A lesser known, but still entertaining Reynolds film from that era, is _Stick_ (1985). Burt doing his Burt thing - with lots of action, women, drugs, chases, stunts, weird characters - and set in Florida. Based on an Elmore Leonard novel - and directed by Burt himself. Check it out.
Just got my director's ( Burt ) cut of Stick. Many different things the studio changed for the theatrical release. For example ( and spoiler ) he gets together with Chucky to produce a movie - really just a ploy to soak Chuckie for $$'s. And, turns out Stickley was too much for Candice.
Reynolds seemed to have a thing with stuntman/director Hal Needham similar to that of John Wayne and John Ford. He liked making movies with his buddies, so there's this cycle that came about right when CB/trucker culture, "Dukes of Hazzard," and the whole "Urban Cowboy" fad sorta swirled together and manifested in the Reynolds-Needham film cycle, roughly from '77-83 (starting with "Smokey and the Bandit" and ending with "Stroker Ace"). Clint Eastwood tried his hand at all this with the ""Every Which Way" movies, "Bronco Billy," and "Honkytonk Man." But yeah, "Sharky's Machine" is an overlooked gem.
I finally saw Sharky's Machine and several other Burt movies over the passed few years. One underrated flick he did with Clint Eastwood is called "City Heat". "Malone" is another good sleeper hit.
@@samanthab1923 Love Shamus, one of my favorites. Prob in my top 5. Also in there, a made for tv movie Run Simon Run. If you, and anyone else seeing this, hasn't seen The Hollywood Sign, w/Burt, Tom Berenger & Rod Steiger, give it a watch. Burt is great in it.
I got my mom to take me to see Sharky's Machine when it came out in the theaters. The movie has so much epicness. Some brutal violence, beautiful women, cool ass jazz music and very funny ( at times) dialogue. I had the movie poster on my wall for years. One of my favorite movies. And the same can be said about Thief! Another favorite. First time I ever saw Jim Belushi. He was really young. He didn't say much but he had a very cool and violent death scene. I would recommend them both to anyone!
I was born in '78 and grew up watching a lot of Burt Reynolds. His comedies are better known but movies like Sharky's Machine, Stick, Heat (1986), and Rent-a-Cop are all awesome.
the part of Burt Reynolds no one really seems to get or appreciate these days is the fact that he NEVER took himself seriously - he just loved making movies - that is why his movies (even the "bad" ones like Gator and Cannonball Run 2) were so enjoyable - and yeah he was a great actor with the right material (Boogie Nights, Deliverance)
Definitely. I'd also highly recommend "The Stone Killer" (1973) with Charles Bronson, Reynold's "Dan August" pal Norman Fell; and his future castmate John Ritter is in it too. Great car chase scene in it, very underrated movie.
Isnt he the only one left that puts these clips together? Most people just take podcast clips and dont even take the time to find the corresponding clips. Izzy a legend.
Legend has it when Clint Eastwood was about to do the movie Every Which Way but Loose he sent the script to Burt Reynolds because he was hesitant about doing comedy Legend has it Burt Reynolds told him if you start doing movies like this you're treading on my territory if the movies a hit then I'll have to do a movie where Dirty Harry goes to Atlanta when Clint Eastwood heard about Sharky's Machine he sent Burt Reynolds a telegram with the words you weren't kidding were you?
Tarantino wanted Burt for the Bruce Dern role in, _Once Upon a Time in Hollywood_ but sadly, Burt passed away. Burt was more of a stunt man's actor, he knew ALL the stuntmen, they were a fucking CREW back in the day.
I want to see Bill Burr have a conversation about 1970's Movies with Quentin Tarantino. They both love em and are passionate when talking about them. They both love badass action flicks but Quentin loved the Exploitation Movies and Spaghetti Westerns while Bill loved the Mainstream shit from the 70's.
Burr's got that thing that another comedian had that might surprise you, if you're not a huge fan of old movies - Don Rickles. Rickles did not goof around, he took acting seriously, and so does Burr.
One of Burt Reynold's best movies that the critics hated was Hustle, co-starring Catherine Deneuve. It was dirty, violent, and very, very good. Not a happy film by any means, but Reynolds gave a terrific performance.
my favorite era for burt movies is generally over all before smokey/bandit : sam whiskey, 100 rifles, fuzz, deliverance, original longest yard, run simon run, killers are for killing aka hardframe, shamus, the man who loved cat dancing, gator, white lightning, hustle, semi-tough and my very favorite : ww and the dixie dancekings. i also like rough cut 1980 + sharkey's machine.
It's funny, I just recently watched Smokey and the Bandit for the first time in years, it's really held up well. Really funny film. Of course, Gleason had lots to with that, but Burt was great as well.
Burt was in movie called Shark in the early/mid 70's that I watched in the mid 80's as a child, and too the day that man is the opitimey of cool. I always thought he looked like my dad and I love his early work. He actually turned down Cuckoos Nest and Terms of Endearment which were two of Nicholsons 3 Oscar wins. I agree with Bill. He was never utilized correctly
Apparently Burt Reynolds really didn't want to do Boogie Nights. The rumor is that he said no 7 times before he said yes to the movie and he fired his agent after seeing the rough cut. The only reason he said yes was because he was in very bad financial shape at the time. It's probably one of the few times that an actor reluctantly agreed to be in a movie yet the movie turned out great and the actor gave a great performance.
When was the last time there was a good car movie? Depending on what you consider "good", the "Fast and the Furious" franchise might be something to check out.
You gotta watch 'Rent A Cop' with Burt Reynolds and Liza Minnelli! 😂👍 Burt plays almost a caricature of himself, like Norm MacDonald is playing him 🤣 The movie is soo bad it's good, me and my buddies used to always put it on when we were trashed for good laughs!
Unfortunately out of loyalty to the director h a l native who directed him in several movies including Smokey and the Bandit he chose to do that movie instead of the role that was offered to him that one Jack Nicholson the Academy Award for Terms of Endearment
Sharky's Machine, Heat and Malone are my favorite Burt movies. I agree his comedies were good but I prefer him in the gritty action sometimes noir type movies. He was so good in them.
And also great - this was the era of legendary stuntman Dar Robinson, who played the bad guy's right hand man, and who invented the decelerator he used in the final high fall.
@@ThatOldGrey Dar also went off the building in Sharkey's Machine. Live just outside Atlanta at the time they were filming. Got to see it. 2 or 300 yards away thru binoculars, but hey........
Reynolds might’ve pulled off a hairpiece, better than anyone in movies. If you look at his college football pictures, he had less hairline in the front, than in The Longest Yard. 😆
