UPDATE for 12/3/18 **Our guinea pig cages in the video were a temporary corner set up since we had just moved from Nebraska to Texas. Don't freak out on me, I LOVE my guinea pigs SO much and they have grid cages now that we are settled in. I will post a video on my family pet channel @ Texas Unicorns soon!
This video WELCOMES all of my birdie & animal LOVERS to join me in my NEW Texas Bird Sunroom. The loveyourparrot flock did AMAZING on our 15 hour drive to Texas and are adjusting very well. I have a lot of exciting plans ahead for the bird room and am researching ideas for a safe outside parrot play area. I have been an aviculturist & avian educator for 25 years and enjoy what I do. We live on 2 acres with beautiful trees and the neighbors have farm animals all around us. It is pure HEAVEN!! I'm pretty sure I will be the "BIRD GIRL" for Farmersville, Texas and very eager to teach more about parrots! It is a lot of work to feed, clean, train, and have enrichment with the birds BUT we love it! A TRUE LABOR of LOVE.

It is a daily job of love, that's for sure! My children are following my foot steps with animal care and career opportunities working with birds so they help out a lot too. It can be very loud at times, each day is different depending on the weather, meal time, & breeding seasons. I am OCD with cleaning so that helps everyone out ha ha!

We LOVE it! I am excited to have my birds outside longer during the year for playtime. In my old state of NE, I had to have them in 6 months out of the year, that will be reduce to only about 2 months they need to stay in here in Texas. It helps with bird cage cleaning too, I sun dry my cages after power washing them.

I love your new bird room. I just set one up in my house too. I have a blue crowned conure a black-capped conure and a Green-Cheek yellow sided conure. I also have guinea pigs LOL. Just a beautiful and fun looking room! I’m working on getting my lovebird to drink out of a water bottle and just wondered how you went about training them?

It was pretty easy. I put the water bottle on the cage and when I would put the bowl of water in, I would say the word water and then tap on the water bottle ball piece at the same time. Birds typically will figure out very quickly how to use a water bottle but I used the words water to associate with the water bottle and showed them by tapping water out of it. I always recommend using both a bowl and bottle until your bird is visibly drinking from the bottle. You can always use both, I use water bottles for the smaller birds because I have so many to care for and it keeps it clean. Some have been rescued and others I have had since a baby. We just moved to Texas and everyone has chickens, donkeys, horses, pigs, and cattle around us! I would suggest target/clicker training if your birds are not tame where you can ask them to step up to put them back in the cage. You can also put their favorite treat inside the food bowl and wait to see if they go in to retrieve the treat. What kind are they? Check out Parrot Tricks Channel to learn how to start the training. Quick question, do you use bandaid tape for your birds perches? And is all bandaid tape safe, or what brand do you use/recommend?

Mel Cook I use equine wrapping tape for my perches. It serves as extra support/comfort and is safe as long as your bird is not eating it. Mine do pick at it like a toy but do not consume any. Thanks for watching!!

Parrot Lover I take my cages outside and power wash them. I remove the dividers and clean around that area, then dry with a cloth. I make sure to clean with direct sun as that helps dry as well.

hi i feed my 3 birds harrissons can i feed the same u have i do feed themsame u have sometimes but i have a pionus who grew up on harrissons n if theres none he goes crazy n i have to order fast lol so is ok to feed other pelets

Hey! I will be receiving a gala cockatoo this July! It is not trained or anything close to that. What should I do. This is my first bird and I’m nervous. I know a lot about parrots and care I just don’t know if I’m ready for this big of a training commitment. I know what I’m doing with training parrots because my neighbors got a sun conure born in November 2017 and I trained it. What should I do for such a big bird...

Please share with me how you bring their weight up? Rio eats ZuPreem Pellets (natural), California blend mini Pellets and a few Lafeber nutra berries. I don't have a feeding time. I keep his Pellets in his cage at all times.

Hi Sandy! I give my birds cooked Quinoa 5 days a week. It is a high protein super-food and extremely nutritional. Quinoa is also easy to make and store in the freezer so you can prepare a batch and put in ice cubes trays to pop one out to use daily. I also offer a fresh banana chunk everyday. I give them many other fresh fruits and veggies but the quinoa and banana are a staple to their diet for keeping proper weight on. I use a separate bowl for the fresh foods and feed them mid-day when they are hungry. Thanks for watching and I hope this helped you! We have many exciting videos to come on parrot diet and health!!

all of those birds are so pretty!! the colors and decor are amazing, they look so content and happy. since i assume you know a lot about birds(and perhaps parakeets if im lucky), is it ok if i asked for a few tips? later on, in a few years time, i plan to live on my own with my dog while attending college. the college life is demanding and i know two pets at the same time sound pretty difficult, but should i get a bird while keeping my dog nearby? or would it make it uncomfortable and too frightened? i would never want to put such an amazing little creature through any fears, but i really have been interested in getting a parakeet for a while now. if i did a lot of research and hopefully found a big enough place to stay, would it be a good choice to get one?

Hello friend! Yes, you can get a birdie along with having a dog as long as the dog is supervised and not near the bird. I have TWO dogs and they have been raised with birds BUT my boxer will naturally want to play with a bird if it landed on the floor. SO, I supervise and keep my bird away from my dogs when they are out playing. Anything can be done if you educate yourself which it sounds like you have! Think carefully about your long term decision with a bird, they live along time and you don't want to re-home your baby if life gets in the way. If you are a total bird LOVER and very passionate about birds, make sure your commitment is forever, no matter what! You ROCK!!!

That is hard one. They are all my Fav!!! I have different bonds and relationships with each one. Ruby, Ducky, Carrot, Taco, Reishi, Axel, Tawny, & Snooky are always wanting daily interactions with them. I have 4 kids who have their birds and care for them each day so all the birds get playtime. Boo is my husbands bird and Cairo loves everyone but not so much me. I love them all! Tawny & Snooky were not in the video since we adopted her after the bird tour vid. I love them all!!!

Which cage is your favorite for a budgie?

Most Prevue cages are good. Amazon has great prices and pictures of cages with reviews. I don't recommend anything with a dome or triangle top. A good tall yet wide cage with 1/2 bar spacing. Check out my newer video on setting up new cages. The flight cages I ordered are good for many sized birds.

I will have some new vids on these species in the Fall. I love all of them. Senegals are avid chewers and need a lot of enrichment to keep them busy. Amazons will need more space and can be loud and hormonal. IRN if not tame, it will take patience and more time than some other birds due to IRN having skittish behavior. If you look on the Texas Parrot Facebook groups, there should be links to adoptions and bird fairs. Most are in Fort Worth or South Texas near Austin and such.

Can sun conures be in an apartment?

I don't recommend a sun conure in an apartment. It is a personal choice but I find it is stressful for the owners because they worry about their neighbors getting upset. It isn't fair to the bird either if the owner is scolding them for making a natural sun conure squawk. They are very loud at times depending on the personality of the bird. It is a natural sound that they make. Sun Conures can have the best of everything and they will still make their screech because that is how they sound.

Do you or have you ever owned a cockatoo? I'm planning on adopting a rescue named Rocky, and I want some advice from a clearly experienced bird owner to a VERY new bird owner. I know, I know, a cockatoo is a terrible first bird, but I've spent 6 months preparing and researching, I've been volunteered at a bird rescue for a while now, and I've just fell so deeply I love with Rocky. All the other people at the shelter say he is a mean bird, how he lunges at them all the time. But I've spent a lot of time with him and he'll let me pet him and he'll try to step up, but he hasn't quite learned how to keep his balance. He only lunged at me ONCE, and he didn't mean any harm because he hardly even bit me and there was no bruise or anything. Sorry, rambling a bit. Anywho, advice for a first large bird owner?

KittiKast yes, I had an Umbrella Cockatoo named Emma. She has since passed away. I loved her dearly, she was a handful and difficult with my young children at the time. I am proud of you for your avian volunteer work and I think you will make a good decision for yourself about adopting the cockatoo. Just remember that some parrots can have a good life and give you happiness without being completely tame. Good luck and keep me updated!! 💕

Rocky will be VERY lucky to have you as his forever mama. Parrot communication signs and being aware of his daily moods along with knowledge of when natural breeding hormones occur throughout the calendar year will be crucial for you to learn as well. Owning a larger parrot especially one that you may not know the history of its age, past experiences, and habits requires daily attention on the owners part as parrot bites can be very dangerous. I don't think you said what kind of cockatoo Rocky is. I would love to see you post updates through your channel or Instagram. This would be a great way for you to keep track of your journey with him.
