A series of obscene phone calls start to plague the residents of the sorority and it becomes clear that a psychopath is homing in on the sisters with dubious intentions. And though the police try to trace the calls, they discover that nothing is as it seems during this Black Christmas. "Stuffed with extremely tense moments, chilling cinematography, amazing characters and long-lasting dread… [this] genuine classic is completely deserving of every bit of respect and admiration it's picked up over the last 40 years."

I found the phone calls the most disturbing part of this movie

Still holds up. The background sound while "Billy" is on the phone is genuinely unnerving.

In my opinion it's one of the best horror movie scene ever. So creppy, scary and emotional.

I hate how people say halloween was the 1st slasher film when this masterpiece pre dates it by 4 years, and the concept of using a holiday in horror may i add

Silent Night, Bloody Night from from 1972, 2 years prior to this film was a slasher but it is an obscure film. This was just one of the earliest successful ones.

I always thought the very first slasher film was either alfred Hitchcock's psycho or peeping tom from the 1960's.

I guess Halloween embodies better the definition of the "slasher" formula. Black Christmas feels more like an American Giallo.

@@FilmBuffBros You have a point, but while it looks a lot like a Slasher, it feels more like a Giallo. Couldn't we just agree that "Slasher" is an American subgenre who borrows heavily from the Giallo?

it’s in his moments of complete and total lucidity that he knows exactly what he’s doing and he knows the effect it has on you. and he wants you to know it.

First slasher in film history? No. We could go back to Peeping Tom, a colorful British piece from the 1960s, or even The Spiral Staircase from 1946 (a really effective b+w thriller, by the way). You could include And Then There Were None, from '45, based on an Agatha Christie story about a handful of people in a house being killed one by one. There was also Psycho in '60 ... and its many imitators-- like Dementia 13, Paranoiac, Homicidal, etc. The 70's and 80's was a slasher explosion time period, between the colorful giallos and the American holiday-themed films. But Black Christmas was not the first one.

olivia hussy is the actress answering the phone......,the obscene phone caller is actor nick mancuso According to director Bob Clark, there were three voices used for Billy's frightening phone calls, including actor Nick Mancuso, an unnamed actress, and himself. During a FanExpo panel in 2014 Nick Mancuso said that the actress was probably Ann Sweeny, though he was not entirely sure, as the film came out 40 years prior, and could not remember properly. In order to get the the proper creepy and raspy voice for Billy, actor Nick Mancuso had to stand on his head to compress the thorax in his neck.

The whole "the phone calls are coming from inside the house" storyline in this movie and the other stories and movies from the "olden days" I never got because they didn't have cell phones back then. Sooooo.... how could the killer be calling from inside the house? Presumably most houses only had one phone line back then.
@eduardo_corrochio
@eduardo_corrochio 8 месяцев назад
Some houses had a second line. It's not like that's impossible. Maybe a home has a business line. Suppose Billy enters the attic and discovers an old working phone that no one at that house even knew of ... come on, anything can happen in the world of fiction. At least one other thriller from this era, or what you call the "olden days" like it was the American pilgrim times, used this trope--- When a Stranger Calls (with Carol Kane, Colleen Dewhurst, et al.) had this phone situation too. But, yeah, the bulk of people had one phone line. In real life.
@freddycougar7156

It's explained in the movie. The setting is a sorority house and the house mother has her own line.

@@eduardo_corrochio But wouldn't a second phone line show up on the phone bill? Someone had to pay for it.
