AliasSLH There are so many modern powders with vastly different burn rates so there isn't an easy answer for a quick equivalency. With 45 Colt for instance you could use 8-8.5 gr. of Unique to duplicate the black powder loads.

A few years ago I pulled out my late fathers black powder revolvers (old Peitta's from the 70's and 80's) and one of them was locked up stuck. He failed to take it completely apart when he cleaned it, Navy Arms Pietta 1851 replica and the BP residue had gummed up the on the cylinder pin and the cylinder was stuck solid on the pin. It was a brass frame too so I felt I had to be real careful about jarring it apart lol. I had to soak that sucker for weeks and still had to carefully pop it loose. They definitely need to be thoroughly cleaned!! Love your channel!

Just to add on what Hickok is saying. In the 1880s The french devolped both a smokeless cartridge and rifle that can withstand the the pressures of smokeless powder and they came up with the Lebel Rifle. France was head of the game for awhile till all the other countries found out how to do it or so. Therefore we adopted our first smokeless powder rifle. The Krag- Jorgesen. Then John Browning did his own tinkering and the Winchester Model 1893 turned into the famous Winchester model 1897. Smokeless powder is more Volatile than blackpowder. Burns Slower but creates more heat and pressure.

I've had the UMC ammo Gunk up my 357 revolver in less than a hundred rounds. It was so bad after 50 rounds the cylinder was sticking and did not want to turn. And there was a lot of unspent powder in the casings that I ejected. The only reason I bought that ammo was because it was available back when ammo shortages were in full effect. I don't know how many people remember now but there was lots of time where you could not buy ammo to save your life.

Black Powder residue is 'hygroscopic.' That means that it absorbs moisture from the air and holds it against the steel, making rust a certainty. More modern solvents can deal with it, but it used to respond only to very hot, soapy water followed by lots of oil. Cleaning sessions were long and difficult. Smokeless powder started out as 'Guncotton,' the earliest form of nitrocellulose, which blew apart a lot of guns that were not made to handle the higher pressures.

About a year ago, I was shooting my vaquero in .45 Colt out back. About 24 rounds. Air was fairly still. Using American Pioneer BP sub. Left a big cloud of white smoke out in the woods that was still out there by the time I was through after 5 minutes and went back up to the house. Pointed it out to my mother-in-law out the back window. It very very slowly drifted out if the woods over the pond and almost hovered over the pond for another 5-10 minutes before it finally completely moved on across the property line and dissipated. Looked kinds spooky if you didn’t know what it was.

@deandeann1541
@deandeann1541 3 года назад
There is a slow burning Smokeless powder that comes close to the black powder pressure curve - 5774 if I remember correctly, but that may not be right. It was the smokeless powder that Savage allowed to be used in their black powder rifle. Savage changed their mind as someone still managed to blow their gun up and chose to sue Savage rather than take responsibility for their own error.
@bi0dude42O
@bi0dude42O 6 лет назад
if not mistaken black powder 45's propelled a 250gr bullet to just under 1000fps yet todays smokeless loads w/ that energy are considered too high pressure for even modern saa's. are black powder loads the only option for self defense in an saa?

Real gunpowder (black powder) cleans up easily with water. Soapy water is better and hot soapy water is best. A nylon bore brush and hot soapy water and an old toothbrush will get it clean in a jiffy. Ballistol added to the water is a good thing to prevent rust as a coating is left after the hot water evaporates. With proper bullet lube a revolver should not foul , out (what Hickok describes as losing accuracy due to hard fouling in barrel) if you are using period correct bullets with generous lube holding capacity. Rifles with longer barrels even challenge proper black powder era designed bullets and lube but there are bullet designs now that serve far better. Great fun!

Agree that shooters often have a mistaken idea that black powder's lower pressure makes it less powerful. Black powder has a longer burn time and can actually achieve higher velocity than smokeless powder limited to the same pressure peak. I acquired an online copy of the 1904 Thompson-LaGarde handgun tests; the 1904 chart of cartridges used listed early smokeless 45 Colt UMC ammo as barely around 700 fps (250 gr bullet) at a time when Remington factory 45 Colt ammo loaded with 40 grs of black powder would hit well over 900 fps from a 4.75" Colt SA barrel (Elmer Keith in SIXGUNS). The same 1904 chart listed the .476 Webley at 729 fps with a 288 gr bullet even though the charge was only 18 grs Black Powder. The British apparently used extremely fine grain black powder (5Fg) in revolver cartridges, which is how the .476 288gr bullet could achieve 729 fps, even with a low 18 gr charge. In THE GUN, (W. W. Greener, 1910 edition) on page 552, is a picture of black powder granulations then in use; the "revolver powder" illustrated is the finest grained of all illustrated, and appears to be about 5Fg as it is even finer grained than the Swiss 4Fg I have on hand to compare.
