Preventing the Guard pass is the most important aspect of Jiu-Jitsu. The position is called Guard for the very purpose that the Guard position is what protect the bottom fighter from being attacked. Loose the Guard and you will not only be vulnerable to attacks but you will also start to get tired, once tired your technique will start to suffer.
Be sure to train your Guard preventions above all. Having a difficult Guard to pass will allow you to relax and have the confidence to attack you opponent. The harder you Guard is to pass the more you can open up and take chance.
Be sure to work this sequence it is a very power recipe for Guard retention.

What I enjoy most is that you not only talk about specific techniques, there are also underlying themes that you allude to. Much appreciated.

Segundo Paradigma All BJJ is designed to fight a bigger stronger opponent. I will definitely touch on this topic but make sure to note that this is a founding principle for all techniques.

Awesome video Coach. I have a permanent spinal injury which makes inverting/getting stacked difficult and hence guard passing for the opponent easy. I've used the straight arm defence to great effect and will now go for the collar drag too, turning defence into offence. Thanks again. Oos

Bit late to the party but I still hope you will answer my question. Is this maintaining-Guard also viable outside of Jiu Jitsu? So street self-defense kinda situations? Because it seems to me (total noob) that when you grab with an outstretched arm like that, it is really easy to overextend that elbow if he uses both hands, right? Or can you counter quickly enough so that it basically becomes a trap?
@brianlam9429
@brianlam9429 7 лет назад
I think the technical getup is good, especially if you have more reach than him to keep distance. The other techniques are probably too fancy.

Hi coach! This video has been gold for me.... please could you film a second part in the gi showing how you go from the base position into your butterfly sweeps and submissions as it's the transitions into offence where I seem to run into problems when I get passed! Thanks!
