Blaze Thibaudeau is a 16-year-old boy from Gilbert, Arizona who went missing recently. He was found in Alaska with his mother and uncle. According to the news, his mother and uncle are under a doomsday "delusion" and believe in the imminent Second Coming of Christ. They see Blaze as a "Davidic servant" who plays a significant role in the Savior's return. Is this yet another example of Mormon fundamentalist extremism tied to Visions of Glory and Thom Harrison?

When I got divorced, the state of WA required that I take a parenting class. The entire point of the class was, "don't take your kid when you don't have custody, because that is kidnapping, and kidnapping is a crime." This gave me a good laugh at the time, but sadly it is a message that a lot of "adults" still don't understand.

When I was a child growing up in Alaska, my dad showed me a map and taught me how to walk with my siblings from ALASKA to Jackson County Missouri if the prophet said it was time to meet Jesus there. I remember him describing to me about getting to the Redwood trees…..etc. Can you imagine how much fear this kind of talk can cause a child?! Mormon Apocalyptic teachings used to be more prevalent in the mainstream church 30-40 years ago. I also believe my dad was a fan of Avraham Gileadi’s teachings. I remember hearing that name. My mom always said that prophets have told us that our food storage would someday be as important to us as the Ark was in Noah’s day. I think many people are becoming bored with Mormonism and are looking for something more exciting to believe in. There is quite a high you get from thinking about danger and Biblical level drama. Plus it feels really good to believe you are among the “Chosen” to have further light and knowledge about unknowable things. It’s way more exciting than being the nursery leader or cleaning the church building on Saturday night. This story is very disturbing…..and I don’t think this is the last “Mormon Prepper” incident we’re going to hear about. 😢 SAD!

I remember when 3-mile Island meltdown happened in 1979. I remember it vividly because I was 7 months pregnant with a 2 year old, and my in-laws were fleeing to Zion…independence, Missouri….and had hiking boots and prep packs and gas masks. They were going to drive from near Kirtland, Ohio to Missouri as far as they could, then would hike the rest of the way. I said I felt I couldn’t hike if needed so they said, you can stay and die (from nuclear meltdown) Weirdos. I’m still with my husband (he was not onboard with fleeing) who eventually fell away from his father and mother because of their crazy ideas. I never converted. I’m a unicorn (victim) in mormon circles and wear my horn with pride.

Similar thinking, though not Mormon, is on RU-vid all the time about Christians talking about God building a temple, the rapture, tribulation, Jesus being here any day, Trump being God's mouthpiece, the need to get rid of all liberals, etc.
@mariecastellano2001

Is there a connection behind the church supporting all these publications and people and the scurry to build all these temples all over the world? Are they spaced to provide refuges in the end times? Perhaps to stockpile supplies? Are they planning a new beginning? Those spires/steeples would guide any people on foot trying to get to them. Fun to speculate.

@@harley6222……My parents are both dead. My mother was…..mmmm, I can’t prove it, but I believe my psychopathic siblings had a hand in her passing. Sad. Even though my mom died after I left the church, I never told her that I did…..I didn’t want to cause her more stress. Deprogramming? That’s a long story. Our family had gone ‘inactive’ in the church, off and on, throughout the years….so I suppose that being away from it at times and getting information straight from the Bible and on our own, helped with being able to think for myself….and see a ‘different Christ’, than the one that the LDS church teaches. But even so, the ‘programming’ still ran deep….especially being born into it….not really having anything else to compare it to. Even when I went to other churches with my friends, something was still ‘off’ about going to those other churches….nothing felt right. And now I believe it’s because ANY large institution that sets itself up to be your ‘shell answer man’, is only there to enrich itself. I don’t trust these churches anymore….they play the religiosity game, to guilt and control the flock. We don’t need prophets anymore…..we can read the Bible for ourselves…..go before the throne of God boldly by ourselves. Sure, it’s fine if a few neighbors want to get together in one’s home and read the Bible together….and discuss what they believe it means…..or read it on your own. But I would be careful which church one trusts. The Bible says we are to be ‘cheerful givers’ now, not of duress…..not a ‘tithe’ anymore….but to pay only that which we can afford. The church was required to pay a tithe way back then, because all of the tribes received an inheritance, except for the tribe of Levi….which was the Levite priests. So they were supposed to pay a tithe for the Levite priests upkeep. We no longer have Levite priests to be ‘upkeeping’. As for any donations to say, pay for a churches new roof, etc, we are to pay ONLY that which we can afford….to be cheerful givers, but not of duress…..not a set tithe…..not 10% anymore……unless you can afford it. Forcing people to do otherwise, and claiming that they are not ‘worthy’ to go to the temple unless they pay a ‘full tithe’, is nothing but making people believe that they have to ‘buy’ their way into heaven. Christ said that what He has for us, can’t be bought with money….we don’t need money to qualify for heaven. The temple veil being rent in two when Christ was crucified, signified our not requiring a priest/prophet to go before the throne of God for us anymore…..WE are able to approach the throne of God for ourselves now! Big churches like to deceive people into thinking that we need them! They are in it for the $$$$. And in the case of the LDS church, they pay less towards humanitarian needs than the Catholic Charities and the Methodists do…..yet we have been hearing how rich the Mormon church is now. When I was a kid, I use to hear the adults say that the Mormon church ‘helps their own’…..HA! I’ve not seen evidence of that, even when we desperately needed it, and should have gotten it…..according to other people that had been helped. Seems there is a respecter of persons thing going on with them. The Gospel Topics Essays, that are on the church’s own website, was when I finally had the last straw! To find out that the things that people had been trying to tell the rest of us for years, and they got excommunicated for talking about, were true after all…..well…..that pissed me off! How can a church lie like that, and excommunicate the truth tellers for all of those years?! Disgusting!

John, in your learning of this prepper movement, you probably need to look at the past 35-year history of part of the Lewiston, Idaho stake. I moved to this area and bought land partly due to a dream had by a stake high counselor who knew Avraham. This area is pretty quiet now but we are 2--3 hours away from the white Christian nationalist center in North Idaho. Over my residence here, I have seen polygamy, prepping more than most places. A fellow(CES) in this general region wrote "Lying for the Lord". I've been at meetings with people who said they sat at the last supper, people who gave patriarchal blessings to friends, underground bunkers filled with supplies, preppers with 2 and 3 semi-trailers filled with food, study of tent cities, a ward where a counselor told people of John the Revellator readying his people to return to Missouri. I know people who followed Julie Rowe and I have been to two of other prophesying ladies' meetings. Tom Greene, famous in the polygamy movement who the State of Utah put in jail, held a meeting where a bishop's counselor was, at a residence of a fellow I encouraged to move to from Washington to this area, who became a polygamist (RFM interviewed his wife regarding her polygamy journey.) We had people marrying soulmates in sweat lodges. Mormons put on prepper meetings in fields. Guns and ammo storage like what is found in Parrette's manual is still a big issue in this area. We have a Tactical firearms training center and a nightime sniper training center, 1000 yard shoots, in our county. Mormon preppers really fit in here. Lots of dreams pertaining to the Mormon remnant in this area. Several of the original super preppers have either died or moved on. Not attending anymore, I'm not in the loop but I know a few who are on the edge and active so I know quite a bit. It grew so fast in our area in the 90's that the stake president predicted that a stake center would be in a large ward that did split but last year it combined again. There use to be 3 covenant communities in the hills, started by war hero Bo Gritz, where one could meet people like Randy Weaver of the Ruby Ridge FBI killing of wife Vicki while holding her baby. The new move-ins, have never heard of this stuff. I shock people when I tell them. Over the years I've helped one family build a fallout shelter filled with food but a lot got moldy. But still I will talk to someone like last weeks who would tell me of the signs of the Times (Mormon Doctrine teaching) that we know the Savior is soon coming. Conspiracy theories in and out of the wards abound and there are still people around who are like the father in the book, "Educated", the author you interviewed on MS. Bulk food is easy to purchase here. I live where you would call the sticks and there are 6 TBM's within a mile radius of me and I live 8 miles form our city of 700. When I first got here, I was in a priesthood quorum meeting when a Stake President ask why people moved here and may said because the spirit told them to. One fellow that said that was a Shone-Piute, RM and student at BYU. The SP told him he came for the wrong reason. Another fellow stood up the the SP and said, "You, sir are not a lawyer in a court and you have no right to talk this way. The SP told this high priest to sit down and shut up, And the HP said, "I will not sit down and shut up." And he didn't. I watched in a county commissioner meeting where an inactive LDS through a noose in front of the leaders and said, "We don't want no building codes in this county." And we still don't have them. I remember writing letter to my friends in Washington talking about moving to the Wild West. There was a lot more happening over the time 1990 until now. But our ward is still a "last days" ward and LDS move here because of the presumed designation. Two weeks ago, on the site of the former covenant communities, "Almost Heaven", "Almost Heaven II", and "Shenandoah", I discovered a fairly large MAGA camp. I was getting computer repair done, and the wife of the repairman, either former or inactive LDS wife told me that she and her hubby are MAGA, Lots of junk and trailers. Most people coming here in the 90's were from Utah, one neighbor was involved with the Salt Lake JS letters and later killings. Many radical LDS moved here. Your interviews with preppers, while interesting, are mild compared to what has gone on here.

@@snookyms Things are a lot calmer now. Today in the regions big town of 32,000, for ex-rays on my knees, I talked to a patient from Riggins who daughter lives in Bonner County and he says that those north counties are "hard core". Conservative white Christian nationalists are strong there. And the realtors in that region put out lots of videos advertising those qualities and why people should move there. There used to be one ward in that stake that people in the stake presidency and many parts of Utah talked about. I live in that ward's boundary but I haven't attend for a long time. That's how I can tell you a little of what happened. But even from what I told you, as a non-conservative, I wouldn't want to live any place else. People don't openly carry guns and I don't find a lot of hate like in the rest of America.

The scariest part about what you wrote, those members in that area represent the true nature and intentions of the Church HQ, regardless of all the PR spinning they do. This reveals that the Church is just waiting for a weak point in societal upheaval to restore polygamy, racism, and every other abomination from the times of spiritual blindness. Keep writing comments like you wrote everywhere you can write them. People really need to know.

I have a theory that members are growing impatient waiting for the second coming and the apocalypse. Instead of shrugging their shoulders and saying I guess I was wrong. They double down and take action or do things to perpetuate it. They need to maintain the idea that they are special and smarter than others. Mix that with current events that stoke fear and we will continue to see more cases of preppers taking more aggressive action. My fear is that we will see it escalate to a level of Branch Davidians, Or Heaven's Gate.

It's called accelerationism and it is indeed very dangerous. In doomsday cults, many people just move the goal posts if doomsday doesn't come. They accept the explanation that they interpreted something wrong or didn't pray enough and because of that doomsday will come on a later day. But there are always a few very extreme people who are getting so disappointed when doomsday doesn't come that they start to believe that it is their calling to bring about the end of the world. Another example for that would be the Aum Shinrikyo cult in Japan who did the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway.

As one who was a part of several groups like this, if the church denounced it it wouldn’t stop it for a second. These groups feel extremely strongly that their knowledge and beliefs are extra special and that it is a higher level of knowledge than the church leaders have… or if the church leaders do have the knowledge, they aren’t brave enough to stand up and say it (or they aren’t telling the masses because the masses aren’t ready to hear it). Thank you a lot for this episode. I am not mormon. I am not even American, so this system of beliefs is totally foreign for me. I was following the Daybell case a lot, and tried to understand the religious aspects of it too. As soon as I heard about this new case I knew that there was some connections. However, it is really hard to find any comprehensive information about the mormon ideas that are not some mormon preachings. So I was struggling to get this "davidic servant" idea. So basically, what this "Isaiah expert" said was that davidic servant would be someone least expected... so how everyone is thinking that it would be some American mormon... going on by their own patterns it should be some Buddhist monk from Tybet. The big problem here seems to be "main character syndrome". They all believe that end times would happen in their lives, start in their backyard and they personally met the messiah or they are the ones. People should learn more about statistics instead of memorising scriptures. This would humble them.

Our doomsday prophets were the likes of Paisley and Lindsay that drove those generations insane with 'visions of glory'. The internet has increased the infection exponentially. Thanks for doing this. I appreciate you all drawing the connection to Avraham Gileadi as he is a person I was unaware of, so him being a thread through all of these cases is interesting. I read Elizabeth Smart's book years ago and she talks about Mitchell's belief system a little bit. I just chalked it up to him being a kook at the time and being an SO looking to justify his crimes. But I think it's important to draw the connection that he didn't invent his beliefs or get them from thin air. As you said, you are looking to get at the root of why these crimes happen, and unless we understand the belief systems driving these people, that's impossible. Thanks too, for giving more context to the Book of Isaiah stuff; that wasn't something I was familiar with as it wasn't something discussed really in the mainstream protestant circles I was raised in. Something I was thinking about as you all were talking is that dreams and visions isn't just specific to Mormonism either. The idea is all through the Bible. I thought of Joseph having a vision/dream that he should claim Mary's child as his. Jesus himself came out of a long tradition of folks claiming to be the Messiah. The canon of the Bible makes it pretty clear he believed he was living in the end times and perhaps thought of himself as a doomsday prophet. All that is to say, the concept is baked in to not just Mormonism, but Christianity as a whole and there needs to be a reckoning with that. John, I noticed that having watched you for a good while now that you are always willing to platform women and give us space to promote our work and that you really embrace a collaborative and community spirit. Just wanted to say I see it and I appreciate you. It's low key healing to witness. The Christian tradition and society in general is still so patriarchal and too many men are more than willing to claim women's work without credit.

I live in Idaho. I have never talked to a person for the first time who has ever heard of Mormon Stories. Never heard of AVOW.. Most have never heard of the killing in Rexburg. Members are kept so busy that they never hear anything. Nothing unusual. Most Christians think their faith is growing in America when it is on the decline. NO one I talk to knows about the 60% of Americans who want nothing to do with organized religion.

I was in the supermarket last year at the self checkout (in Wellington, New Zealand) next to a Japanese man when a Maori woman came up to him and said, "You are such a beautiful person. Like the Maori people the Japanese are part of the twelve tribes of Israel. We are all just so beautiful." I have no objection to the idea of beauty among races but I was very confused by the fact that these two specific ethnicities were two of the twelve tribes of Israel when there are so many ethnicities in the world. I actually googled it when I got home and was none the wiser.

Sounds like Ruby and Jodi were doing the same thing with the trafficking prescription drugs from Mexico for emergency kits, bags of cash ready, revelations from god and whatever other nonsense they believed. I agree that someone needs to do something about all the crazies who go to extremes with the doomsday nonsense. I had no idea there were so many other cases where people had went to such extremes. Definitely seems to be a widespread problem.

Milestones like Jr. High, Senior High, graduations, and college! Then, the hardest part... what Jenny wants to say to her kids at their weddings. Babies too!! Tell them your experience of their birth and how to work through hard times. I hope she records just what she wants them to know. It keeps her in their lives. Jenny is the bravest person I know.❤❤❤

Anyone can get swept up into an emotionally charged (in what they are led to believe is a life or death situation) and think they are doing the right thing. Thank you John for bringing up the racism inherent in the appropriation of the tribes of Isreal and the idea that a non-Jew would be the one to reunite Isreal, whatever that means. I'm Jewish (and before anyone says anything, I do not condone anything that Isreal is doing, I'm not a Zionist) and also my degrees in Medieval and Ancient Histories mean that I have studied an excessive amount of Abramhamic scripture, religious history and religious practices. When I first started researching Mormonism from a secular angle, I was just shocked by the insanity of Joseph Smith's writings in regard to Judaism. I was explaining it to a Rabbi once and he said "So Joseph Smith wrote Biblical fan fiction?" Lol! I'm sorry if that is upsetting to current LDS members, but that is how it appears to some outsiders. But it was so disturbing to read and hear all this discussion about the tribes of Isreal and how somehow Mormons place themselves in the place of these supposedly lost tribes. First because Judaism is not simply a religion, it is an ethnicity in some ways. When you are born Jewish, you will always be Jewish, even in you are an atheist or you convert to another religion. And if you convert with no blood relation, you are only a religious Jew, it does not count the same way as those born into it. So here is my issue, no matter what Joseph Smith wrote, no one who converts to the LDS Church could ever be part of the tribes of Isreal unless they were born Jewish. It is preposterous to think otherwise! And before anyone comes to me saying that Jews are missing things that Joseph Smith completed, that's not how Judaism works, we are not like Christians and there were so many Jewish texts that were not in the Christian Bible and were not available to Joseph Smith, so yeah he did not have the full picture of Judaism and his writings make that extremely evident.

I wonder if, during the Lori Vallow trial and all of the publicity regarding Lori and Chad, Spring ever had the self-awareness to see herself going down the same path? I think this situation demonstrates that the followers of this entire faction still don't see that they are the deceived, that Mormons have been warned about. I think Spring continued, possibly in secret, her relationship with Julie Rowe. I do think her husband knew more than what he shared in his video. The same with Abi's husband. Also, Lauren made a comment about Eric Smith going down another path- I'd love to hear what is happening with him now.

@@athanksgivingbaby570 The Mormon Church doesn't need change. The entire church was built on the word of a false prophet and a man who married 30-40 women. One as young as 14 and many others who were already married to faithful members of the church and who were on missions. He gave many false prophesies. The Bible teaches that if a man who claims to be a prophet of God gives even one false prophesy, it means he is a false prophet. Joseph Smith gave MANY false prophesies. The entire church is a cult based on lies and no one should stay in it. The only "change" it needs is to get rid of anything Joseph Smith ever taught because he was a liar and a pervert.

The main thing that bothers me, *this young man did not ask for his picture, life, privacy to be blasted all over the news and internet!* I wish all people would have the decency to ask permission to include pictures/names of anyone over 18 who is a victim. Any person under the age of 18 should not have their picture/name plastered all over the internet. This is not an attack on the story or the creators/channel, instead it is made in hopes we can educate on these issues but also start really choosing to protect the innocent/victims. He is barely starting out in the world and instead of his field plays being his shining example of self... he receives this across the video world?! *We must choose to do better as a whole society!* ❤😢😮
