The beginning of the mic’ed up super bowl 53 special told you all you needed to know about that game. McVay was so fascinated with the roof and just seemed too caught up in the moment. Belichick on the other hand is asking refs if the roof is gonna be closed for kickoff and how long it will take because he didn’t want wind to affect the kickoff if they won the coin toss. No stone is left unturned with Belichick and it’s fascinating how he runs that team

I mean, when it comes to winning, nobody can come close to the dominance of Scotty Bowman. But I think football coaches have a much larger impact on the game, play to play, than a coach in any other sport. So I'd argue that the difference between Belichick and the worst coach in the league is greater than Bowman and the worst coach in the NHL. But statistically, Bowman's got the strongest case.

No coach in any sport can touch Bill in my opinion. Constantly changing the roster and still winning 12-14 games a year is unbelievable. Play to your players strengths and don’t force anything.
@ColeAdams
@ColeAdams 6 лет назад
Exactly! I read a quote from Brad Stevens and it was about how he doesn’t create a system, he creates a system around the players styles, needs and fit. I think the spurs have a system that values the team first (which I like) but the players are tired of it and are turned off, but Brad Stevens is doing it the right way and he’s learned from Bill Belichick about how to build that. That’s why I think bill and the patriots have kept it going, they do value the players but you can’t mess around or you’ll get cut or something else. One sour apple doesn’t define the entire batch and I saw a report of a guy who hated playing in New England but that’s his loss, and he never played and seemed like a selfish guy. Belichick created a great environment and that’s why they always keep winning. Thanks for comment 🙏

Cole Adams oh yeah I grew up around a bunch of patriots players who said they loved him but he’s tough and said it’s not for everybody. It’s players like Edelman , Wes welker and Brady who thrived in the system because they refuse to quit, and players like moss and Dillion who wanted to prove everybody wrong and show they still have something left in the tank that make the patriots so great.
@ColeAdams
@ColeAdams 6 лет назад
Yes sir! I’m a patriots fan and Bill Belichick signed my football back in 2013 at training camp (which was my first time going there) which I got so lucky and he came right up to me and we had a quick conversation and he smiled so I could just tell he was a great guy. And you’re so right, he’s not for everyone because he is tough, but his goal is to make you better and discipline is the only way to be great. So if they can handle it he’ll make you amazing, but once you get over your head he’ll ship you out. Brady made Belichick and Belichick made Brady. Iron sharpens iron and those two are the best. I think just hate when people hate on them because I always lean in the middle and you really can’t hate those guys. They win but they do it through hard work which is the ultimate respect. Belichick is the 🐐

When you speak of Bill always playing a players strength, is something I was taught 40yrs ago as shipfitter, my Leadman told me “everyone has their strengths, finding them, and using them, brings us all success, trying to work a weakness just leads to defeat.” Belichick has mastered that, and it should be the hallmark of any good leader .

I’m a Steelers fan, so I had a natural hatred for New England. But the older I got, the more interested I became in how he wins so damn much. So I did a bunch of my own research, and even though I hate losing to them, I can’t help but respect how damn good of a coach Belichick is. People talk about how Brady is the GOAT, but they don’t realize that Belichick has more of a hand in the team winning than Brady does. They went 11-5 with Matt Cassel and 3-1 with Jimmy G. Belichick is also a master at personnel (drafting and scouting). He can do it all. No matter who his players are, he always finds a way to win. And when the Patriots lose, it’s because they get outplayed, not out coached. Belichick is a master and I hope Brady retires before Belichick does so people can see that Belichick will keep on winning no matter who his QB is. (Btw, Brady is probably the GOAT, just saying Belichick deserves as much credit)

Imhere Tofuckyowife Exactly. And Belichick DID do it with other QBs. They went 11-5 with Matt Cassel in 2008 (with their defense ranked 10th as opposed to 4th the year before), and they went 4-1 with Jimmy G in 2015 when Brady was suspended. Another big misconception is that Brady has “led” all these 4th quarter comebacks. But they fail to realize that in all of “his” 4th quarter comebacks, his defenses allowed 3 points or less. So it’s easy to come back when your defense holds them.

Ppl don't realize how much the league has changed because of billy B and the patriots. The running back position is devalued cuz ppl see how the patriots keep winning super bowls without a clear cut #1 running back. The jamming receivers for the 1st 10 yards has been changed from 10 to 5 cuz the rams bitched and cried about how Isaac Bruce and company got mugged in that super Bowl against the pats. The hitting the QB rule was changed cuz of Brady's injury. The kick off has been changed because Bill is the one that proposed the rule change and others signed off on it cuz it made sense. There use to barely be any white wide receivers, now cuz of how amazing Wes Welker was now every team has a white wide receiver lol I can go on and on. Bill is amazing!

But Bill was a coach for the Browns from 1991-1995, which would move to Baltimore and found the Ravens franchise and would win the Super Bowl in their first 5 years of existence, as well as establish a consistently dominant defense every year, which Bill help create a foundation for. When the Browns came back in 1999 they were a completely new team under new ownership with only one player from the previous franchise. So really Bill has no reason to have an issue with the franchise, right? And to be honest, looks kind of petty in context. Or at least the context I have, just trying to start a discussion.

I think his greatest attribute is that he understands the psyche and mindset of NFL people. Be it coaches, players, GM's, etc. Let's face it...he cheated in SpyGate. But, almost every coach out there would have rested on his laurels with that success. Instead, Belichick continued to work on how to improve his team and started to get into the heads of competitors of 'The Patriot Way.' The reality is that he is on the forefront of understanding schematics and game theory. And he knows how to develop and coach talent. He knows that this is a copycat league and just when other teams start copying what he is doing...he advances to new strategies...always keeping the rest of the league a step behind. The other big thing is that he coaches players. The other coaches coach scheme. He compiles talent and then tries to figure out what they can and can't do and then adjust accordingly. Other coaches have a scheme that they want to coach and try to find talent according to that scheme and too often get players doing things that they are not good at because they need to do it to make the scheme work. Some people call Brady a 'system QB', but it's really just Belichick creating a scheme that fits Brady's strengths...which is the smart thing to do.

I'm from Cleveland and I've been fascinated by Belichick since he coached the Browns. Even then, he was tight-lipped at press conferences and fans didn't like him for that and I said, wait, so now we're judging coaches by how much we like what they say at press conferences? What I can't figure out is why other coaches talk so much. They talk to reporters and talk and talk and talk and if they talk long enough, they say something the reporter can turn into click bait and cause problems for the coach. Nothing good can happen to a coach at a press conference. The best he can hope for is that nothing bad accidentally comes out of his mouth. And most reporter questions are stupid because there are very few good questions that a coach with half a brain will answer in public.

eklashur rahman it is objectively harder to win a championship and sustain that success in American football than English football. Until recently there were only 4 or 5 teams in England who were capable of winning the league in any given year. Ferguson never had to deal with a league that *by design* makes it extremely difficult to retain star players and stockpile young talent. Things like the salary cap, free agency, and draft level the playing field while in English football you can literally buy the best players at either pro or youth level and treat them like property until you sell them to another team. Belichick has constantly had to innovate and pioneer new ways of having success throughout his career. He has shifted focus back and forth between offense and defense, and he has figured out new ways of operating within the draft and free agent markets to find quality players. Every time Ferguson lost a big player he bought another one and he played 4-4-2 his entire career. Belichick has started a revolution in how fans and coaches think about the game at least twice. Ferguson also had incredible access and power within the English FA whereas the most famous scandal in recent American sports was the NFL fucking over belichick during deflate gate. I am not a Belichick fan, in fact he totally screwed over my favorite team (Browns) at the beginning of his career. But he’s a better coach and manager of a team than Ferguson.

I don't know if he's the best FB coach *ever*, but he's certainly the best coach in the free agency era … by far. It's hard to compare eras because there are different pressures, etc. Bill Belechik is outstanding at getting smart and tough players who aren't as valued by other teams, and getting more out of them than anyone else. And turning teams full of this sort of player with some stars added in, into champions. Remember that first SB team in the early 2000's? That was practically a team of no-names with very few real stars. Heck, even Brady wasn't really a star at that point. Oh, he was definitely a rising talent, a star in the making, but no one would have put him in the same conversation with the great QBs at that time. And at that time, who would have ever thought that Brady would end up being considered the GOAT, or that the Brady-led Pats would win SIX Super Bowls (with the possibility of more)? Another thing. I think that Brady and Belechik benefit from each other. Belechik is great at building excellent teams and strong defenses, and managing the salary cap. And Brady gives him an unquestioned leader on the field and in the clubhouse, not to mention all his on-field heroics. I don't think that one could do what the Pats have done in the past nearly 18 years without the other. They may arguably be the greatest long term head coach/QB tandem in NFL history.

I know Tom Brady gets the lion's share of attention for the success of the Patriots, but my attention has always been on the defensive teams. Despite the huge turnover on the Patriots lineup (Seymour, Wilfork, Meriweather, Butler, the list goes on), this team has remained consistently good. It's hard to build a system where a player knows his place, and props to Bill for succeeding.

Ernie Adams is the mad scientist and brains behind the Patriots dynasty. He sits in the press box during games wearing a headset and he's constantly in Belichicks ear during the game. It was Ernie, who figured out from his scouting that Seattle would pass from the goalline out of that particular formation which led to Butler's INT. Adam's is insanely smart and that's who Belichick talks with every game in his headset.

Add Hue Jackson to the list of bad coaches. Any coach who hires Gregg Williams after his many offenses (with defenses) should be banned from the NFL. There is no excuse for this behavior. Yes, I would also eliminate bad owners and Goodell as well. Goodell is merely someone who wants to be popular. He does not do what is right.

What makes Bill Belichik successful? Easy answer: Tom Brady. Just look at his record with Tom Brady and without, tells it’s own story. (Edit: With Tom Brady(as of now) Record: 197-55 Without Tom Brady Record: 54-63. It’s not even hard to understand his success, it has shit to do with his philosophy, because without Tom Brady his philosophies amounted to a less than .500, below average coach.)
@jbbio103
@jbbio103 5 лет назад
How old are you? Brady was basically a game manager for the first 4 years of his career while the Pats D (under Belichick) mopped the floor with the league and led them to their first 3 Super Bowls. Plus Belichick's sub .500 time came with the freaking Browns. And he took them to the playoffs. And WON A GAME. Name any other coach that could do that.
@completecontroll7165
@completecontroll7165 5 лет назад
The Slippery Fish again, record with, and record without. 2 completely different stories, the one difference being Brady. And I’m 43years old, I saw the 85 Patriots Super Bowl, and the Green Bay one with Bledsoe, that has zero to do with Belichiks record without Brady. Cleveland you have that 2 year excuse, and that year with Bledsoe in NE, and Cassel, and yet nowhere near the same record as when he had Brady. If his attitude and system won all those rings, then he would have a track record of more than just 1 successful QB.
@dannyboy6815
@dannyboy6815 5 лет назад
Complete Controll the interesting thing is people say Tom is good because of Bill and they say Bill is good because of Tom. But if you read the following books “War Room” and “Patriots Reign” you would see that the two are incredibly smart and know their football. How great they work together. That Bill really is some football guru and that Tom is a Bill Belichick on the field except he has an arm. They compliment each other and are as good as they are because they work great together
@completecontroll7165
@completecontroll7165 5 лет назад
Danny Boy I agree it’s a relationship thing, but success lies in executing on the field, Tom Brady, and I would go so far as 75/25 Brady over Belichik. We have proof of his record without Brady, Brady only has him for reference, Tom by default. Bills numbers without him make him not even a sniffing Hall of Fame bum. Walsh, Montana. That’s the only comparable type relationship where both were responsible for the others success, although both possibly could’ve done it in other situations. I agree with you though, it’s a relationship. You ask NE fans you get Brady or Belichik, not both. I’d guess fans go 80% Brady.
@slackbomslack6212
@slackbomslack6212 5 лет назад
Dude, since weeding out the players who wouldn’t fit and installing his culture in NE that first year, Belichick is 14-6 without Brady. 11-5 with a QB whose last start was against high schoolers and 3-1 with a QB who had zero starts in the NFL. Remember Brady gets to pass to Belichick-coached receivers, gets blocked for by Belichick-coached lineman, and hands off and passes to Belichick-coached TEs and backs. He’s the GOAT of any sports coach in history.

Ill say its interesting to compare the coaches/managers. However, both sports require the same amount per side and yes American Football gets the substitutionon every play, but there is no way Soccer (im American) could compete if it had the NFLs rules. Those skirts whine if their knee touches grass. Belichick is more impressive, go back to knitting. Its not even close
@j.m.5744
@j.m.5744 5 лет назад
Who??? What sport is that?? I had to google it...soccer?!??! Are you serious...lmao. American football is far more complex of a sport than soccer could ever hope to be. That's why it is only played in this country at such a high level, you need to live it from a young age to even have a chance to be successful on a level as high as the NFL and in terms of coaching you are so far off it's sad. Typical of someone who plays soccer and I'm not being cute here... Soccer and the strategic thinking and planning that goes into it, is a game for kids and simple people from 3rd world countries who cant even read. The NFL, football on this level, takes so much more intelligence and knowledge and discipline than soccer is even designed to need. It's a joke. Relax with comparisons to the NFL and soccer like it's even in the same realm if competitive sports. Go kick a ball around or something and remember, dont use your hands lmao. Moron.

I love dugout as much as the field if I'm honest and Bill Belichick, Sir Alex Ferguson, Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, Pep Guardiola, Brian Clough, Bill Parcels, José Mourinho, Arséne Wenger, Greg Popovich, Johan Cruyff are as colourful as characters as much as the best players any of them coached. Every successful sports team is a manifestation of a genius philosophy. Bill and the rest of those guys have a standard at they're teams and it trickles down the whole way through the organisation. But I honestly think Bill is a top of that list, give him his flowers while he can still appreciate As Sir Alex would put it: 'At the top level, the margins are so small. The best players want to be pushed and coached, they can't walk back in my dressing room without giving me their best. They know that; the boys turn to men very quickly here'.

As a Patriots fan it has been a supreme privilege to have Bill Belichick as my favorite team's head coach. I also love the way he takes on the media to protect his team. His press conferences are almost as entertaining as the games themselves. I feel if the NFL wasn't so corrupt he'd have at least 4 more Super Bowl rings.

Good job full of good observations. Would've liked more clarity in the Seahawks Super-B moment (3:55) when BB advises Brady to just draw them offside to escape his own 1-yard line. (Seahawk and now Patriot Michael Bennett obliges!). Using BB's older advice to another on this situation works OK---but what actual words did BB say in the Seattle Super? Cannot read his lips but it's like he's saying "Just DON'T snap the ball, make them encroach!"

If you look into that goal-line forced offside play in the SEA/NE game, it’s actually far more incredible. The player that jumped offside was Bennett, a player they knew was prone to jumping offside that season. They forced him to jump offside.. just watch. Fucking amazing how much BB actually includes into his coaching.
