There is!!! I'm always looking into all my native peoples history, both African and in the Americas! I searched up something about indigenous American DNA testing and they are trying to build up a base from existing indigenous tribes today. They still need help collecting the basis of their study but please look into it! 23andme and other testing that give you broad spectrums are not good for indigenous peoples to use bc they will keep you DNA. But I hope you can find out more about your ancestors and yourself. Also praying to your ancestors for guidance and help never hurt anyone! They are always with us in spirit and always listening!

it's so sad and horrible that a lot of black people can't know about their tribe/clan/cultural/ethnical background. :( i'm indonesian and i absolutely cannot imagine my life without knowing my clan, my tribe, my ethnical background from my mother's side and my father's side, and their culture. it's part of who i am and it's so sad to see a lot of black people not having the privilege to know theirs.... being stripped away from your heritage is so so so saddening!!! my country was colonized too and we had a large portion of our culture cut off by the colonizers as well and it's horrible. to all my black brothers and sisters i pray that you guys can find out about your ancestors, tribes, clans, and cultures. 💖

Tears are coming to my eyes reading the comments from those that are still living in Africa or just came here to America recently. To say the words that "We in Africa love you - Africa will always love you" breaks my heart. Because they understand that we were kidnapped. We were stolen and abused against our will. It is the same feeling anyone would have if they found out one of their family members has gone missing - no where to be found. To understand that we were made to forget our heritage, culture and language. Thank you for the words and feelings. This video is appreciated.

Even though Black people in the Americas with our mixed ancestries may not have social ties to other continents, we have ethnic groups and cultures of our own. I may not know exactly where all of my ancestors came from (which is standard for anyone with a family that has migrated or immigrated) but I know where I came from. I feel incredibly proud to be from the Americas, to be from the US specifically and to be a part of a rich legacy. Black Americans have such a huge global influence for such a small ethnic group. The whole world sings our music, dances our dances and looks up to our athletes.

@Litcott 5 лет назад
White people really take it for granted that we know our ancestry and/or can easily research it. I know where my ancestors lived, what languages they spoke, what religions they followed, etc. I have the privilege of speaking English when I AM English. I know a lot of white Americans scoff at the notion that knowing where you come from is important, considering themselves culturally American and nothing more, but the history of your people influences you today in ways you aren't even aware of. People often try to downplay the transatlantic slave trade by falsely comparing it to slavery that's occurred in the Middle East and ancient Rome, as if it's something every culture has dabbled in at one time or another, but most slavery systems didn't involve forced assimilation via bans on languages, religions, cultural practices, family groups, etc. Slaves in ancient Rome could continue speaking their native languages and worshiping their own gods, and their children weren't automatically slaves. The transatlantic slave trade was built upon intentional cultural genocide. Humans are easier to subdue when you strip them of their identities. It's one of the most tragic things that can happen to a people and it's shameful that the US never made reparations. We can never give back what we stole from the descendants of slaves but as a society we won't even admit the gravity of what we stole.

Knowing your ancestral history is empowering in my opinion. I didn't know they had this DNA test, that's really awesome that folks can do this and learn their family's histories beyond the nightmare of slavery. I'd love one like this for Native American tribes too. Native children were stolen from their tribes to be civilized and christianized. I knew my dad's family is native but my dna test showed I am also native on my mom's side and I'd love to know more.
@13579hee
@13579hee 5 лет назад
The sad reality is that test like this are misleading. They look at autosomal DNA and can only tell you about the DNA you carry. That means they do not look at all of your ancestors. And if they look at Y chromosomes they can only tell you about your father's father's father's father's father so many generations back and the same goes for looking at mitochondrial DNA only being able to show you your mother's mother's mother so many generations back. Given the forced migration of African people on the African continent to West Africa's Coast during the days of the transatlantic slave trade, it's virtually impossible to trace any modern-day African-American to one African tribe. And because modern-day Africa is a byproduct of its Colonial past, African Americans could not lay claim today in being descendants of any modern-day countries even if they wanted to. There was no country called Ghana or Nigeria or Senegal or the Democratic Republic of Congo or any other modern African nation when our ancestors lived on that continent

It really is a beautiful thing for descendants of enslaved Black Americans to trace their roots. I was recently at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and remember having the same feeling I got after watching this video. As a side note, it's nice how you mentioned that you hope for a Native American DNA test in the near future without commandeering the video. You got your point across without being disrespectful to Black people by hijacking the point of this video like many commenters here did. So many people are putting the onus on Black people to fix every race's/culture's problems. Whenever Black people get something or do something, some foolish POC is like "But why don't you help us instead?" like Black people don't already help other POC to get no help in return. I wish more of those people would be like you who want to work with Black people and not have Black people work for you. 💛

Hi! so I live in Kenya and as part of our education we learn about colonization around some parts of Africa and among different tribes specifically (obviously not all but among the three major groups the Nilotes, Cushites and the Bantu). There were some communities in Africa who were assimilated (i.e their colonizers tried to mix or integrate their culture with Africans) other tribes were offered gifts and even bribed is exchange for their people being sold into slavery while others were tricked into thinking their land and other possessions which were grabbed would be given back to them if they agreed to side with their colonizers. Basically not all African countries and/or tribes resisted it really really varied. Personally those are only examples from East and Central Africa

@@emmanuelabiola1871 I know. Thats why i said even if many slaves didn't originate from Kenya, they should feel free to call Kenya home. I already knew the backstory to the Atlantic slave trade which East Africa wasn't involved in. I already knew East Africa was involved in th Indian ocean trade, which only resulted in way fewer slaves in Middle East and India.

I'm an African-American with 98% West African DNA. I'm from Savannah, Georgia and most of us here has a high percentage of West African DNA from various West African countries. ❤

It hurts to only be to identify as “Black” don’t get me wrong but imagine if we african americans knew our true background. Seeing how proud people are to rep their flags I always feel i’m on the outside

Tribalism has its own problems too. In countries where there are mostly black people, tribalism can often replace racism (Thanks Colonialism). Like in a lot of African countries, identifying as black means nothing, 'cause we're all black, but we're not all the same tribe, so that takes precedence.

Black is just a general term of all the African Diaspora and due to the Europeans not caring nor keeping proper records and many Europeans destroying their familial ways of knowledge by slavery

Son Of Judah Absolam No blacks did not come from Israel, yes the Hebrews were a mixed group( Africans and Semitics), humans originate in East Africa, and a lot black people have diverse ancestry

As a first generation American who knows exactly where they come from, I find this incredibly beautiful. All black Americans deserve this kind of information about their ancestry should they have the desire to know. And shoutout to Ryann who ended up having common ancestry with the Mende people of Sierra Leone. Welcome brother lol
