In this video BLACK LIVES MATTER IN MEDICINE, I will briefly discuss the history of discrimination in medicine and what its like being a black doctor in America.
My name is Dr. Karen Francois and I am a 5th year Attending physician based out of NY. These stories will chronicle my life in Anesthesia, as an Anesthesiologist and home life with my husband and 3 children. Through these glimpses into my life I hope to inspire and motivate young women and men into seriously considering Anesthesia as a career choice.
I am a Doctor and I was born and raised in the projects of the Bronx, NY and I made it to become a highly respected physician If I can do it, then anyone else in my situation can do the same.

I’m so glad this being spoken about so openly and recognized. I never thought I would see it.

When I was pregnant my husband was in the military at the time. I saw this because he was deployed at the time and couldn’t go to appointments with me. I had hyperemesis but it took me going to the hospital three times for them to finally admit me to the hospital. By that time I was coughing up blood from vomiting so much. Two of my organs were in failure as well. When I got there I had a BLACK female doctor ask me how many kids I had and if they were by the same man. I than had another doctor come in the next day and ask me other non medical questions I didn’t think they would ask ppl who weren’t of color. That was the first experience I had with racial bias in medicine. I changed my major because I never want anyone to feel like I did especially during a time they should be at their happiest. I’m on a PA pathway but your video was inspiring. I love to see woman of color in medicine.

Thank you for this video. I’m only in high school, but I know I want to do something in the field of anesthesia when I’m older. I love to see someone who looks like me who I can look up too. You are an inspiration. “I know who I am and whose I am” is definitely something to remember.

Happy Juneteenth!!! This is such a great video. We definitely need more diversity in medicine and black physicians to help combat the health disparities in poorer communities. I am proud to say I will be one of them ✊🏿

Thank you for exposing Dr. Sims. This is rarely talked about in my opinion, the very foundation of OB/GYN as we know it today was torture. This is improtant to me as a female even though I a not black. And of course it disturbs me that he tortured black and African American women like this. I don’t trust OBGYN at all though because of this history. I stopped going for paps after I found out about Dr. Sims

Huge fan! As a chronic pain patient it deeply saddens me that some drs may think black people dont feel pain as much meaning they might not get as good or even treated at all as me.

So sorry to hear that! Lyme disease is very difficult to treat, please look for doctors in your area who are great rheumatologists neurologists or infectious disease specialists. Unfortunately I am not associated with anyone in those fields in CA. I wish you the best and hope you can find an effective treatment for you.
