"Telling strangers to do better while dead bolting their old closet full of skeletons" is such a perfect description of why I hate Twitter activism
@jadedheartsz
@jadedheartsz 2 года назад
eh some of it isn't bad, Twitter is good for shining a light on shitty behavior that otherwise gets ignored. But there are a few too many fake-progressives who have problematic views of their own who like to try and shame others to deflect from their own shortcomings. Rami Ismael comes to mind, with his stupid whining and blindly accusing the devs of the upcoming video game Six Days in Fallujah of being racist towards people like him(even though he himself wasn't actually born in the Middle East anywhere close to where the real life Fallujah battle happened, he was born in Egypt)and then Rami himself ended up being racist towards black people, leading to several black activists on Twitter rightfully calling him out for him being an insensitive bigoted hypocritical jackass and he locked down his Twitter for several days, and apparently that wasn't the first time Rami made an ass of himself online like that by being bigoted towards other races.

@@jprofio that's true, I remember when that Ghost in the Shell live-action movie came out and people were bitching about ScarJo getting cast in the lead and the vast majority of people I saw complaining about it were not minorities but other white people, which struck me as odd, I saw a few black folks complain about it but not many. Funny thing is Hollywood wasn't even to blame for this one, the Japanese company insisted on casting a white female lead because Japan worships white people.

Yeah, bc it's to use idpol to distract against the only thing that actually matters in politics: class. Unfortunately, Americans have long been brainwashed to ignored class and replace it with "minority groups" so you get spoiled little girlbosses who think they are the bravest pinnacle of "woke" morality for forcing a school to get rid of some old fuck's name while happily ignoring the fact their daddy's company gets rich using child slave labor (Fun fact, Nestle just got sued by its former child slaves and of course the supreme court sided with Nestle bc they agree that its actually good to force poor 8yos to slave for bread 18hrs a day in the equatorial heat. That's just smart business practices).

This film could never work unless it was entirely rewritten from the ground up and not called black christmas. At which point it means the movie could never work. I mean come on, magic statue cult that makes guys evil, but doesnt even follow its own logic by only having one guy stop being comically evil when its broken? If thats your plot most of the evil guys should have been turned back to normal after it was broken. Instead the movie was written to push an agenda where only the white guys stayed evil even tho it doesnt logically make sense with their mythology they created.
@merchantfan
@merchantfan 2 года назад
Yeah the supernatural element is actually insulting in context. So toxic masculinity is actually just a magic spell cast against guys' wishes? They can't play an active role in it at all? The writers are women- either they're really bad or this had some really awful studio suggestions. It would be more effective to (1) maybe have the leads be women in a more traditional sorority which totally still exist so they aren't already suspicious of these guys and (2) have the guys act friendly like in Promising Young Woman so it's actually a surprise if they're bad. Or have the token male hero actually be evil all along or something to show the "male feminists can be creeps too" thing.
@AngelofMusic04
@AngelofMusic04 2 года назад
This is legitimately one of the most infuriating remakes in recent history for exactly the reasons detailed in this review, all the more so because there actually IS a great idea in the film - a slasher movie from the perspective of a rape victim trying to reclaim her self worth - and this completely pisses that away by treating everyone as less than a one dimensional caricature (with the Kris character being the absolute worst and a sterling example of why some white writers really shouldn't try to write Black characters). Say what one will about them, but at least the remakes of "Suspiria" and "Child's Play" understood the core of what made the originals work while forging their own paths, especially "Suspiria". Imogene Poots deserved better, Cary Elwes is right where he deserves to be for Bobby Wobbly. Also, everyone at the end is going to jail for murder. Some "inspiring" ending that was.
@jadedheartsz
@jadedheartsz 2 года назад
worst part is this movie originally had an R-rating which would've at least helped somewhat, but it was trimmed down by the studio so more people could see it(like teens would even care considering many of them haven't even heard of the original Black Christmas or the 2006 one) and a fat lot of good that did considering it bombed. Not to mention this film comes off as judgmental against women who choose not to make their sexual assault cases public for their own reasons, I feel like April Wolfe has a major disdain for women like that after seeing this crapfest.
@briankaslewicz6130

You know what did this concept better? Death Proof. In the Texas half the radio girls who you'd think are airheads have more agency than they let on, getting shitfaced but telling the date rapey boys in the bar an assertive "no" when they ask to join them at the lake house & it's the polite sober Stuntman Mike that kills them. In the second half, the Tennessee girls are a lot more in your face about how much they kick ass, but can't hold their men on a leash worth a damn. That's good subversive writing.
@weebjeez
@weebjeez 2 года назад
I mean... not necessarily going to jail for murder. If the group had an actual long history of murder, there's gonna be proof in there, even if it gets burned. either that, or the fire burns away all possible evidence, at which point all the "heroes" have to do is just not say anything about it.

@jadedheartsz
@jadedheartsz 2 года назад
it actually undercuts it's own message by using supernatural crap to explain why those frat boys are evil because that essentially absolves them of any and all responsibility for their actions, it comes off as saying "no it wasn't your fault you were a misogynist prick, it was the ooze that made you that way!" like how Jack Thompson argued a violent video game was responsibility for someone ending up in prison for committing a violent crime and thus trying to absolve the killer of his own wrongdoing.

I got to speak to him one on one briefly and tried not to be a gushing fanboy. It was a thrill to meet him and even remind him that HAL was initially conceived to be a female named Athena. It was only later that I neglected to tell him that he was in the scariest film I have ever seen. Yes, even scarier than The Exorcist. Black Christmas crawls under my skin unlike any other horror film, except for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But meeting someone who worked personally with Kubrick superseded everything else. He was very nice and even autographed a 2001 book for me. It's my favourite memory of the theatre. A remake of horror films has never made any sense to me. Ever since this film came out, I’ve never referred to this movie without quotation marks. Because, as bad and shameless as the 2006 Black X-Mas remake was (tasteless, shameless, pandering by filling the cast with hot girls, an awful 3rd act twist, taking away all the mystery from the killer), you can at least see how it connects to the original. I can understand someone trying to defend it, especially after this 100 minute Twitter post. And at least it was rated R. Tell me: has there EVER been a movie that was downgraded to a PG-13 that actually made more money and got a broader audience? I’m sure it had to have happened at some point because they keep doing this and continue failing and failing at it. “Black Christmas” is the absolute WORST-not worst Christmas movie, but it certainly deserves to be up there with Deck The Halls, Christmas With the Kranks, and Surviving Christmas-but it’s the movie that will hold the distinction of being the most unwatchably atrocious slasher film and one of the Top 10 worst horror films of the last 20 years (exclusively counting theatrical releases) and one of the most misandrist movies ever made. Even worse than the LAST equally sexist remake Charlie’s Angels

@@jadedheartsz really? The same Charlie’s Angels movie, not the one from the 2000’s with Cameron Diaz and Lucy Lu but the one from the same year as this, where literally EVERY male character is portrayed as evil, sexist, or both, makes a running gag out of seeing men get badly hurt or thrown off roofs and going “I’m sure he’s fine”, shows every FEMALE character as hyper-competent to the point of rendering each other redundant, and even does a bait and switch of making Patrick Stewart a villain. THAT movie isn’t sexist?

@ThatRandomEncounterGuy
@ThatRandomEncounterGuy 2 года назад
@@jadedheartsz are you in 4th grade or something? Seriously. I can tell you something right now: sexism, it’s a two-way street. You don’t make one gender look better by making the other look horrible; it makes you a fraud and shows that you had to play on the lowest difficulty with the highest handicap possible. When every female character is equally good at everything, then it defeats the purpose of even having them as a team at all. Imagine playing Team Fortress 2 if the Heavy had the speed of Scout and could heal like a Medic, or if the Pyro had the range and accuracy of Sniper and could build sentries like Engineer-it would completely obliterate the entire point of class selection because all of them would be able to do everything. This isn’t about “hypercompetent female characters”, this is about fighting for a shitty, pandering reboot that literally had the cast telling people in interviews “Oh, if you don’t like this movie, it means you’re sexist and hate women in action movies”. Black Widow made $379 million, Captain Marvel broke $1 Billion worldwide, Birds of Prey $200 Million. It’s almost like people hate PANDERING more than they hate “hypercompetent female characters”

Here's the thing. The movie of a female taking revenge the serial killer route for men who raped and or wrong them has been done not only before. But also BETTER. I Spit On Your Grave is a movie that is empowering because she takes back her agency and her strength being a woman out smarting and killing her rapist by being a woman. Using her feminity and the ways she is a woman (sexually and other wise) to her advantage. Like a bad ass. She becomes what all victims of these terrible crimes want to be. Whole; strong, and you get back a small bit of what was taken from you. This movie doesn't want their woman to be strong they want them to think their strong where if they were even in the same situation as I Spit on Your Grave I don't think they'd be able to do anything. Thinking about it though, maybe this was trying to update teen character cliches, so the audience won’t mind seeing their deaths. In the 80s, slasher film teenagers were primarily drunken materialistic spoiled brats who were mainly just trying to get in each other’s pants. In the 90s, they were cynical pop culture junkies who were convinced they were too cool for school. And now, the characters are over opinionated, under experienced, addicted to causes as hobbies, and more a hashtag than a human.

Now I'm a progressive. I believe Black Lives Matter, trans rights are human rights, abortion is health care, etc. And I do think political messages in horror films can work if the movie is good. This movie, however, is not. In fact, it's part of a current trend of movies and TV shows that try way too hard to show how woke they are. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's people trying too damn hard.

You just know this movie fails at being a slasher movie, let alone a remake of a horror classic when Kris turns out to be the worst, most obnoxious, hypocritical, and objectively horrible person in the entire cast yet she wasn't even meant to be a part of the movie's epic over the top death scenes (not that there's any) like most slasher movies would do. Also speaking of Kris, it sucks that there was actually an event where a school had a group of student "activists" petitioning for a damn boulder to be removed out of the school compound (just because they deemed it to be racist) and somehow managed to do it, but not before spending $40,000.

(Parodying the Cinema Snob's *"SLEEPAWAY CAMP 3"* review) 7:03 Why would Cary Elwes said yes to this film? He was in *"The Jungle Book"* (1994), *"TWISTER",* *"ROBIN HOOD: Men In* *Tights",* two *"SAW"* films, *"DRACULA"* (1992), *"A Christmas Carol"* (2009), and *"LIAR LIAR",* the 1997 comedy film with Jim Carrey. Hell, he was Wesley in *"The Princess Bride"!*

Would be an actually good movie if it was a self-aware R-rated self-parody with plenty of over the top gore and kills and craziness. If it was a hyper violent dark horror comedy. Where the men are over the top misogynists and the women were over the top feminists and it was actually deliberate and self-aware for the sake of comedy.
