Remember, there was no such thing as the genre of "Heavy Metal" at this time. -You could say, Black Sabbath was the first Heavy Metal Band. That term wasn't even used until the mid 70s, I think. While I wasn't a huge Fan of these guys, you have to admit, they were way ahead of their time. I was 14 years old in 1970, and I'm now 68. Man, time just flies by.
@Williamottelucas
@Williamottelucas 3 месяца назад
Ha, Dusty, I just wrote more or less the same comment as you at around the same time!
@jw-nz2vx
@jw-nz2vx 3 месяца назад
The term actually came from the 1968 Steppenwolf song Born to be Wild but I'm not sure how long it took to actually become a moniker for the genre at large. It could be argued that some late Beatles tracks and some Hendrix tracks qualified as heavy metal before the genre broke out proper with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Iron Butterfly, and Steppenwolf. But all those other bands covered a more diverse range of rock music, while Black Sabbath has always played what we now classify as metal even before that term was commonplace. So I think it's proper to call Sabbath the first true heavy metal band, as long as we give the other founding fathers their credit as well.
@thomasferguson2795
@thomasferguson2795 3 месяца назад
You nailed it. Being 67 and growing up with all of this, I completely agree. I bought “Are you experienced” in ‘67 and was just blown away by Purple Haze. A writer around that time characterized the song as, metal raining down like rain. And of course as you mentioned, Heavy metal thunder, in Born to be wild. Along with the sounds of some other very heavy sounds of the late sixties. Great stuff.
@trajectoryunown
@trajectoryunown 3 месяца назад
There were definitely at least a handful of metal songs prior, but Sabbath is very likely the first metal band. Early metal has considerable overlap with rock. There's no real way to distinguish one from the other without omitting some vital piece of metal history on a technicality. Lemmy's classic opener was always, "We are Motorhead, and we play Rock N Roll." Way I see it, if the guys making the music don't care about the label, I don't think we should sweat it.

Fun fact Tony actually made his own artificial fingers to record this from an accident that happened right before he was to be in the studio
@charlesm9929
@charlesm9929 3 месяца назад
The accident occurred when he was 17 years old and working in a place that produced sheet metal. After the tips of some of the fingers of his right hand were cut off he was depressed, and thought that his dream of becoming a rock guitarist was dead. I believe it was one of his coworkers that encouraged him to overcome the tragedy, and introduced him to the music of guitarist Django Reinhardt. Reinhardt was an amazing performer who only had the use of two fingers and the thumb of his left hand. The fourth and fifth fingers had been badly burned. Tony Iommi was inspired after listening to Django Reinhardt, and the rest is history.

Bill Ward (drummer) like Bonham of Zeppelin proves once again you can do so much with so little. One of the greatest drum performances ever - on a near minimalist kit. Neil Pert will (justifiably) always be considered likely the best of all time with his performance and skill and precision with a hundred different surfaces - but this brutal savage display that births newer guys like David Grohl shows how much sound you can make with a simple set-up.

I’m late to the party, but glad you enjoyed on of the greatest. Your comment about Ozzy’s “ tenacity on stage “ was very insightful. Well said.

All of that sound by Bill Ward on drums. Came from a basic drum kit with one riding tom tom and one floor tom tom and a extra cymbal. And Geezer Butler was a excellent base and was the bands lyrics writer.

Oh my God!!! The best performance of this song in the history of Black Sabbath. I have been recommending this performance to people for years. This is the creation of heavy metal. 53 fucking years ago......amazing.

So I have a Mashup version I call "Valkarie Pigs" with sound track from Apocalypse Now movie playing Flight of the Valkaries to sounds of bombs and gun fire. You here helicopters. Someone screams "Run Charlie." It ends with Robert Duvall saying, " I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. It smells like ... victory" And then you kick into War Pigs. It is very emotional played this way.
