Benchmade is one of the world's most counterfeited brands. Far more than any other knife maker. There are more than 100 counterfeited models so only buy from an authorized dealer. Even Amazon sells lots of fakes. Thanks DBK for pointing out obvious differences.

The reason why. Benchmade is so frequently cloned is because they are not a company--they are a cult. They have mythologized their brand to the point of absurdity, and their quality has fallen tremendously in the last decade. Their prices have skyrocketed to mmatch their own delusions about their quality. and design, and their weird little cult of fanbois gladly pays these absurd prices, disregarding that their new knives are only marginally better than stuff made by Gerber or Mora, and their new designs are ugly and non-ergonomic. I'd rather buy 15 Benchmade clones, and use. them as disposable tools, than put a single penny into perpetuating the delusional Benchmade Cult. Maybe. when they start making beautiful, ergonomic, artisan knives like they did a few decades ago, I'd consider buying. them again...

I have my legit ones and I have a few clones. My Narrows clone is just fine considering the BM is $522! I have 2 legit Bugouts and one knock off. My knock off is very well made and very sharp. I have no issues with them. Is the real thing better? Of course. But when you start charging customers the prices they charge, it makes sense. I even have a few knock offs that are Kershaw. Again there's a difference, but however, side by side, its negligible. The knock off Bush Crafter you are showcasing I have and mine is like a razor. It maintains a good edge and I have zero complaints. The knock offs can be really well done. Out of my 50-60 knives, about 7 are clones.

Buying used knives from private sellers is therefore a nogo. I have often seen the odd nice Spyderco privately, but have never bought one because you can never be sure of getting a fake knife. The scammers not only sell bad products, they also destroy a lot of trust in the whole community. 😞

Off topic. I just received my BPS Bushmate. Love it. Compared to my favorite bushcraft knife its a very close second and way cheaper. It naturally fits and indexes in my hand. After a weekend in the woods, i cut the securing strap off the sheath in about 2 hours. Lol. I’ll make something else. But not once did i find the knife coming loose. I wore it dangled from my belt. Cutting wood, starting fires, cutting my steak. It did amazing. I really really love this knife. I also love that it says designed by yall right on the side of the knife. Great job. Thank you.

Other than having a collection of fakes, these knives are useless. And as pointed out, just plain dangerous when used as the real thing. I've never understood the attraction of collecting fake knives. Like staring at a polyester fake Ferrari body, bolted to a dodgy Ford Fiesta. Sure, it might almost look genuine, for some, but what's the point?

I knowingly bought a Chinese copy of ones of my Benchmade knives because I wanted to see the difference. To be honest the copy is really quite good. The blade is a bit soft, it's clear the the steel isn't as good as the original, but it's not unusable. I could buy ten of them for the price of the original. I'm not comfortable with the ethics of making a flat out copy rather than making something similar, people could be fooled into paying too much and believing they are getting the real deal, so I'm not endorsing them just pointing out my experience.

I also bought a few Chinese fakes, mostly Zero Tolerance. The quality of the titan and carbon is completely on par with the original, which took me by surprise. The hardware is very much worse, meaning the little screws are to soft and strip easily and the bushings are flimsy. It was labeled D2 and keeps reasonably sharp. I tested it at my companies hardness testing machine. It comes to 60HRC. That also surprised me. I would never buy it to rely on it, it’s just to dangerous with the tolerances Chinese manufacturing is known for.

There's a difference between a 'clone' where they even use the original brand name and stamp to pretend it's the original trying to fool the clients and a 'copy' where the model is similar but they use their own brand name and also say it's made from different materials and steel. I'm no fan of clones since they are trying to fool the public but basically all knives are copies in some way. The DBK knife is basically a BRK copy, but not a clone. I'm happy that you girls finally admit that making feather sticks is not so much about the steel or grind but about skill like almost all outdoor camping tasks. So suppose you like this model Benchmade (I don't) you now have a choice between the original that is 290 euro here (in The Netherlands) and make of CPM S30V steel or the Chinese made Sibert copy made of (what they say) S30V (same) steel at a price for 31 euro. So you can buy 9.35 Sibert copies for the price of one original Benchmade. So even if the Sibert is not really made of this steel (but maybe 440C) or hardened to a lower RC that's a lot of price difference.
@DutchBushcraftKnives

Yep that’s it. It’s basic copyright law. Don’t steel someone’s stuff.
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 6 месяцев назад
@@DutchBushcraftKnives Copyright on a model knife that looks like any other knife is not even possible? To get a copyright it has to be creative and original. I don't know any knife model that has a copyright since every knife model has been done before. You can have a copyright on the brand name and logo. That's why 'clones' where they use the brand name and logo of the 'original' are illegal but a 'copy' of the exact model with their own brand name is not. Someone can just use the model you 'designed', using other people designs, and produce a copy with their own brand name and it's not illegal. And that's the copyright law in most of Europe basically. Probably not in China where there might not even be copyright laws at all. But to break it down to the DBK knife. You use a handle that's a copy of the Bark River handles, a blade shape that's basically found in many other knives including again BRK, a steel that was invented by someone and in this case produced by TRC so there's nothing creative and original about it. It therefor, besides the logo and brand name' has no copyright. In fact you just used (you call it stealing) other ideas and combined them. You did what the Chinese are doing.
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 6 месяцев назад
@@stevanoutdoor dont know about copying exact dimensions but definitely logo’s, name and graphics are illegal. But design probably too otherwise there would be a lot of legal fallkniven copies going round which isn’t the case. About the DBK knife: it was all a big scam, even the steel is just from a random file we found rusted in Maarten’s shed. Don’t tell anyone!!
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 6 месяцев назад
@@DutchBushcraftKnives The clones that have the Brand name, model name and/or Logo of Fallkniven are illegal to buy and sell here in most parts of Europe. It doesn't mean they are no good but the brand name and logo have copyright. The model (design) and materials used don't. So the copies that use their own brand name are not illegal, not even in Europe. It's the same with watches for instance. If it looks exactly like a Rolex but isn't a Rolex but they still print Rolex on it pretending it is a Rolex is illegal. A copy that looks exactly the same but they use their own brand name is not illegal. It would help of course if you look into the laws before commenting. And in your own 'design' how many 'design' aspects by others you have used? Basically everything and not only the knife but the sheath also. Cover up the logo's and put your knife in between a bunch of Bark River Knives and a person not into knives can't tell the difference. Your knife is a copy of a Bark River Knife. The only reason why it's not illegal is because you stamp your own logo so people can tell it's not a Bark River.

Not to imply this happened here.... however, what if the Clone in a different case of circumstances, revealed that some clone manufacturing facility actually made a better knife than the original at half the asking price? Then who or what would we be pointing the finger at? Is it possible in the future, that the cloning process outpaces the original manufacturer with price and quality without having to do any of the design R&D?
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 6 месяцев назад
It could be done even with lower labour costs. but it remains stealing. For example this knife was designed by Shane sibbert who probably gets a small part of each benchmade bushcrafter sold. A clone company wouldnt have to do that either. But this is of course where it just gets unfair and illegal. Even though I definitely understand there are people who have less money but want the same quality and it would be hard to say no but i'd see it the same as buying a stolen bicycle for half the price. good deal yes but low honour :P
@alaskaraftconnection-alask3397
@alaskaraftconnection-alask3397 6 месяцев назад
Quite a bit of dishonorable practices from companies. From spying on the latest pre-production to cloning reproduction... it is what it is. Interestingly, an architectural patent is pretty meaningless nowadays. Alter Something by a fraction of a millimeter and it's a different product. Add a grain of flour and salt to some formula or recipe... it is what it is. My example above was hypothetical, yet possible for a clone to have comparable specs close enough, with the price competitive enough to be competitive. Sometimes production progression just happens to be a little tapping intel, borrowing and stealing along the way. Duplication scanning and cnc machining has made the cloning process just about impossible to deal with and too costlty to enforce.
@colbunkmust
@colbunkmust 6 месяцев назад
@@alaskaraftconnection-alask3397 You seem to have a misunderstanding of what patents are for. You've never been legally able to patent a recipe. Recipes for food are can be protected as trade secrets, but they can't be patented. And patents can't be circumvented by changing specific metrics, they protect intellectual concepts. A concept is not determined by measurements of a product. A knife by itself can't be patented because... well... knives have been around for all of human civilization. Only specific new engineering components can be patented, like Benchmade's Axis lock, Kershaw's Speedsafe assist, or Spyderco's Spydiehole.(Technically you could apply for a patent for anything, but if you try to enforce it you will lose in court if any similar product with the same concept existed before you filed the patent).

All blue class BM knives have always been made in the USA. In fact, BM stopped making knives in China almost a decade ago. So in this case it's sort of irrelevant. Example: the Spyderco Pm2 is a knife that has been cloned for years and the actual Spyderco version has never been made in China, even though some other Spyderco knives are made in China.

Hi gastuh! Happy new hair! Thanx for the video. Just ordered one from aliexpress. I know you guys dont like to promote these kinda clones but be real. Edge retention 4 times worse. But its also 4 times cheaper. I dont throw knives, i dont cut ropes 5 times and then do a paper test! I do what o have to do, and when knives (kitchen, fishing or work) gets dull i sharpen them in one batch. Keeep it coming and thank you for the promotion!

What do you guys think about Dulo knives making exact copies of great knives... for example the DBK Bushcrafter.. except for the logo ofcourse
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 6 месяцев назад
the bushcrafter Dulo makes is actually our first design. We asked him to make it. I think if for example this is the way to get a fallkniven like knife with wooden handle and the super steel you want it's not that bad as long as its not a big scale production and differs from the original product. These chinese clones are exact copies with false claims to materials and claiming its just an official benchmade. So i dont know. I don't fully stand behind the look alikes from dulo i think but im not against it either.

Please review a current production Mora companion HD stainless. Mine refuses to take a proper polishing. It looks like the steel has tiny bubbles inside and some carbide bands. The edge got flattened when I slightly bumped into a wooden cutting board while cutting some dried meat. And the factory grind is asymmetrical at the tip. The logo on the blade looks like it's just laser etched, not like on my older normal companion where it's stamped in. Maybe I got a scam clone from ebay. Or mora quality went down like fuck.

PShocking, if cooies were sold for the same price at legal stores, but righteous for „price hunters“ who think less than half the price is a bargain.
