We took a ratty 1969 Chevy Camaro and stuffed it with 502 cubic inches of tall-deck LS, then put a world-class racing suspension underneath. Find out what it's like to drive this 580 horsepower brute on the street and on the racetrack, with a special guest appearance by professional driver Conrad Grunewald.

Hello, I know this is a stupid question so sorry, but Im trying to learn. What does it mean referring to the motor when he says "tall deck"? Thank you.
@PowerPerformanceYouTube
@PowerPerformanceYouTube 7 лет назад
Tall deck refers to the height of the deck of the block when measured from the centerline of the crank shaft. Standard deck height for an LS is 9.240 inches. With tall deck blocks, that height is increased (typically) to 9.700 inches. This allows for longer strokes to be use in the engine and thus increases displacement.
@oscrthgrch7
@oscrthgrch7 7 лет назад
No, it's a different casting. www.texas-speed.com/p-606-rhs-tall-deck-ls-race-block-9750-deck-height.aspx
@dalton-at-work

so is it really an LS? or LS-geometry aftermarket casting
@N4CR5

LS geometry after market. Just add a bit more on the cylinder for extra bore stroke.

i hate big wheels on old cars. the tire sidewall is too small for the styling of the body, and the ride height is too tall. the ride height of a car should be at MOST the height of the sidewall. better if less.
@festerhairball6588
@festerhairball6588 5 лет назад
I agree with everything you said but they don't make performance tires in 15" other than slicks. If you want a sticky tire , you gotta go with at least 17". I love the look of bfg's on 15" ralleys but very little traction.

SWEET!!! Ahh the memories of my 'sleeper' '68 Camaro SS, a long, long time ago! Rusted out rear wheel wells but otherwise straight body! I owned it from 1978-1980 & I have been trolled so often when I describe the specs on, specifically, the engine. The motor had what was then called a 'full inch cam', which was very rare then. The original owner was a GM employee who had it built with that cam in it, but then the rest of the motor was a stock 350? I know, very odd. I 'spiced' it up a bit by popping it 30 over w/ 12:1 pistons, an aluminum Edelbrock Manifold & dropped in an M22 'vette tranny. I opted for a 12 bolt posi rear end w/ 4:11 gears, so it would be great off the line. It was. Power Automedia, my question, to avoid & appease the trolls is, are you familiar with this type of set up? I also put in what was then called a lift kit to keep that uni-body from twisting off the line. That worked quite well also! Did I enjoy making the boys cry? Yes, I certainly did! Finally, here's a hint gentlemen, when a girl picks you up & she has 5 pts. in her vehicle, do NOT ask her if she can 'drive a stick'! Ha! It happened! Rock on all!

I'll guess the "full inch" cam was a reference to a full inch of valve lift. It would be interesting to know the duration of lift, since that full inch would have to clear the piston dome, and to get 12:1 CR I'll bet there was a bit of dome or some cylinder heads with real small combustion chamber. It probably bled a lot of compression off at lower RPMs for loping around the street. Meanwhile, was the lift kit a spring setup or did you put the rear axle under the rear leaf spring or was it "slapper bars".

@@albertgaspar627 Greetings! What a delightful blast from the past, so to speak! And yes indeed, 'loping' is the perfect word for that idle! Had my tach set at 2G to idle, just to keep the damned 'thumper' funning. That was part of the whole sleeper thing 😉and being the proverbial blonde girl! I actually bought it from my big brother for, ready, $500.00! Glory! I did drop a valve early on which led to the rebuild with the 12:1 pistons and so on. Yes indeedy the lift kit was the spring setup and I am impressed that someone remembers those bastards! Have an outstanding day! Cheers!

@@maggierezac5820 the "old technology" is fun to play with still. I have an Olds 455 with variable duration lifters--they bleed off oil below 3,000 RPM, so my .490 lift/260 duration hydrualic camshaft really idles nice since its lost lift and therefore lost duration. But after 3,000 RPM, it runs like the cam grind that it is. I can actually leave the automatic transmission in top gear and it will pull clean away from idle to 5,500 RPM that way. Matched up to it is a GM torque convertor used in the early 1960's, called a Switch Pitch Torque Converter. With a push of a button, I can change from an 1,800 rpm stall speed to 3,300 rpm, and that allows me to have a "race" type torque converter for fun or a normal one for driving around town. Now transmissions have lock up torque converters to create a similar effect, but its a toy to play with. In the end of the 1970's, Bruce Crower came up with a cam design that held the intake valve open almost until detonation. It required a 14:1 compression ratio since it bled so much of the intake charge back into the intake manifold runners as the piston rose up to TDC. but it was intended to use the higher compression to obtain fuel economy via efficiency and make power. The result turned out to be not a lot of power at lower RPMs but sustainable power in the upper RPMs. Around that time engine builders were learning how to work with the lower compression ratios needed for low octane fuels, and so Bruce Crower's design disappeared--but i saw it once on a car and surprised its owner by knowing all about it :) I'm glad you had those memories, and I hope that soon you are able to get back into the "toy game". I got my Oldsmobile with the 455 engine for a song and dance as the owner was going to electric cars--there's some deals to be found out there.
