I can't believe Sherri asked Bill Maher if he talked to god. I don't know why people applauded her, either. But Bill's face when she asked him that was hilarious.
Mr Gaudy An atheist will never have any intellectual influence on a believer. Believers are deaf to any logical argument, and will not be reasoned out of their views because reason did not lead them into their views in the first place. They say arguing with a believer is like trying to play chess with a pigeon - the pigeon will ignore the rules of the game, knock all the pieces down, crap all over the chessboard, then fly back to its flock to proclaim victory.
mjwemdee Even worse are the young earth creationists... If a creationist had one more brain cell he'd have a binary system !! Luckily the YEC's virtually don't exist down here in Australia ! We laughed Ken Ham out of the country and New Zealand did the same to Ray Comfort !! Australia doesn't need a creation museum... our whole continent is just one big ass evolutionary museum... our unique flora and fauna provide so much evidence for evolution! There is no mention of kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, emus or wombats in the bible - I wonder why ... lol
+FeelinErie thing is though, for religious people using logic isnt the be all end all to their decision making, so for them to admit that to believe, is to suspend some (or alot in this case) logic, isnt very hypocritical...
only a fool admits they don't need logic. like, what? that is what ought to be used in all decision making and "belief systems." they're basically saying its illogical to believe in a man in the sky who sees everything... and it is. she's admitting you have to not be very smart or not think in order to believe. *sigh*
People need to realize that religion is nothing more than an elaborate coping mechanism. And like all deeply ingrained coping mechanisms, the person wielding it is not at all conscious of its presence. It requires a stalwart mind to bear the yoke of unhampered reason and logic.
roomie4rent Well you said "people need to realize..." as if you're trying to insist people whould change their minds, and then you say that they can't change their minds, So what was the point of that? lol
+roomie4rent ......There was a time when anything could be in the dark, beyond the light of the fire. Gods & monsters were real then. The gods were imagined the monsters, not so much.
cholrus69 The "people" I was referring to are of the non-religious variety. I'm trying to convey to them that dissuading the devout is a largely hopeless endeavor.
Can't believe that woman on the right actually believes in Noah :D Come on! How can you believe someone turns 900? If I told her today that I knew someone who was 900 years old, she would say I am crazy. Grownups believing in children stories....comedy!
Asking an ATHEIST (someone who doesn't believe in the existence of a God) "have you ever just tried talking to God?" Wow *slow claps* logic of religious people
Sherri: "In believing in God, you have to suspend a lot of logic in believing in God." she has no idea she just summed up all of religion and proved Bill's point in one irrational sentence hahahaha
Did you speak to God???? uurrmmmm I think he only speaks to prophets through caves and burning bushes doesn't he? Since when does God reply to anything...
I grew up like Bill in a catholic house and I never questioned any of it till in my 20's when I realized that it was all 'man made'. I have nothing against Christians or any other religion, as long as they don't try and impose their beliefs on me, through things like public policy and legislation.
+Tariq Khan I have faith that a higher power told me that burning this house down is the right thing to do, and that if I fail in my actions I will be reduced to a mound of salt. I swear officer, I was in fear for my life. My wife was murdered by a killer and I will spend half her life insurance payout as a reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction.
Looking back I realize that I was an atheist long before I admitted it. Only recently have I been comfortable telling others that I don't believe in magical sky daddies, talking snakes etc.
Same here. When I originally rejected religion, I still felt pressured to claim that I was "spiritual" and still believed in some sort of "god". But I was lying. I was an atheist all along.
I'm going to school and learning about Evolution and Bill Maher is 100% correct. I mean believe whatever you want but if people want to know where they come from study evolution because its the Truth.
Good to see someone new taking an interest in evolution. The funny thing is that evolutionary theory is actually quite simple in reality. It makes sense and an ounce of logic is all that is required to understand the mechanisms proposed.
+Mr Gaudy Disagree. The evolutionary theory is not so simple, as it doesn't supply evidence. What we see as evolution can be seen as the constant mutations a living creature goes through, and how those small difference over time (unplanned) are seen later as "the correct choice" because the unfortunate mutants simply died. It's more like, roll the dice, and then we see the survival of whoever got lucky. Scientists still have no idea about a lot of basic questions. Check out Nye VS Ham? or some shit.. I think his name was Ham. 2 n half hour debate, was nice.
PDC1987 The original theory of evolution was disproven by evidence (Darwin was wrong, but he got the ball rolling in the right direction). There are multiple theories of evolution that deal with multiple aspects of evolutionary theory. Hypothesis are guesses. Facts are true. When facts support a hypothesis it becomes a theory, until disproven and replaced. Theory of evolution itself evolves. I perfectly understand that theories themselves do not supply evidence, they are based upon evidence, and since I can't actually see what my original reply was too without going to the full youtube video page, I'll just leave a nice reply. Fuck you for being a rude cunt. Have a nice day.
09:15 bill maher's face reaction because of the audience applauding to the women statement that he should ask god of what he thinks... lololol... sorry for my english..
I agree with woopie that allowing diverse, beliefs, religions, mythologies is fine as long as it doesn't affect non-consenting ppl. I love that the strong believers made this short conversation very interesting. And Joy Behar is loving it. and I love how it just explodes into yelling and fades out at the end. Great clip.
I love Bill Maher. That one line he said was absolutely brilliant, "religion is just an opinion." Because at the end of the day that's what it is. Religion is subjective. We're all entitled to our own beliefs, no matter how irrational or illogical they may be to others.
Why would he ask 'god' a question? If he got an answer next thing he'd be on medication for voices in his head. Why can't people be honest about religion? I mean, really honest. Truth is, they are really afraid of what others would think of them not believing.
he said that he didn't edit out the people, those were the people he crossed. However people of faith will truly believe in what they want, its the point he's trying to make.
"if i didn't believe in God, i would want my doctor, lawyer, and banker to do so"! G.K. Chesterton that's more astute than 99% of what little billy maher babbles!
Notice how they collectively gang up and shout him down every time he begins to set up a meaningful argument. This show is not a forum for intelligent discussion, its just a place for these women to feel self righteous and verbally overwhelm and beat down anyone with different views.
Christians and Muslims both believe in a lot of the same stories, Virgin Mary (mariam) had a baby named Jesus(isa) they both believe in Noah's ark. They also both love Jesus but Muslims many other prophet as well (Adam,Abraham,Muhammad,Moses etc.)
Surely to perceive a voice not your own in your mind, to what would equate to an auditory hallucination if you ask ANY DOCTOR would surely be a psychotic episode and surely be the onset of schizophrenia?
Why does anyone go on that show those rude screechy women always talking over each other and their guest it's ridicules . Cannot help liking Bill Maher tho' The desire for fame at any cost .....all ego !.
There was once a test done where a doctor told his patients (on pain-killer) that the hospital was running low on pain-killer and for a short time, they would lower their dose. The doctor then recorded their "pain level" on a scale of 1 to 10, before, and after lowering the dose. Nearly all of the patients claimed their pain had increased after lowering their dose, but for the whole time, the doctor had never lowered the dose.
Bill Maher is so logical and has so much common sense those blinded by religion can't see that, it's funny how when some one hears a voice they are crazy, but when the "voice" is God it's acceptable
Yes, when you're a child you do believe what you are told because your parents are your guides as well as being your authority on everything including religion and morality. At that young age you have not developed your discernment abilities (i.e. your b.s. detector). But when you grow up (i.e. gain and take on board your own experiences) it appears that some people develop their critical faculties and some don't. The issue is wider than religion. It is about tooling oneself to handle life.
I could definitely agree with that. There are a LOT of dangers in believing something just because someone else says so. "Might just be my opinion" But I also find it hilarious that if you ask fanatics if that's dangerous and give them a scenario not about the bible, and they totally agree that it's dangerous, but they don't see the correlation when the subject goes back to the bible. I used to be that way too. But the fear is now gone. :)
@jbclark61 I believed he healed me, because I was trusting in his promise, and backed it up by helping others, and also knowing that I am healed by his stripes. I used many different scriptures against the evil spirits that were against me, and most of all I always forgive others no matter what they do or say to me and always will. I believe that is the only reason I am still here, because I always forgive, and God promised he would forgive me as I forgive others!
5:16 in the video. the blonde girl says "why go blindly into something, but i think faith is important" these two concepts contradict each other. Faith: confidence in that which is not, or cannot be proven. a firmly held belief with no basis in fact. blindly accepting a premise with no tangible backing. If you have faith, then you have no proof and are acting blindly.
@Paxx23 Thanks for sharing this. I think that experiments shows how much more important is education than instincts in human beings. It must be best to our survival to be that way, I guess. Nonetheless, it makes me think how much weaker (both physically and psychically) is the human infant compared to the other species infants.
Well, without commenting on faith, I can tell that asking a guy that just made a movie titled "Religulous" if HE asked God about it sounds really arrogant and dumb. As if that would have helped Bill get a better perspective on the topic to try to muster some faith. Not her finest hour, I must say.
@misterbarbister I agree, somewhat. I think because the US is such a religious country he gets it thrown in the face every second, and that can irritate at some point. But I also think he is so 'enthusiastic' about it because he wants people to step out that pit and start thinking for themselves
@9:07 she ask Bill if he's ever just talked to god. His reaction is priceless. First he's thinking this bitch is nuts. Then the audience cheers loudly and his eyes get wider and he's thinking, shit, there are a lot of crazy MOFs here today.
"To believe in God you have to suspend a lot of logic and believe in God. Have you ever asked God what he thinks?" "Unfortunately I have not suspended my use of logic, so I currently do not believe that I can ask a magical man in the sky what he thinks."
I'm religious, but I've actually grown to like Bill Maher. He has good reasons for what he belives, and he just says his thoughts without trying to change it around because people will get offended or whatever. At least there's no BS with him.
Sherry is funny, when she asks bill maher " why don't you speak to god and ask him yourself" and the look bill gives, as this is the point surely, if he speaks to god all he is really doing is speaking to himself LMFAO
9:16 The look of surprise on his face. Justifiable. Completely understandable and appropriate. This is a rational, intelligent man being asked whether he asks god what his opinion on belief is.
If she wouldve asked me if I ever had a conversation with god I would've said: Yeah and while I was at it I asked Santa Claus for a PlayStation.....haven't received a reply from either of the two...
@tuttt99 It is not a waste of time to listen to someone you don't necessarily agree with. If you only listen to people you agree with you'll never learn anything or challenge yourself.
