president I would put an ordinance in place that allows emergency vehicles to move vehicles out of the way themselves by bumping into them to just move them but not cause a serious crash

In my country emergency vehicles have the authority to do what ever it takes to get past a car which might be in it's way. This includes ramming/pushing a vehicle aside to make way

Thats when you need one of those drift buster snow plows to clear the street. Luckily in where i live in Va. we don't always have that problem

If I was the firetruck Sr. Officer I'd tell his crew to check their headgear then have the driver lean on the horn until either the driver, Police and/or tow truck shows up. The driver should be fined $1000.0, BANG! (plus tow truck call cost) and if he/she doesn't show up (during horn blast) the tow truck will haul it away to impound. ;-)

Simple solution, make the fire engines a little less wide.

That's life in the city. Fdny has a system in place to overlap coverage in neighborhoods. Hopefully no one was in danger. There simply is just not enough parking for everyone.

In NSW Australia, they could have just shunted his car up the street. Many documented cases of NSW Fire Brigade wrecking an entire street of cars responding to persons trapped calls.

They should of backed up and rammed them at at least 40 mph

I would totally vote yes for a law if someone is/isn't in a vehicle and doesn't move out of the way push my damn car or whimever is in the way with your rig.

That guy was in a work van so more than likely he was making a delivery. I'm not taking his side but parking is impossible in NYC so sometimes you have no choice but to double park. I do it all the time and have anxiety attacks because of it because I fear this exact same situation happening to me

Next time, it happened they should call a tow truck to get the vehicle towed and charged for impeding the fire department from doing its job.

If you have to stop there for a moment, at least be on hand to run if you hear them coming. It looks like a few more inches over might have made a difference.

I say we should create a law against disrupting a emergency call / vehicle . Or at least. 5 thousand dollar fine minimum . Block / going around / tailgating and EMS vehicle . Blocking hydrants : 10,000 fines and partial liable for the structure damages .
