📸💗 Infinite Thanks, Doug, for your *fantastic review* of the BMPCC, which I am soon to purchase! I'm very pleased that they were so kind as to completely replace the used camera body for a new one for you. Wishing you all the best, brother. Carlos
@@TimeCodeMechanics once its done competing in the film festival circuit, I'll release it here on my RU-vid channel. Most festivals won't allow you to enter if the film is publicly available first.
I've been looking to get a Blackmagic, and I'm 90% sure I'm getting this one. I keep looking at the 4K and 6K models' footage, and I can't stop thinking they look like video. High end video, but video nonetheless. The OG looks like 16mm and I love it.
I bought one of these when BMD had a sale for $500. LOVE this camera. Good for not being noticed and producing an excellent image. Ours lives on a gimbal these days.
Mike Flynn Google Plus Hey how do you find this camera on a gimbal We have one at work doing nothing I thought I could use it as a gimbal cam But as the battery is rubbish I’m not sure I should invest in an external battery
The deep of field is actually much shallower in m4/3. The problem is that it crops all the lenses so you are forced to use wider lenses to frame the image and wider lenses equals deeper depth of field.
I totally agree, I was really hoping for the BMPCC4k to have this same type of sensor with more resolution, better battery life, etc. But it seems the BMPCC4k gives a more video-ish / documentary style image that just can't compare to the original. The organic, cinematic feel from the original pocket camera is nothing short of visual magic compared to the newer pocket 4k. I need to see more footage of the pocket 6k to see if it's also the same look as the 4k or not. Not sure why BlackMagic would think people wouldn't want to retain the cinematic feel of the original. Maybe too filmic for all the vloggers out there? lol
@@hzambrana cant believe they changed the color science/sensor, why would they do that, it was the prime thing about this camera back in the day!!! what a dissappointment
What lens would you recommend for the bmpcc? I am looking to use it for shooting my music videos. 13:28 out of focus. :D I want a lens that can autofocus.
Thank you for a fantastic review, very helpful! Just wondering, does the metabones adaptor decrease the minimum aperture of the lens as well as increasing the maximum? I'm wondering if it would be difficult to shoot outdoors on older lenses without the use of a whole matte box setup.
In effect yes. The speed booster just amplifies the light hitting the sensor. Having said that most lenses do not perform well at their maximum aperture. I generally don't shoot above f8 so that's really not an issue for me.. To shoot daylight outdoors with this camera, especially with the speed booster, it really requires neutral density filters, and a good IR cut filter.
BMD did not develop BRAW to provide something better, but to protect itself against legal problems with RED. CinemaDNG is much better and is also real RAW. BRAW is not.
Justin Phillip of course the record levels can vary depending upon the gain of the particular mic connected to the recorder. For example the the lav mic that I used to record this video with is fairly hot, so I can set the record level of the H1 to around 50%. However as a rule I generally start with the H1 set to about 75%, and never raise the record level of the camera above 30%. I'm generally happier if the camera is below 20%. On occasion I have set the H1 to its Auto record level when I am in loud environment trying to do run and gun shooting. For example the Comic-Con footage was shot with the auto record level set on. It just ensures that I get decent record levels in a situation where I don't necessarily have time to make adjustments.
Valerio Angelini the background hiss is coming from the internal amplifiers in the camera which are not very good. If you use a dedicated to external amplifier, or something like the Zoom H1 recorder as an amplifier, you can turn the volume down on the camera's internal amplifiers and reduce that hiss by quite a bit.
I am using Zoom H1, tried different settings, even Mic in at 0% and CH1 and CH2 at 50% and 20% but hiss always present. And same hiss even with just a minijack cable in without any external device connected. Do you have the same problem or do you think that maybe my BMPCC has female jack broken?
No my camera is pretty noise free when the gain is turned down. You might have a faulty amplifier in the camera. Maybe contact Blackmagic and see what they can do.
Hey, can you send me a couple shots of the pocket? in DNG? i'm really want to buy one, but i don't access to one for testing, i'm looking the BMPCC and the BMCC, but is really difficult to find RAW footege of the pocket, i find of the BMCC, but no lucky on the BMPCC :/ Can you help me?
Macebao other two than to do some tests when I first got the camera, I haven't had a need to shoot Raw so I don't have any footage available. However I suppose I could go out and shoot a few shots.
Hi there! I really need some help, I have the original pocket cinema camera and I wish to record to my PC bypassing the SD card, would the Black Magic DeckLink recorder work for my intended use? Also can I use it plugged in out of the box preventing having to swap batteries and have long shoots?
I disagree. While I'm excited about the BMPCC 4k, and will probably pick one up, not everyone will need or want a 4k camera. Many people don't have a powerful enough computer to edit 4k. Add to that the original BMPCC will be going down in price, making it more attractive to very low budget film makers.
AtomicAgePictures fair enough. Although I do think that if they improve on the colour science of the new BMPCC4K then more filmmakers will lean towards it. Especially those considering a Gh5/s. Over to you Sony I suppose #a7siii
I think the color science of the Black Magic cameras is already better than almost anything else out there except maybe Canon. Its leaps and bounds above Panasonic and Sony. I've cut seamlessly with footage from the Arri Alexa, which is considered the top of the heap as far as cinema cameras go.
AtomicAgePictures blackmagic has the closest picture to Arri in my opinion. Red is really enhances the warmer colour pallet for me whereas Arri and Black Magic really deliver on a more natural to life look and feel. I was just about to get a BMPC (4K) second hand but this new camera fits perfectly between Ursa and pocket. I'm excited nevertheless.
I've actually been looking at this camera for a while. My conclusion is that it isn't worth $1000. I can get a Panasonic G7 that shoots 4K and is already a super 35 for half the price. True the color image is nice to have, but your going to get more out of a newer camera. Even with firmware updates, this is still a very outdated camera for the price tag. Still, I would experiment with one of these and some old school lenses for fun, if it weren't still so expensive.
Ranger 7 Studios While the G7 is 4K, it's not a super 35 sensor it's micro 4/3 which is considerably smaller. In addition its still an 8-bit camera and for my money the 10 bit color space and the ability to shoot raw absolutely trumps the higher resolution. I don't think I'll ever go back to an 8-bit camera for anything serious.
I like the idea of Black Magic Raw - it does trump typical 8-bit H.264 dslr's. However, I love the ML RAW 10 BIT on my Canon 6D. Ive compared it to Alexa Mini and it is damn close you wouldn't know. Its not the camera, its the person behind the "raw-capable" camera. Lol.
Modern cameras give you conveniences, but not the film look. The BMPCC gives you the film look, but it has zero of the modern conveniences. So it's up to you if you're someone who's after a good result but with a difficult process, or someone who prefers an easy process but with mediocre results. It's actually similar to why some people prefer Linux over Windows.
