Despite the church burnings, murders, and brain stew that defined its viciously Satanic second wave in Norway, there is Christian black metal.

I think "inserting" is a harsh word, it implies a level of falseness, I'm sure some Christian musicians are fake, but there are legitimately young people who grow up enjoying that music and want to make it themselves, but are also Christian. It's not them forcibly inserting themselves into a scene, it's just them expressing themselves, and trying to squelch the freedom of expression is definitely not metal. Besides, Satan is a biblical figure, so the bands both draw inspiration from the same text, just the opposite sides, it's a little hypocritical to say one is more authentic than the other. ALSO, how can you justify listening to music of people who burn buildings and murder? If I was a fan of black metal I would much rather listen to the first wave of the not so serious bands, or listen to the Christian ones, at least they don't promote violence.

Believe it or not, some people like Black Metal for the sound, not for the meaning, and some of them feel guilty listening to Satanic music. Personally I either don't care what the lyrics are or just listen to the Black Metal that doesn't directly bash Christians, but still I think its nice that there are BM bands I can show my mom. And Black Metal, like most music, is defined by sound, not lyrics. That's why there are subgenres of Black Metal, to separate music of the same sound into more subtle sound categories or different lyrical themes. Then everyone is happy. As an art form, Black Metal isn't restricted to one message. It can take whatever form it desires.

+Xyloblast Tons of "true black metal" as I've heard it preached over the years has horrible audio quality. But I mean that's what you get when you record with a $3 mic. Trying to be raw for the sake of sounding like a band playing in a metal trash can is more laughable than christian's interjecting themselves into a genre of music that apparently they have no business dabbling in... It's all music. I grew up on Emperor, CoF, Dimmu, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Cryptopsy etc. etc. All very much blasphemous music. I myself am a christian and it's ridiculous to say that christian's can't enjoy non christian music or even try to replicate the sound in which they favor. We all at some point try to reproduce something we have seen or heard. Does religious music artists and communities make fun of or condemn an "heathen" artist who is playing a hymn? Doubtful. Music is a melting pot. Let it simmer and enjoy the aromas. Taste it if you'd like, I just hope it isn't to salty...

Ok first things first. Christian stereotypes, LIKE ALL STEREOTYPES, are stupid, wrong, and annoying. Now that that's off my chest I would like to talk about the music because that's all it is. Music. The message doesn't define a genre. Does oversexualization, drugs, and racism define rap because some artists do use it? No. So why is black metal, a very interesting and cool style of metal, defined by satanism? Sure that's the main message of nearly all the artists but, again, it's just a message. Why can't the message be about personal struggles, politics, or other religions? My point is the music genre is the same regardless of what the lyrics are about. I am a Christian and personally prefer Christian death metal. If you're interested in death metal, Christian or not, check out Impending Doom. Sorry that was so ridiculously long.

***** How do you get that from anything I'm saying? We are all here for a short time and everything positive we do to help each other out and those in the future makes ALL the difference in the world to people living now and those to come. Nothing positive we do is useless at all. You only live once, and so does everyone else. Knowing that, wouldn't you want everyone to have the best quality of life they can while they are here? Yes, in the far distant future, the Sun will engulf the Earth, and if we haven't relocated as a species by that point or died off, we will be wiped out. That doesn't mean it's useless to do anything, because there's the here and now, and there's many generations left to come that will be directly impacted by our actions in the present.

I just want to say that you clearly don't get black metal and you never will... often it's about rejecting religion entirely, especially Christianity as it was forced upon Scandinavia and replaced native paganism and often all it is, is an expression of anger, it is about personal struggle but on a much deeper, hidden level.

The real question is whether the beliefs of the creator of a genre define the entire genre forever. The style of "Gospel" music is often used for secular composing, so why does loud screamy music having a background in Satanic behavior exclude it from ever being used in a Christian manner? It's literally just a certain composition of instruments and style; it's not the style of music itself, rather it's the CULTURE that had the Satanist underpinnings, and culture changes.

Yes, as both a metal artist and a Christian, I say there can be a form of "Crhistain Black Metal" ... do consider how brutal the Christian scripture is as a whole, and remember where Satan came from (another Christian belief). I would even go so far as to say the main premise of black metal (Satan) would not exist without the Mosaic faiths.
@alexanderarnold6512
@alexanderarnold6512 10 лет назад
Also being a metal artist myself, I do not think you can have a form of metal called "Christian Black Metal". If you do a little research into the history and beginnings of black metal, you can see how anti-religious it is. I don't believe that you can't have christian music "sounding" like black metal, but you can not call it "Christian Black Metal". It has to be called something else.
@PerspectiveZero
@PerspectiveZero 10 лет назад
***** The question is: Is Black Metal "Anti-Religious" meaning it is against all "Religions" or is it Satanic? These two things are different...the concept of Satan is Jewish. Christian and Islamic alike. However, If Black Metal meant "Anti-Religious', then having Christian Black Metal is contradictory... If Black Metal meant 'Satanic', then there could be Christian Black Metal as Satan is a Christian concept.

I'm pretty sure that Christian Metal can be found through every Extreme Metal subgenre out there. There's Unblack Metal which consists of a lot of bands. Then you have Death Metal, Deathcore, and of course Thrash. I can't name any Death Metal or Trash Christian Metal bands right off of the top of my head although I do know that Impending Doom, a Deathcore band is Christian Metal. Come to think of it there are at least a handful of bands in every genre of Metal that is Christian or has had a Christian lyrical song. :o Although I am not a fan of Christian lyrics and I prefer more Atheist, Viking, Pegan, and Satanic lyrics themes (because I just can't take the lyrics as seriously as Christian Metal does.) I do admire the fact that these bands are doing what they want to do :P Not many people can say that about themselves can they?

In black metal the words are usually impossible to understand when you hear them, though the sound of the music alone suggests it's satanic, or against authority either natural or super natural. To play black metal and scream christian lyrics over top of it is absurd, makes no sense at all, and can only be taken as a joke. Christian black metal is satire, weather it means to be or not.

Of course, Christians CAN play black metal, but why would they borrow the sound of a music genre that is typically anti-christian? To me, that's just stupid.
@Friend-
@Friend- 9 лет назад
I think the answer is pretty obvious: because they like the sound. How is it stupid for Christians to make music in a certain style, just because the people who are making that kind of music are mostly anti-Christian? Think about it this way: electronic music is one of my absolute favorite things in the world and it's my dream to one day make a living making electronic music. But let's propose an alternate history: what if the pioneers of electronic music were all Satanists and as a result of their influence, 99% of electronic today was about Satan and burning churches. Would it be stupid for me to make the music that sounds beautiful to me, since I'd be borrowing the sound of a music genre that's typically anti-Christian?
@rtremblay87
@rtremblay87 9 лет назад
SgtSlavin That's a fair point. Another example would be straight-edge hardcore. They liked the sound of punk rock and agressive music, but didn't care for the "sex and drugs" part, so they built they own subgenre and their own scene. But I don't know...I feel christian black metal is corny as hell...in the same way that something like "capitalist blues" would be. Again, I'm not saying it can't be done, or that some bands have a monopoly on certain sounds. I just think it's cringe-worthy in some cases.
@Friend-
@Friend- 9 лет назад
Rich Tremblay I didn't know about straight-edge hardcore, that was really interesting, thanks for telling me about it! I see what you mean though about Christian black metal being corny. The sound really doesn't lend itself to positive lyrics about Jesus's guidance and whatnot. I think Christian black metal could probably work if the lyrics had more of a gothic, "save me from Satan, I'm neck-high in evil!" etc. etc. sort of tone instead but personally, I wouldn't listen to it either way.
@joshdieckmann595
@joshdieckmann595 9 лет назад
Rich Tremblay 2 points: 1. Straight Edge does not stem from Christians who were into punk and hardcore. A tiny bit of research would uncover that its genesis is via the early hardcore punk band Minor Threat, who had a song called "Straight Edge" and intimated in the lyrics that the band members had better things to do with their time than to "f*$% their heads". Did the Christian punk and hardcore community embrace straight edge? Yes, they absolutely did. Beginning especially with the wave of punk and hardcore that was birthed from the west coast hardcore scene, and fertilized by bands getting signed to Tooth & Nail Records, and subsequently, Solid State Records, then Facedown Records, etc. But Straight Edge as an idea, and later, a scene, preceded the faith-based hardcore and punk scenes by quite a time span. 2. I'd like to make a distinction with regards to something you said: "why would they borrow the sound of a music genre that is typically anti-christian?" What might define an "evil sound"? Is it the "sound" of the music that is truly anti-christian, or is it the lyrical content? Music, in and of itself, is simply a series of notes, beats, chords, etc. that cannot inherently be evil, no matter what some so-called church authorities have claimed or speculated through the years. Rather, the lyrical content is what makes something pro or anti-topic (or neutral, in some cases). As such, despite the anti-christian lyrical content of bands like Darkthrone, Burzum, Belphegor, or Mayhem, the sound of the music is still appealing to those, like myself, who enjoy the more abrasive aspects of the metal genre. Of that subset of people, musicians who espouse a faith in Christ wish to create the same type of music, but change the lyrical content. Black Metal "purists" who feel the genre itself is inherently "evil" often decry Christian Black Metal (CBM) or "unblack" metal bands, because they feel that the CBM music lacks the requisite atmosphere of "true" or "kvlt" black metal, because the music itself doesn't contain that element of "evil" required to truly be black metal. Note that, until more recently, many CBM listings on the Metal Archives had the genre listed as 'Black Metal' rather than simply Black Metal. I'm glad to see that has changed, especially given the quality of some of the upper echelon CBM bands like Crimson Moonlight, Frosthardr, Divine Symphony, Elgibbor, Frost Like Ashes, Vardoger, and A Hill To Die Upon. For anyone else who isn't a purist, music is music, and the genre trappings aren't necessarily all-inclusive.

You're obviously confusing musical style and lyrical content, believing them to be one in the same. To see why you're wrong, consider this example. Imagine two power metal bands; one sings about fantasy, one about space. They wouldn't be classified as dragon power metal and space power metal (respectively). No, it's just power metal. Christian black metal bands are just black metal. They could be singing about sunshine and rainbows and how cute puppies are and it won't affect the genre. Additionally, you're greatly misinformed if you think black metal is inherently satanic. There are plenty of black metal bands that don't have satanic lyrics. It's simply the predominant choice. And lastly, black metal artists and fans are not all insane. Those three people you pointed out are by far and away the minority in the black metal community.

Christian "black" metal doesn't really do it for me. However, some Christian heavy metal is actually superior to a lot of secular heavy metal. Back in the 90s especially, bands like Tourniquet, Vengeance Rising, Living Sacrifice, and thrash band The Crucified was just better music than what mainstream metal had to offer. And any metal enthusiast that could be mature and honest enough to overlook the "Christian" label (if it is just too much to deal with), and compare purely musically would likely agree in many cases.

agreed, some of that stuff is better than mainstream "metal" played on the radio, but no actual metal fan listens to what the radio calls "metal." i had friends growing up that listened to those bands and it always seemed like some goofy compromise with their parents. like they wanted to listen to something heavy and didn't want to get in trouble with their mom or they simply weren't allowed to listen to other metal. the whole thing usually seemed lame and worse yet, totally un-metal. i've always felt like half the bands playing it are just capitalizing on christian teens. there has been far better metal coming out in the secular world the whole time and maybe you were just never exposed to it.

Varg didn't kill Euronymous to prove he "was evil". He did it because Euronymous tried to take him out in the woods, tie him up, torture him to death, and record it. He overheard this directly when he called a guitarist for Mayhem to tell him while that guitarist was hanging with Varg.

In order to change someone corrupted with the devil you must talk or dressing the same genre as them and show them inspiration through your music. Like Horde and Ancestor they tried speaking to young people through there music, it works. Sad thing is heroes always have their enemies in this case there judged by their own religion and the ones opposing it. Jesus was a outcast untrusted and ended up tortured and killed for telling the truth and being different. Christian Black Metal or any rock, metal ect out representing Him. Sadly our society is the Jews and the Romans who persecuted the messiah. Our society gets near extinction every day. I pray for the ones judged for being different.

Why are you even on the internet? Don't you know you need to sell your possessions and live in poverty in order to enter the kingdom? I hope you're not having Thanksgiving with your family instead of the poor and the sick, because that's another great way to get locked out.

Hunter Campbell The point is that any energy that you've spent on prayer could have been used for things that are actually helpful. They effectively are, it's just that stereotypically, metal (especially black metal) comes with a negative connotation, generally associated with murder and/or worshiping Satan etc.. The genre is more defined by how the music sounds, and not so much what the lyrics are, however you'll find that especially in metal, most genres are heavily linked to certain lyrical themes. For example when most people think of power metal, the instant thought is a fantasy theme filled with dragons and knights, but in reality there are plenty of power metal bands that write about everything from philosophy to war history.

@azraelsgrave
@azraelsgrave 9 лет назад
SoupCann Correct me if I got the story wrong. From what I read, and can remember. Euro tried to kill Varg initially, which failed. So Varg killed Euro instead. True he could have stopped the attack and left it at that. It sort of reminds me of Ender's Game. He chased and killed him to end all future attacks. So on one hand you have a guy making things from a dead body, sipping brain soup, attempting to kill someone else. And in turn end up dead for their failed attempt. By the way this also comes from a interview I remember watching with Varg. That Euro was actually the one trying to kill someone. Varg just didn't stop the attack, he finished it. And racists are not a minority in Black Metal I hope you know. So this is like claiming Metal itself is played on banjos and boxes. When it comes to music I care little for the person or that persons life. Over if the music is fucking good. Will I listen to offensive material? Hello! Black Metal has a shit ton of that .. its not Hello Kitty Playland. So in all of that all we are left now with is arson. So now about arson. Yes he burned churches, empty ones. Yes its still arson but no one was in them. Would you rather he burned them while they were in Sunday Mass? He was making a statement, a childish one in my eyes, but a statement nonetheless. Do I agree with arson? Not in the least. Always better ways to assert how you feel. Like in a hateful racist song. So the rest of us puritans can listen to, and shake our fists in contempt.
@superluigi121
@superluigi121 9 лет назад
***** Well, you're partly right, but all that stuff that Varg said on Euro trying to kill him? There's no evidence. His apartment didn't have the cattle prod or any of the other murder weapons he was supposedly going to use. Blackthorne has even said that the murder was premeditated and that Varg told him before the murder. Over the course of his life Euro said in interviews that he would kill dozens of people, but he never acted upon it. People who knew him also said that Euro was really not nearly as "evil" as he wanted people to think he was. The guy didn't smoke, and Manheim even called him a "family guy". The brain stew, while I've never found any real evidence, seems to just be something made up, although the skull necklace did happen. Personally, I think he was just trying to show that black metal wasn't just a fad and that it should be taken seriously, which worked. Black metal is still an active scene and has survived past him. I also think that it's partly because of the great history of the genre that people love black metal. Who at this point doesn't know what happened to all these norwegians (and one swede) over 20 years ago.

A genre doesn't mean the lyrics are going to be evil or not. While it can be determined by the lyrics it also has to do with how the instruments are played and how the lyrics are sung. It's more of a style than choice than always a lyrical one. If you were to sing most songs in a normal voice that had no style markers you may or may not be able to tell what genre it is. Except for the lay out of the lyrics (style). So a Christian band can play rock or black metal it's a choice. Many bands don't use a Christian label and don't choose to be called a Christian band but the members may be Christian and have lyrics resembling that.
@RCAvhstape

The reason Christian metal, and Christian rock in general, gets mocked is because rock music has always been about rebelling against authority and institutions such as the church, and Christian rock basically uses the musical vocabulary of rock to turn that around. Singing metal songs about being a good Christian is a non-sequitur to anyone who doesn't buy into the belief system and sounds like a really well-made Weird Al parody. the irony is, Metal is music that is shaped to be scary and evil and not pretty. To grab it and say, "I am going to play this scary, evil sounding ugly music and insert pro Christian messages, thereby making it Christian", is missing the original intention of the music, and how it got to sounding the way it does. It is why you don't hear evil metal lyrics on Ukulele, they don't really portray that kind of vibe well. Playing frantic beats, screeching barely understandable lyrics, using unsettling harmonies and melodies, is not really a good musical backdrop for eternal peace with the creator. Of course we are free to pursue our art, and Christian Metal has its place, but it still sounds like 'Evil' Metal
@ViolentFEAR

The irony of that is of course that Christianity doesn't teach anything nice about the world. Christians believe we live in a Fallen World, our God was crucified and killed by the Empire and though resurected still with his wounds. True, ultimately there is salvation and the triumph over evil (unless one is a strong hell advocate of course) but that doesn't mean one can't believe that we are living in hell right now. +Scarlett S. right on. and it is your right. and I will always defend your right to voice your opinion, and mine. Although I don't know why Black Metal would appeal to a hardcore Chistian in the firstplace. IDK. Mabey it's like the Spainish Inquisition strain of Christian?

Agree 100% with this top comment. Fuck this guy for not knowing even half the truth. If he had watched "Until The Light Takes Us" and Varg's recent videos talking about what really happened in the Black Metal scene between 1991 to 1993, this guy in the video might actually have sounded like he knew what he was talking about.

Scarlett S. if you don't like Unblack Metal bands then don't listen to it. It is really that simple.

People have a right to write music in what ever form or about whatever subject matter they want. Music is about self expression, and getting your message out there

About the whole Mayhem thing with Dead, you forgot to mention that Euronymous also took pictures of Dead’s body and the band later used said pictures as a cover for a live album. Look up mayhem dawn of the black hearts if you think I’m kidding.

I'm a Christian who likes some subgenres of death metal. Not black metal, save for a few songs from an american dude called Gallowbraid. The genre sounds like dogshit mostly, is the problem. The culture isn't. If Varg didn't sound like dogshit I'd give him a listen! Sure, whatever. A bunch of metal sounds like dogshit though. Most of metal does. Maybe all of it does? I think shoving satan into your grinding noise opera is about as original and interesting as covering a beatles tune. nobody ever says anything or does anything interesting about or with it. It's all part of constructing images and textures of brutality and I know for a lot of these people it's not about hearing music but about social scenes, appearances, belonging to a group, and hearing someone inaudibly scream their darkest thoughts to the back drop of the noisiest almost rhythmic non-music they can produce with musical instruments. I don't really care if that's your scene. If you like that. The thing is, I'm a Christian, not a saint, come at me with threats of death for having faith just because you think certain subgenres of music, have inborn stances on the issues of faith and belief, I'm not gonna sit there and be a pacifist observer. You may meet your maker. I don't know my day, but you don't know yours. It feels dumb that you need to be so hardcore and you invest so much of your identity, dearly invisible, unknown black metal enthusiast and reader of this comment, into this music, into dark deceivers. I also don't know why so many christians are afraid of mainstream music, or producing a song that has a non-worshipped thoguht, or something more interesting to say about their faith than setting typical worship song lyrics to the same sort of lame ass noise satan worshippers listen to so they can enhance their mental perceptions of how hardcore they are.

The poor production quality is intentional. It's supposed to sound dead. All Shall Fall by Immortal has quite good production quality, as do Dimmu Borgir's last couple albums.

Lies, read the bible and you will see how the darkness and light coexist in many instances. For example, Levitt and th concubine, Numbers:5-11 up-till numbers 5-30 ish, and not to mention God flooded the earth and killed a good chunk of people with a great flood.

God cleary say his way is a way of faith for we "walk by faith and not by sight" . I am sorry but as christain death metal is not Godly and does not glorify Christ. There is nothing holy about it. God is not about a music genre or a style or entertainment , it about repentance and putting your faith in JESUS. PERIOD

FlaccidFajita 2 Corinthians 6:14 2Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 1 Peter 2:9King James Version (KJV) 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; The point is as christains we are called to be the light how can we be christains and act and do things like the world. if there is no difference between what is of God and what is of the Devil, then there is a really big problem. I think that you should pray and ask God for discernment because at the end of the day serving Jesus is not about a style or genre of music . It's about repenting from your sins and putting your faith in Jesus the one that died on the cross for you and me. Death metal didn't die on the cross for me Jesus christ did

Black Metal is still a thing in 2016 and black metal has a satanic trend but is based off Scandinavian paganism and not satanism. Also most black metal bands are coming out these days as DSBM, which is a depression/suicide fuelled genre.
