Such a mystery why they were reluctant to let you get a review unit. 😊 Well at least Good E-Reader was honest about *that*. So now I get the standard. If a company refuses to give Voya an advanced unit to review, they're afraid of losing sales from a bad review & their unit probably isn't ready for prime time.
People spend a lot of money for these devices, Voya, so thank you for helping people make informed decisions. Kickstarter and Indiegogo drives are always full of optimism and fancy graphics but the end products can sometimes be lackluster. It doesn't look like this one is quite ready for prime time!
Can't wait to watch the rest of this one (15 minutes in, but I have to run out the door!) and to see your upcoming review of an Eink Gallery 3 screen! 😁🤩
Yeah I have the nova air c and this made me feel better about what was a much cheaper device. I know people don't love it, but once you get your apps optimized where you like them, stuff looks pretty good. Not lcd good, but feels better than this. Red looks red and I can see yellow, lol. And it didn't cost $800+. And the lag isn't ANYTHING like this.
Well I have the bugme inknote color plus (with K3) and the lag is not there and the colors are ok. Compared with my other device with K2, K3 improved a lot in clarity, the rest is fairly the same.
Yeah same for me. I've loved my Nova Air C. I was hesitant at first and almost waited for Bigme. But so far I'm really happy with my choice. My intent was to use my device for school notes, meetings, and reading library books so refresh rate was a big factor for me.
I was in the same boat. I was actually going to wait for this one to come out, but ended up going for the Air C anyway. The page turning buttons are great, no extra fluff like the cameras, and after watching this review, I feel so much better about just picking up the Air C.
I love how pissed you get with the notetaking feature 😆 I could hear your frustration. I now know why Good E-Reader's Bigme Galy vs Boox Kaleido video went on and on about the vividness of the Galy's colors but didn't really mention anything about performance. I'm surprised they stuck their name on that product, honestly. I thought they'd have ensured it was better before releasing it.
I think the front camara is for a meeting and for other people to see you. Even though you might no see you in a proper high rate, they would. This also applies to recording a video or taking a picture in a given moment. I don't take pictures or record videos, but people would want to do it in a hurry or for a lack of any camara at hand. Even if you were not to like the color reproduction in this device, you could see that picture in another. LOL! 28:19 "I'm struggling" I'm loving your vid!
@@andyjiang5809I think the major improvement in the Kaleido 3 Boox tablets isn’t exactly the Kaleido 3 but the refresh rate because of (I think) the GPU. All the reviews I’ve seen show faster scrolling with less ghosting.
Out of box experience for my unit has been Terrible! Touch screen has tons of dead spots, I have bad(hot) pixels. the unit is completely unusable. Going back to my BooxNova Air C, it is so much more responsive and I can handle the screen not being as good if the device is usable.
Very informative video, Voya! Are you going to do a full review of this in the end? I'd love to see a comparison with the Boox Tab Mini C (and even the Note Air C, though it seems like you might not have it anymore).
I've found that the pen fit on my case is much better than on your device, looks like they may have some consistency issues from device to device. Another issue I found was that the pen flap shouldn't be bent backwards while writing, it creates dead zones on the right side of the device.
I got a Bigme Inknote Color+ with the Kaleido 3 screen and first impressions compared to the Nova Air C with Kaleido+ on cell is that the Nova Air C is brighter and more vibrant than Kaleido 3. I've been trying to adjust the settings but so far it's very dark even with backlight. The positive is it is clearly higher resolution than Kaliedo 2, there's more detail and less jagged pixels.
The lag happens to be most severe with exactly the same colors they had the most issues with before it was released. Greens were the worst, and they got them somewhat usable last, and that’s what’s laggiest. My guess is they have to do a full reset of all e-ink capsules (so rotate fully to starting position, then other way, then slowly inch to the ”green”), and reason why is it’s hard to mix a good green with the pigments they use - instead of C+Y, it ends up being C+Y + a little M + some K - likely because the yellow capsule pigment is so weak and cyan is ”dirty”.
The red and blue pen colors have the same problem on the Boox Note Air C. The red is orange, and when it exports to pdf is red. Blue is also super dark.
AndwhathaveyougotagainstDenmark?🤓 Would love to play guitar like you (one day maybe). This is an eye opener. I will stick to the non-color screens for now!
Thank you for the detailed review, even if you called it a first impression. I was wondering about the color accuracy and useful refresh speed; the super dark "pure" blue explains a lot about some of the other images I've seen. With that said, I can see some use for the cameras: The rear camera could be useful for capturing QR codes or documents, while the front camera could let you take selfies for site profiles. Between the two, I suspect the rear one would be more useful and less of a privacy concern.
that handwriting performance is so much better than my 1st gen kobo elipsa. but the orange cast of the paper looks bad to me. maybe they can fix it in gallery 4.
This seems to be mostly a software problem (sans the speed) and probably will improve over time, being an early adopter usually has the downside of beta quality software
I have the inknote color plus (with K3) and I can tell the K3 has more clarity than K2 (I have the inknote color too) but not night and day change. The blacks are darker, the background is diferent color (less green) but that's it (the software is the same because both are bigme).
@Rolf The color vividness didn't change much between K2 and K3, but what changed a lot is the crispness in B&W and in Color. The other factor that changes a little is the color of the background, in K2 is more greenish, but in K3 looks more natural gray (not white but light gray).
Thought about waiting for this device but went for my tab ultra instead. Glad I did... this device looks ***bad*** . Perhaps updated software will improve.
you looked pretty much convinced about that reflective LCD monitor. Do you think that technology could work for an ereader/tablet/smartphone ? Do you know if anyone is working on that ?
There were a lot of devices supposed to be coming out with Gallery 3 in 2023 (like the Pocketbook Viva, and some Boox device), of which the Bigme Galy would be the first. Any idea whether these other companies will still be releasing them, or are they relying on Kaleido 3 completely now?
I was thinking on buying such kind of device but honestly, both Kaleido 3 and Gallery 3 are available let down: price and the refresh rate is very bad. I rather stay with my Tab S6 lite + Android e-ink erader, together even cheaper than these colored (dull) eink devices.
Maybe. But considering that magnets on boox device interferes with the screen... weaker might be actually better to not interfere with the screen and deform a handwriting line or pressure sense.
thank you for the first detailed video in the world. much appreciated. Galy has many problems in it's current software state. but it looks bad only because you didn't have Kaleido plus to compare. I have one. and the galy in your video has much much better and more vibrant colors) Kaleido is completly greyish. and it can't be fixed. the only problem with galy is.. those good colors are wrong for now)) red is not red at all for sure, but it seems like it can be fixed with soft updates. The early version shown by goodereader guys, had much worse green, and better yellow. So, i think bigme is still trying to set everything up with this screen. As for other problems you've mentioned.. they are legit too.. but i think you've just set the expectations too high. it is known that the gallery 3 is slow. it is just meant to be. in fact, it is so slow, that the 1 and 2 gens just didn't make it to be in any real world products, i think people just need to know what they're buying) and you the person who helps us with this) thanks again.
Thank you for the comment :) Yes, it's definitely better than Kaleido Plus, but Kaleido 3 is out, and that is the one we should be comparing it to. Hopefully they figure it out and can calibrate the colors so that they are better overall. As for the speed, that's exactly my point, I knew what to expect from a Gallery 3, but why on earth would they decide to give it 2 cameras, when there is absolutely no way that those could be used for anything other than OCR/scanning, and for that, you just need the rear camera. I think that the main issue with the Galy is that it's designed to be an Android tablet that happens to use a Gallery 3 screen, and not the other way around, a tablet that makes the best use of what Gallery 3 has to offer, which is what my hopes were for the Galy.
@@MyDeepGuide Same major color accuracy issues in goodereader preview of the Pocketbook Viva prototype (green shown as yellow) and there is probably a reason they always avoid using an ISO color chart so we have better understanding where the issue could be. Maybe software can improve it, but they had several months so not sure if this is fully fixable.
@@MyDeepGuide so true on the cameras, i can't understand the reason for cameras neither. As a person who pre-ordered galy, during the payment i felt like i'm literally paying at least 50$, for something that i wil never ever use. there is no point for the cameras to exist)
@@luc7976 i think it's not fully fixable. Otherwise they would've been more open. but fixable to a level needed for casual usecases, where you don't need a precise color accurassy such as work, painting. it's more for comic books, magazines, illustrations, if it was really not fixable to any degree, i don't think that PB or Sharp would sign for this)
@@deniskarasev8023 It might also explain why Boox was mentioned to be in the list of coming 2023 G3 devices but it still isn't announced so perhaps they backed out. It seems G3 is not able yet to get true reds and it always has a yellow tint (red bcomes orange). Even for books/magazines you can see in this video it's not great to look at without having deep reds. Also interesting how I heard nothing anymore on the Pocketbook Viva although Goodereader still lists it.
I think we all had high hopes, but this was a big letdown. Mostly, the colors just don't pop, nor do they appear much better than with the Kaleido screens. Although the Boox Nova 3 Color had ghosting issues when first released, later software updates hugely improved that to the point that it really isn't an issue, at all. If Onyx introduced a Tab Ultra Color with the Kaleido 3 screen, I would definitely get it. The idea of cameras are ok so as to move the device closer to a general-purpose tablet. Imagine using it for video calls and such. But the cameras in the Galy are greatly lacking in quality, and of course the refresh is much too slow. So, it doesn't really work, though it might in a device like the Tab Ultra. For the Galy, overall it looks like a significant step down from "old" technology, and it's a hard pass for me.
You are being hella dramatic tbh. Im looking at the same image you are and im impressed ha. Im going to be using this device primarily to read the economist and other magazines and newspapers. This thing looks perfect for that.
Different standards I guess. You could save a lot of money by getting another device then, if those are your needs and standards because this one is too expensive for what it delivers. But hey, it's your money, you can do whatever you want with it.
@@MyDeepGuide If you get a colored ereader and judge it for its color capabilities, you are comparing it to a technology that is several decades of age with a wide range of Gamuts - of course it's different (you're even comparing its subtractive against additive color systems btw.). Remember the first color LCD screens? Horrible from today's perspective, but back at the time? I once tested an Onyx Boox Nova 3 Color. I had to return it. Not because the colors were a wonky, but the contrast was really bad and made reading difficult even in diffuse daylight. I switched back to B&W. You mentioned watching RU-vid on it? IT IS NOT MADE FOR THIS. However, I do watch news, weather forecasts etc. on my (B&W!) note taking ereader and it is perfectly fine.
I was searching for a good tabled to be used for colored comics. And after all these reviews about Gallery 3, Kaleido 3, Bigme and Onyx, and seeing their prices, availabilities and how heavy they are, I went for a Lenovo M9 9" Android tablet. 140 euros - best decision ever, and I have no problems with color saturation, contrasts or refresh speed.
if I know correctly gallery 3 has a higher resolution when displays color (kaleido 3 half the ppi when switching from black/white to color), but is much slower than kaleido 3. If I'm wrong someone correct me :D
I shouldn't laugh, but I could really feel your pain when testing this device. The performance is really terrible in all regards. This is not a finished product, this is a poor prototype.
_Why is it so aggressive with the login stuff?_ You blew right past the TOS page, and in there you would likely have found the answer to your login question. I have no reason to believe that the company WON'T be monitoring and monitizing every single thing you do on the tablet by selling your 'info' to who the hell even knows. Then again, it's an Android device, so Google will also be doing the same to you.
It's a kind of cheap Woolworth design. For people in jogging-dress who wants *ALL* functions for small price. They don't be aware of qualitiy matters. Nobody needs a Camera in a reading- and writing device. No book has a camera... 🤣
Ever thought of scanning a document or taking a picture in class of a chart your professor just presented? These things are (in some situations) invalueable for a NOTE TAKING DEVICE. Believe me: I have been using a B&W note taking device for four years now and I do miss at least one (reasonably good) camera.
@@michimussato Bravo. So you can use a small pocket camera. You are obviously not the default-user. There is no reason for millions of custumers to pay for bad and useless gadgets, only because *you* like 'em. 😂 Next time you demand a car with wings and propellers, because you want to fly but hate airlines... or you'd like to be James Bond. 🥳
