In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu its a given that you will sooner or later end up on you on the bottom. In my opinion being on the bottom doesn't mean you have to be on your back.In this video I teach you how not only to stay off your back but to also avoid getting gripe in the guillotine gripe.
By avoid the guillotine and staying of you back you opponent is not only limited in his option but he also cannot rest his weight on you. Never allowing the top man to rest his weight on you is crucial since it will cause you to get fatigue.
Be sure to learn this move well and your Half Guard will be feared by many.

I subscribe to a lot of bjj guys and I find myself using stuff from your videos most often/with the most success (stripping the kimura grip/side control and N/S escape/finishing the armbar/etc) so please keep them coming.

Firas, you mentioned the sweep during the head grab/strong neck position. I would like to see other sweeps from half guard. Possibly a choose your own position video series/playlist? that would be fantastic. Great video as always.

Firas Zahabi is awesome, period! You can tell he's a smart guy. But I bet he had to convince his family that he wanted to work with martial arts. "Why don't you go become a doctor or an engineer my son!!??" Trust me I know...

This is my favorite triangle set-up. I loved seeing Joe Lauzon hit it on Jamie Varner in the UFC. I've never kicked the knee out though. It looks like an awesome detail, that I can't wait to try. Thanks!

BrySnave The Powderkeg!! I loved that Lauzon finish as well. If you go back and look at the Lauzon finish you’ll note 2 important differences from Firas’ vudeo, (1) Lauzon hit this as transition Froma Mounted attack not from the Half Guard or any Bottom position, (2) Lauzon had an Overhook that he kept from a Butterfly Sweep not an Underhook. Takeaway from the Lauzon fight is that if the Top player in Half Guard is able to free his leg in the Dogfight he has the same Triangle finish that the Bottom player has.

For pure grappling, if they put the whizzer in, I underhook their leg and sweep. If they keep the whizzer, they get swept. If they base out, they can't choke me. For MMA I guess they can elbow my head with their non-posting arm, but should be fairly safe if you're active with sweep attempts. I love half guard and triangles, though, so now I have one that leads to the other, so excellent video, thanks!

Awesome stuff, I was wondering if the same movement can be applied to a standing opponent as opposed to a kneeling one? Does the change in level change the whole dynamics altogether (thus a different approach is needed)?

Cool variation. How do you feel about Lucas Leite style half guard sweeps for mma? Seems very similar and I love them in NoGi for opponents who like passing knees on the ground. Just curious about how well they work against strong wrestlers while striking

Hey Firas - i go to 10th planet and they like to play deep half a lot and i don't for the reasons you mention. However, i tired this move and was getting caught in the guillotine (granted it was my first time trying it live so i would expect it would take time to master) is this because i need to time the base kick out better so they post? Also can i do this from a wizzer instead of holding the hip as you demonstrate here? Thanks so much for all your content i really enjoy it and it has helped my game a lot!

Hey Coach great video! One question I have is when you transition from half guard off the opponent's hip to the triangle, should you transition the opponent's arm inside the triangle to the other side of your body/ across their throat to complete the choke or does it matter? We are generally taught in my school to complete triangles that way but I would like to hear your take on it. Thank you for providing the awesome videos!

Great one. Makes me think of Joe Lauzon vs Jamie Varner. The way Joe set that triangle up was beautiful. The whole fight was, actually. Merci Firas, remet un petit bonjour à Abdel M. :)

+Tristar Gym Thanks very much. Another question for you if I may. Is there a book or some reading material on the theory behind the different BJJ positions? For example, I have been doing BJJ for about a year and a half fairly consistently, and just happened to watch a video explaining that in order to attack from the bottom guard, you need to have the opponents posture broken and his head lower on your abdomen. I feel in the gym sometimes, instructors forget to teach the BASIC-basic theory behind what we are doing and why.
@joehill4945
@joehill4945 8 лет назад
My point in the above wall of text was that there are so many little pieces of theory (like breaking posture) that Instructors assume we know that we may not. I feel sometimes the rock-bottom basics are neglected. I have trained at several clubs and this seems to be a common denominator.

Hi Firas, great work, always a fan. Do you not have also an omoplata there?
@Rob_Kankerboef
@Rob_Kankerboef 8 лет назад
+Darío Rivas Think so, you just need to turn a little further and you would need to switch the position of your arm (the left arm in the video) because if it winds up above the leg that locks the shoulder your opponent can roll out of the submission

Hello Firas, thank you for sharing you knowledge with all of us. While stiffening your neck up high to counter the reaching arm seems like a good defence, can it expose your head and chin for elbows strike?
@CoachZahabi
@CoachZahabi 8 лет назад
+francis rouse yes but I won't stay there long enough for him to strike me. When demonstrating it I will hug out there just to demo but in a real fight I would only be transitioning while not allowed my partner to base. No base no strikes.

Hey coach, COACH coach, I get caught in guillotine every time i attempt the Double leg takedown in wrestling sparring (it's easier if i set it up with a punch), Can you please explain how to avoid that and i'm 6'2" so does that affect the percentage of getting caught in guillotine?? Thanks alot coach
@RejectKing
@RejectKing 8 лет назад
+mohamed soliman Hope you don't mind if I throw my 2 cents in here. The principles shown in this video also apply to preventing a guillotine from other positions. Always keep the head up. When it comes to a double leg, I see a lot of guys coming in perpendicular to their opponents. This is a mistake. You should be almost parallel top your opponent. Your face should be looking towards the rear of your opponent, not the floor. If you're turning the corner, your ear should push like you were trying to hold a phone with no hands. If you're lifting your opponent, your base should go directly below his. At no point should your face be parallel with the floor.

Would it be a good idea to go for an omoplata instead of triangle`?
@coreycollins5187
@coreycollins5187 8 лет назад
The triangle it much higher percentage in MMA, omoplata's are usually only used to sweep as its difficult to pull off with a slippery opponent

This is Steve from www.bjjcollective.com. I think I also sent you my street fight video a while back. Anyways, great video. This topic has actually been on my mind a lot lately. There's a guy I did no gi with who was a monster at guillotines and I basically stopped using the underhook half guard just because he'd do exactly this.
