Nicely said. Also, jazz players practice improvising changes to death. That's why everything he plays here fits so perfectly on each chord. He's also a gypsy player, so he's used to shredding a lot on acoustic. He sees the music in a completely different way than most metal guitarists do because of his gypsy/jazz background.

Naaa! Bireli is the best, for all times. Even the son of Django said : the difference between Birelli and Django Reinhardt is that Birelli has 10 fingers for playing"....Do you understand what he wanted to say?(Django had a fire accident and lost 2 fingers)

@Neogothicmetal666 "He´s not better than Yngwie, but he´s very awesome" In this style of music, it's debatable, but I'm impressed, as well as surprised that Birelli did what he just did. He could certainly hold his own against Malmsteen in terms of pure speed and technique in the Metal genre of playing. However, Malmsteen hardly comes close to Birelli when it comes to Jazz, so therefore, Birelli is no doubt the superior and more versatile player overall...

***** Not if they practiced because metal is pretty much straight line melody, sequential patterns, and scales. Anyone can learn how to play it in time. I've seen more metal and rock players struggle with jazz because the phrasing and timing is not linear, or predictable. Bluegrass, like metal, is also lightning fast and highly technical, but it is still simple straight line melody - if you stick with it you'll get it down. You just have to practice a couple of hours a day.
@Scrumdilliisious
@Scrumdilliisious 10 лет назад
tinian33 Anyone can play jazz. Anyone can play metal. Not many can play both convincingly. Being a great metal guitarist is more akin to a classical style. But jazz is improv. But most jazz guitarists copy styles of others, or play the same ole songs that have been played for over half a century, so it is nothing new. Write great songs in any style of music is more difficult than jazz or metal playing.
@alphacentauri8083
@alphacentauri8083 10 лет назад
Jim Richman I don't agree that anyone can play jazz "well" since a lot of it is more art than science. I studied Baroque, some classical, Villa Lobos, etc., on the guitar, and since most of the work were "set pieces" it was not that hard as long as you practiced. To get melodic lines in jazz just right as it pertains to the big picture in a song was a different animal - no real science behind it but a lot interpretation based on stuff you have practiced.. I do agree that composition and creating new catchy music is the hardest of them all.
@alphacentauri8083
@alphacentauri8083 10 лет назад
Jim Richman True....it's all relative. And I have yet to meet any elite guitarist who can play Baroque "guitar" on a Hawaiian ukulele like the late John King who I studied with: watch?v=WAgMqbsKhgw

@NikTheFix Agree with the clean technique thing, early Yngwie was inhumanly clean and fast.However after 20 years of guitar playing having studied metal,classical guitar and jazz, i find that the ability to play over changes is the ultimate musical skill.

You guys need to listen to Frank Gambale and then come back here - that means the disappointed Bireli fans and the shredder aplogist. Bireli did not go all in on this kind of music, did he? This was more of an experimental period when he was trying to escape the Django typecast. Frank's brilliant in one or two styles, but as a musician there are not many like Bireli.

It seems a lot of people here don't get it.. malmsteen plays classical metal, he has his own style and he's amazing yeah ( big fan here)..but bireli started to play gypsy jazz when he was young, and then played EVERY STYLE he could with differents artists, and he is just amazing in all of them... thats the difference. Bireli doesn't play in the same yard than 99.99% of the guitarists. If you don't understand me , just try to check all malmsteens videos on internet, then bireli's. You'll realize.

@basausi
@basausi 11 лет назад
IMHO, they all tried to prove their cross-over ability but paying close attention, metal guitarists could produce jazz-like sound but failed to produce the depth and very soul of jazz and jazz guitarists could mimic Metal music but there's a void of adrenaline rush in the phrasing no matter how fast they can articulate. Technique is not the only thing that makes the music genre but also is expression. Peace :)
@cgDominic
@cgDominic 11 лет назад
I am familiar Andy James of course, he's a respected and a great metal guitarist, metal shred to be more specific, precise technique, flawless execution, great straight ahead metal phrasing. But in rock/ metal I personally like guys with more fusion tendencies, outside lines are badass ie: Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe, Alan Holdsworth
@MrFilipeno
@MrFilipeno 12 лет назад
Guys, bireli is good, but in his own genre. In metal, yngwie or other neoclassical shredders such as loomis are another league, this is just jazz played with distortion :) And dont compare guitarists, music is art not competition

Bireli is a legend but your call that he puts to shame all the electric shred and fusion players, in this clip at least, is a big one. I don't think I'd have the grounds to state such a thing. I think you need to give Yngwie and players like Vinnie Moore their due as they've certainly earned the kudos for their stylistic and technical prowess.
