In this video, we will animate our head-turn actions, set up action constraints, and their control bone. We’ll also add some improvements to the rig and finally create mouth shapes, using a time offset modifier, to prepare us for lip-syncing.
This video is one of four, detailing the character’s creation, from sketch to model, to rig and finally covering my animation workflow.
I have added English subtitles. If you would be willing to translate these into a different language, I would be happy to publish these to help others follow along. If you are able to help, contact me via the email in the 'about' tab: www.youtube.co...

This is an amazing Tutorial. Following your steps I noticed, that the Ctrl_brow move the three brow sub_controls, but it don`t affect the wrinkels of the forehead, such as the sub controls do. In your provided file, the same issue appears. But in the third video, I can see, that you move the master control and the wrikel are affected. Couldn`t find the point, where you explained how to connect these bones to get the right effect.
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 4 года назад
Originally, when I added the copy location constraints to the MCH bones, I used "Local space with parent". This meant that the base eyebrow bone also moved the glabellar lines, but when I rotated the base head bone, the wrinkles moved strangely. So I changed the parameters to use just "local space". This means that the base eyebrow bone only affects the brow. I mentioned this in part 2: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dXLs5lVX0ys.html This was my mistake and I hadn't noticed the problem until halfway through part 3. Hi Sketchy Squirrel, Thanks a lot for making this video series. It has been a great help to learn rigging. Could you please find out where I am going wrong : After assigning mouth poses (with grease pencil) for vocals, the character's mouth is not rotated as per the head movement when I animate. Maybe it's because I haven't parented these new strokes of vocal poses with the control mouth bone. Can you help how to rectify this problem?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
Hi, I'm so glad that you found it helpful. Regarding your question, you're absolutely right. To assign the new shapes to vertex group, enter edit mode select all of the points on the first frame, and press assign on the vertex group, then go to the next frame, select the points and press assign. Just repeat this until all of the points, on all of the frames are assigned to the vertex group. I hope that this helps, :)

@@SketchySquirrel thanks a lot for quick response! I assigned the vertices to vertex groups, but still when I rotate the head, the mouth doesn't follow along. I am facing one other problem, I created an animation in action editor using rhubarb lipsync, but the rendered animation does not include the lip movements, whereas they are played when I play the animation in viewport. Maybe it will be better if you could look at my blender file. Here is the link : drive.google.com/file/d/1ZYgG1WKwCXc3DMsIIF8-kHnLfhDtmLWj/view?usp=sharing Thank you so much in advance!!
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
WOW Vimal, you've done an amazing job. I had a look at your file and it took me a while to figure out, but I figured it out eventually. Under the vertex group panel, under the assign button, there is a weight slider. This defines how strongly you want to assign the vertices to the bone. This is helpful if you're trying to make a smooth transition between two bones. In your case you had the weight set to 0. this means that when you assigned the vertices to the bone, you assigned them with a weight of 0. to fix this just slide the weight back up to one and reassign all of the vertices. I hope that this helps, As for your issue regarding the differences between the rendered version and the viewport, I don't know what the problem was, as I wasn't able to recreate it. Thanks for following along and for showing me your work. :)

@@SketchySquirrel thanks a lot!! it's really so nice of you to have taken time to study my file and work out the solution :) Meanwhile, those 10 frames in grease pencil for vocal poses are superceding the dopesheet action editor poses that I am assigning to the mouth of the character (which are visible in viewport as I told earlier but not rendered in the final result). Please do share if you find an explanation for this. Also, looking forward to more amazing content from you, thank you and keep uploading! Cheers!

Found the style I was looking for, however I see this is 3 years old, would you be able to to it faster now with grease pencil on 3d version of the face? I'm coming from 100% 2d animation software with some 3D camera capabilities, to brand new to Blender, and this style is what I want, however, I'm seeing the updates allows one to make a 3D version with grease pencil drawing on the 3D version, with other aspects of newer blender versions. How would you approach this now with updates in blender?

Thank you for the tutorials; these are great! I had a question, though: do you think blender is at a point, with grease pencil, where it is capable of fully replacing software like Toon Boom? I've been reluctant on pulling the trigger, with TB being over $2k; and your tutorials gave me a bit of hope for what is achievable with the freeware. My main concern is time saving - does Blender require more investment in work required to achieve similar results? Thanks again and good luck

@@ΖΕΝοΕΠΑΜΙΤΗΣ I suppose, but you also gain a benefit of much more flexible animation in 3D space; not even mentioning all other things that Blender has to offer. See, I was contemplating a project that combines 2D animation with 3D backgrounds; my hope was that - if Blender is, let's say, 80% as good as TB for 2D - I'd be able to fully substitute the program. I just worry about spending a lot of time trying to learn a new program only to find that it does not work for me. Unfortunately there is not that much info on grease pencil, especially compared to the amount of 3D tutorials for Blender. This series is an absolute life saver; but I wish there was more stuff like this available for beginners - to at least have a better idea of what to expect
@ΖΕΝοΕΠΑΜΙΤΗΣ

@@andreymusallyamov2951 tbh i like blender, i love it. What i hate though is that toon boom workspaces feel so great for me. Some features of toonboom cant work them around in my head to bring them in blender. I like envelope rigging in toonboom, its so fast, but in blender trying to achieve envelope rigging sucks balls, takes too much time. Another thing, is that having multple bones in blender is so much easier and feels more straightforward than toonboom, where you have to switch drawings to put another deformer. Compositing is stronger too. Man the last 5 days, i am fighting inside all day along in my head........ , about if i have to make the transition... Also SVG support... i dnt KNOWWWW what to do..xDDDDDDDD

@andreymusallyamov2951 4 года назад
@@ΖΕΝοΕΠΑΜΙΤΗΣ I feel your pain. I get that Blender is free and is good for a lot more purposes than TB, but to me it's the same argument as Blender vs ZBrush: yes, you can do most things in Blender - but ZB is simply a nicer tool to use. The problem is also that 2D animation is a niche thing. While 3D modeling is used in a wide variety of fields, 2D is a very narrow in it's utilization; hence the lack of tool options 😔 hopefully this will change with Blender taking the initiative
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 4 года назад
At this stage, it isn't a direct replacement for software like TB Harmony or Moho Pro, however the more we use GP in this way, the more we will drive its development in this direction. The power that Blender offers allows us to add functionality ourselves, I can already see how writing a few python scripts could dramatically simplify the current workflow. Regarding time taken, once you get into the groove and you fully understand the process, it's surprisingly efficient, even with the current limitations. You get to know your software well, TB Harmony has amazing strengths but advanced rigging can seem complicated to the uninformed. I'm a Moho Pro user and enjoy the simplicity of it's smart bone techniques, however, with simplicity you lose some versatility. In the end, Grease Pencil, backed with the power of 3D Blender and the knowledge base online will be amazing. It's not quite there yet, but with user support and interest from the developers, it soon will be. I am quietly confident that Blender will continue developing in this area, and I'm personally excited to see what the future holds for Grease Pencil.

Hi Jamie. It all depends on what you're creating. If you need to make a tv show or web show in an small amount of time, moho would brobably be better. On the other hand if you need a more in depth rigging system, or you want to easily combine 2d animation woth 3d, then Blender is probably better. Hi Lina, this is a pretty common issue, but it's really simple to fix. In the grease pencil object for the mouth, we've assigned the points, in edit mode, to a vertex group, but the points on the other frames are separate, so if you go to each frame select all of the points and assign them to the vertex group as well. Hope that helps, and thanks for the comment. :)

When I try to move the eyebrow control bone to the left, the section of eyebrow gets squished and inflates in the Y axis as if it's maintaining it's volume, but when you do it, it stays the same thickness. The lattice does not have 'preserve volume' checked in the modifier section. Edit: When I move the forehead bones, it affects the lattice without the squash happening. I'm not sure what is different between the eyebrow lattice and the forehead lattice, can't seem to find anything different in the controls. I'm not sure how to fix this

OK, I don't understand why, but here is how I fixed it. The horizontal deformation bones of both the forehead and the eyebrow had , in the Stretch To constraint, a setting of Maintain Volume Z. Only when i made it None for the eyebrow bones would it stop being naughty. I don't know why it would affect the different bones differently even though they were set the same. Hi there, in the stretch to constraint, there is a setting called "maintain volume" by default it's set to XZ but if you set it to 'none' then it will behave as expected. I hope this is helpful, let me know if you have any more questions :D

When I try to setup the new action, when i move the keyframe it is still affecting the eyes still even though I setup a new action and gave it a new name (head turn L). What's wrong here?
@ldmdesign5610
@ldmdesign5610 9 месяцев назад
If anyone encountered this, just select the bones and make sure to delete all the keyframes once you are in the new action. Not sure why a new action would retain keyframes from a previous action but I had to delete them manually like this.

Hello again, there is no add driver option when i write click on objects time offset modifiers frame offset. Add drivers option is available on time offset modifiers influence tabs pass option. But nothing happens when you change the pass

I'm glad that you figured it out. I didn't know that keyframes removed the driver option, thanks for letting me know :)

What graphics card do you recommend? For this
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
I'm not an expert on the subject, I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, but this isn't necessary for 2D animations, from what I can tell, Grease Pencil animations will still render in a moderate amount of time with only the CPU. Hope this helps. :)

How did you combine the head looking actions? (left, left-up, right-down ..vs) I think this part is missing in these tutorial
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 3 года назад
Hi Ahmet, sorry for the late reply. I combined the the different actions, by setting the target for each of the action constraints to a single control bone, and assigning different movements of the bone to control the different actions, this is how moving the control left plays the turn left action while moving up plays the tilt up action, and therefore when we move the control up and to the left, it automatically calculated a mid point between the two. I'm sorry if this wasn't explained clearly enough in the video. Thank you for your feedback, I'll try to do better in the future.

Hello, I dont know if you will see this. But currently I am following your tutorials and I am having trouble in the mouth slider. I did what you did in the video but the bone doesn't work in chainging the mouth shape to the next frame. It only shows the first frame mouth shape and the last mouth shape. Please heeelp! 😵😵😵😵

Hi there, I can't think of anything of the top of my head, however if you send me your blender file through the business email on my channel, ru-vid.comabout I'll see what I can do. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to be very helpful right now. :)

Hey I NEED HELP! After opening my project from yesterday, the colors are totally F*d up, almost everything is white now! I made several backups but every blendfile has the same issue! Any idea how that could happen and how to fix it?

Hi Dennis. I may have had the same problem when I updated Blender. Did you do that recently? if so try opening it in the previous version. Hope that helps.

Can i make my own sketch and directly apply this rig it?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 4 года назад
Absolutely. I would recommend following along so you can understand how it works, but if you're on a tight schedule, or you don't feel comfortable with the current level of complexity, you can draw your own character and apply it to the same rig.

@@XpressStudiosforyou In some ways I already have. If you download my rig from the description, replace all of the GP objects with your own drawing, and follow how I attached them to the Deformation Bones in Part 2 of this series, you should be able to figure it out. I hope this helps.
