Biker vs Residents

Wiltshire Byways

Not one but two residents take issue with our use of a byway open to all traffic near Bishopstrow in Wiltshire.
The lady was unwilling to consider my position and instead argued from a position of emotion. She did however acknowledge our right to use the right of way.
The gentleman took the time to listen to my position and understood that (as ever) it is the actions of a minority that give the majority a bad name. I assured him that I was a legal road user using the road on a legal motorcycle, and that I 'had a licence to lose'.

WiltshireByways It is so nice to have someone that is always so polite and responsible. I'm a dog walker, horse rider etc.. and the way you handle people who aren't always so understanding or nice to you is a testament to your manners and I certainly don't mind such responsible bikers going for a nice ride (:

Do you imagine that entitled woman picks up after her dog - maybe if someone is looking - but no way the rest of the time. Dog shit can and does blind children. These people are thoroughly unpleasant and belligerent. Take em on - politely and rationally.

@Midland Moto Agreed, it is also important to gather evidence of persistent harassment by these odd creatures. They are sociopathic by nature but that does not mean they have the right to interfere with others. You will not educate them - they were often educated as children to believe that they are the only people who 'really' matter. the best bet is to politely engage and then use the evidence in a court case for harassment. They think that they are the 'great and the good' and they cannot cope when they realise that they are not as 'entitled' as they think. Look at (their) leader Bojo - same belligerent and vicious hypocrisy.

Good grief - you are so polite - and rational - hurrah to that. I am a walker on these public roads, I also live on a (considerably busier) public road myself and would get a far less polite response were I to try and intimidate and harangue the users of 'my' road. Why on earth do these strange people think that they have any sort of right to constantly harass other road users going about their legitimate recreation. If they did not know that they were buying a house on a public highway then they are very clumsy and may have made poor choices - if they did know (and they did - let's face it) then they are fantasists if they somehow imagine that they have a right to interfere with other road users in this way. Several thousands of years of living history and a generation of swinish net curtain twitchers feel entitled to wreck it. I have personally intervened in support of polite (and they so often are) trail riders when they are faced with this kind of illegitimate and nagging nimbyism. These peculiar moaners will ruin this country if we let them. If you are constantly harassed by the same people or a collection of video evidence accrues around the same perpetrator you should bring a collective case for harassment. They win by stealth and by nagging their dubious political 'friends' on the council. People like this do not know the meaning of freedom or possess any joy for life - pity them - but do not let them take away your freedoms. Good luck.

That's a good point, though pedestrians do have priority over motorised vehicles on byways. It's never a chore to provide a concerned or ill-informed user with the information required to understand the difference between legal motorcyclists and criminals on motorcycles.

@WiltshireByways

No, I did. The main use of byways is by non-motorised users and walking a dog off lead is lawful, so it's reasonable for motorists to expect to encounter dogs off lead.

@robthomas3634 3 года назад
But the point is it's the lady that's moaning. The bike rider stopped while her dog was loose she should put it on a lead. When I walk my dog if I hear motorbikes or see hose riders on the distance I put my dog back on the lead in till they've passed it's common sens.

Rodders it has to be a Constable in uniform which is defined as readily recognisable as a police officer not full uniform. It’s not an offence to gesture for somebody to stop but there is equally no offence in not stopping. It is only an offence to fail to stop for a Constable in uniform. Section 163 of the road traffic act is the main power police use and it is to facilitate a document.

@WiltshireByways 4 года назад
They were public roads before that, with use by motor vehicle permitted (and regulated) from the 19th century onwards. That said, they remain public highways, albeit with a lower 'byway' classification.
@paramidge8935
@paramidge8935 2 года назад
You have not thought this through - forms of transport come and go - the carts that used to use these roads in far greater numbers are the reason that many old roads are now sunken lanes. Everything has it's effects and everything passes. The roads remain roads and should be used as such - our history and culture is strengthened and itself maintained by this. I do not always enjoy for example every busker I hear playing as I walk through town - that does not mean that I would want to see busking banned (with it's routes in oral history and the troubadour - essential to our evolution and arguably central in some form or other to communication pre written and printed text). We should be very careful before we condemn another man's (or woman's) freedoms. Look up Pastor Niemoilers famous 'First they came for...' written in Germany in the forties. The trail riders I have met are often involved in the maintenance of these roads - what do you do to help?

WiltshireByways are you sure, its a public highway and dogs do have to be on a lead if on a highway do they not. I'm sure there is a court case that proved this when a dog was killed by a landrover and the dog owner took the driver to court and lost, resulting in them having to pay all costs for the driver.

Seriously, long live the day when electric bikes are the norm and these noisy motorbikes can't be heard. I've nothing against these bikes using off road rights of way trails, but it's inevitable petrol and diesel engines will be a thing of the past.
@WiltshireByways
@WiltshireByways 6 лет назад
I'm looking forward to it too. I've ridden a couple of electric bikes and it's astonishing how differently people treat you. I don't think it's so much the noise for most engines, but the cognitive association with danger.
@trancehi
@trancehi 6 лет назад
Indeed and I agree with you. The recent Top Gear programme were show casing some new electric bikes riding through a forest in America. It's not too far away where we will all have no choice but to buy electric transport, I wish I could invest in it now, but the technology needs improving.
@paramidge8935
@paramidge8935 2 года назад
@@trancehi Yes - the petrol engine is passing - and necessarily so given the state of the planet. These little bikes will sip fuel I guess (I walk so don't know for sure) I wonder what the woman or old man in the video drive? Can we guess? Do you imagine they give a toss for the bigger environment really? Anyway these roads have seen drag sled behind cattle or horses - big old carts (for many more centuries than the internal combustion engine) and will see electric engines for a while going forward. The important thing is the continuity of use and living history that this represents.

Yeah. I wonder if he even realizes how much it must annoy people to hear him and his mates flying around on their dirt bikes. I used to live in an area where they rode up and down the same stretch of road doing wheelies. No doubt they had the same sort of "But it's legal" attitude as this guy. Part of me feels like they do it to purposely annoy people, but in reality, they're probably not even thinking about the effect it might have on other people in their areas because they're selfish and inconsiderate. This attitude is probably a result of mum and dad buying them everything they've ever wanted and giving them little to no discipline.

Brad H I think he's a grown man,plus a lot of the ppl he confronts are elderly,they must feel worried by lads on bikes hanging around and by this SJW drawing attention to his 'rights' encourages more chavvy oiks on there illegal bike's to drive these ppl mad,these rights of way have probably been there for donkeys years before even bikes were around and were originally there for ppl to walk or ride horses, as you say we get a lot of bikes causing a racket around where we live,I have no problem with bikes,I have been around bikes most of my life,my ex husband is a biker and has been for 45 years. This guy is out to prove a point while being 'look at me how reasonable I am' attitude, to deliberately go out of his way to assert his 'rights' is a bit childish.
@Howling-Mad-Murdock
@Howling-Mad-Murdock 6 лет назад
Ann Mitchell I think you’ll find that “chavvy oiks on their (correct spelling) illegal bikes” don’t care if they’re on legal trails or not. There are very few byways in England and there are plenty of footpaths where cars, motorbikes, cycles and horses are not allowed, maybe walkers should use those if they don’t want to encounter anyone not on foot. It wouldn’t surprise me if most byways predated the houses that are built along them, so people have bought the houses knowing that, in essence, a road runs by their house.

I walk these roads and I know that these poor trail riders are constantly harassed by such entitled people, male and female, I cannot expect to be treated with respect unless I treat others so. The woman and man in this video who stopped the rider were absolutely confrontational - the good reason and infinite politeness and tolerance of the rider win through. I will always defend anyone's reasonable freedoms and have fought for, amongst other things, the rights of women. This rider is not 'picking on' anyone - quite the reverse. If he were a lone female rider I wonder if the tone of these bullies would raise a pitch? Perhaps you would like him to be cowed by their passive aggressive bullying - what does that make you?
