What an X-tra musician !!!I love Bireli!!! He had to play the same year in july in La Seyne sur Mer (France); and I played this evening with my band on a little scène near the big one, just one hour before this same band. Chick Corea Acoustic Trio played just after Bireli'Band. It's was a magical night, and we talk with Bireli a long moment at the end of the night.
What a funtastic way to start my sunday morning!😇 ... they are awesome!💗 ... what a high level performing music in a relatively natural way ... great talents and great feeling ... sometimes you can feel the real core of music🎶 ... THANKS for showing👍 ... CHEERS to the band and Bireli!🍺🍺🍺
@@Fretlessness The title is wrong and this performance was actually 1991, so Jaco was already long since gone. Bireli is also using a 1990 Ovation Collectors edition so definitely not 1987.
@@richardfaucheraux4873 Thank you the video and for that quote. I think Bireli transmits such a sense of freedom and power in his playing. He is as pure an improviser as I have ever seen. If I were to use one word to describe his playing, I would say "freedom". But there is so much more. Yes, he is playing in the beyond, where very few musicians have ever tread, regardless of the instrument.
@@pjjmsn, sadly, if born in France, Bireli is not very well known in his own country., only real connoisseurs have heard of him. No one is a prophet in his own country !
@@richardfaucheraux4873 I didn't know that he was not well known in France, that is sad. He is my favorite jazz guitar player ever! I was very fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time to have seen him for 4 nights in New York City at a club called Fat Tuesdays in 1984, (3 years before this video) I believe in February. I was there to see Larry Coryell who I was a fan of, and who turned out to be playing acoustic guitar duets with Vic Juris, who I had not heard of at the time. Well Bireli opened up for them with Jan Jankje on bass and a rythum guitarist, who might have been Bireli's brother. I found out later that that was the first time Bireli had ever come to the USA. Each night he played a solo as well which he entitled "Rue de Pierre" (I absolutely love his solo guitar playing!!! - it was one of my favorite parts of the show) and would play one or 2 duets with Larry, one of which was always Wave, by Jobim. The first night he played a gypsy style acoustic guitar. However the 2nd night a guy from Ovation guitars came and gave him an Ovation (maybe the one in this video) and he played that for the rest of the week. Larry and Vic were also playing Ovations. It was a very small club so it was intimate. Another memory from those nights was that every night Les Paul was there sitting at the bar, which was only about 15 feet from the stage. He said he was very impressed with Bireli! That was one of the most magical weeks of my life!!! In those days you could show up and get a table right in front. Those were different times. This video brings back those memories, as he looked similar. He had long hair like here, maybe more of it, and was a little thinner. He absolutely blew my mind!!! I was there to see Larry, who played great at the time, but Bireli was mind blowing, especially in the duets with larry and the solo guitar pieces. That was the first time I had been exposed to Gypsy style guitar with Bireli's trio, so I didn't really understand or appreciate it at the time as much as I do now. But when he played the duets with Larry and Rue de Pierre solo, I was taken to the beyond.
@@pjjmsn Thank you for taking time to write these lines and share your experiences with this amazing musician. I have first heard about Gypsy style music when I was a kid from my Mother who is still alive in her 93rd year. She had the chance to see Django the Master along with Stephane Grapelli and I believe it was a transcendent experience because she still talks about it with emphasis.
Yes he a great guitarist. Yeah👏 Love his electric feeling. My first concert (with my mother🌹was the fan of him )was in Germany,Kammgarn with Alan Nau (drums).
Went to see him in Paris a few years ago. Had an amazing sax player with him and a phenomenal double bass guy. Half way through, Birelli picks up a fretless bass and plays a bunch of Jaco style shit on it. Is there anything the guy can't do?! 😊
Wow never heard this style of bireli .. iam so happy that i found this video .. this pure music 🎶 🔥.. the whole band is just unbelievably good .. thanx so much for uploading this treasure 🙏 ❤
i saw him a few years before as a shy little boy, same age as me, in frankfurt greatly playing straight jazz manouche. he really made the big leap from it very early very fast as you can see here without ever leaving his roots. i always liked him, though i took a whole other route musicwise.

Bottom line was my favorite hangout for performances. Unfortunately it's not existing anymore. Never liked sound of Ovation guitar, but definitely not in the case of this video...
How did he get an American accent???? I met him in Strasbourg and spoke to him in French and didn’t know that he spoke English. He is an absolute genius of course.
Vai? Holdsworth? Satriani? Govan? etc. No. None of them are world renown gypsy guitar players, or can play great Bebop, or play Bass like Jaco, or sing like Sinatra. Bireli can! And yes, he can really shred too! What haven't more people heard of him???
Bireli is a true master! Allan Holdsworth actually could sing very good and also played the violin very well. Also you will find more bebop related lines in his playing as one would think. But, he also created a whole new language on the guitar. Allan is a true innovator!
Il le coince certainement contre une phalange d'un doigt plié (en gros grâce la pulpe du doigt). Ce qui est fort, c'est qu'il le garde comme ça au moins 2 minutes.
always the same thing when a hear bireli , his technical stuff are very high but i feel nothing ! at all ! strange thing , this guy has no charisma lol amazing !
I do agree that his 80s sound is highly technical but sometimes might lack emotion. Check out a video of him playing a solo jam in Chez Fernand '96. Also, his concert in Paris from 2004 is absolutely amazing.
@@Fretboard_Frenzy Years ago I was trading tapes and VHS with a japanese friend. Once he sent me a Radiators' video I asked him and he filled up the empty space with Birelli Lagrene ... this was a surprise !
