Dr. Neal Guymon discusses the different types of Blepharitis. Blepharitis is the inflammation the eyelids, usually caused by an overgrowth of bacteria and bacteria toxins on the eyelid. Anterior Blepharitis usually sits at the base of the eyelashes. Posterior Blepharitis happens on the back of the eyelid and the oil glands (meibomian glands). This is a super common condition, and is usually chronic and can be sometimes hard to get rid of. You will learn 3 ways on how to treat blepharitis at home, and the best cleaning tips for your eyelids.

What treatment has worked best for your blepharitis?

Hi. I have had blepharitis for over 18months now. I have been tested for various other eye conditions but they have all come back negative and always told it is just blepharitis. I do warm compress 2x daily Artificial tears as and when Hypochlorous acid to clean my eyes I have had 2 courses of doxycycline for two 3 month periods and as soon as I’ve stopped I’ve had a flare up. I have a flare up of blepharitis every month and it is really effecting my life. Any tips welcomed.

@@tamaramorris9187 Have you been check for demodex? There some lid wipes or eyelid cleansers that have tea tree oil in them that help for demodex. But you have to be careful with tea tree oil and not leave it on...studies are coming out that if you leave it on and don't wash it off it could negatively impact your oil glands.

Yes, It’s a mite called Demodex. I’m surprised u didn’t inform ur viewers about these mites. Everyone has them. Sometimes the mites just overpopulate if ur not getting enough rest, sleep, good nutrition, etc. These mites eat the hair follicles. Similar to mange in cats or dogs. These mites can spread to the scalp and thin ur hair out. The bugs love eating the follicle. The males stay on the surface, and the females stay by the follicle to eat and lay their eggs. I’m glad ur going to do a video on demodex. I’ll look for it. Everyone needs to know about this. No one is telling them.

Just got prescribed PROTOPIC. Only thing that actually helped. Dry eye is better too. Five years of warm compresses, hydroclorous spray, eyelid cleaning scrubs, and more actually brought on the skin irritation. Can’t believe it’s taken so long. Hoping my eyelashes grow back🙏. Meanwhile, steroid drops used in the recent past have caused cataracts. At age 66 1/2. Dermatologist was aghast when I told her I used tea tree oil Eyelid Scrubs!!! My ophthalmologist, allergist, and dermatologist need to get together and educate each other on all these conditions in and around the eye imo.

Dr Guymon: Thanks for the videos. I've got blepharitis on both eyes and it feels like it is causing some blurred vision. I recently went in to an ophthalmologist and got a prescription for glasses. My left eye was 20/30 and my right eye was about 20/80. I got some glasses. (I had not worn glasses before.) But with my new glasses the vision in my right eye is sharp but the left eye seems a little blurred. I'm wondering if the blepharitis might have prevented an accurate prescription?? (The doc recommended Ocusoft lid scrubs and I have been using them about 10 days.)
@DrEyeGuy
@DrEyeGuy 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment Brian. That's a tricky question, because there could be a number of things that could be the reason for the blurred left eye with glasses. It's possible the blepharitis could have prevented an accurate prescription. If there was a significant amount of inflammation as well as dryness, that can make it tricky to nail down the rx accurately. If you were seen recently, I bet you could call your eye doctor and get in to recheck your prescription. I know many offices you can get a recheck if you feel like it's not exactly right.

I never had an issue until I started using a specific brand sunscreen on my eyelids then I woke up with postanterior issues went to urgent care in the first 2 days and got drops antibiotics and oral antibiotics (my eye was nearly swollen shut) then I started doing the compresses yesterday with the qtip massage (rolling the qtip down) I also have a cleansing oil that I put on the qtip. After the compress when I do the qtip massage roll I get little white dots on the margin of my eyelids. I use the qtip with the cleansing oil to wipe away the little drops of oil that comes out. I haven't been wearing my contacts either.... but I have friends coming into town tomorrow and we're going to a festival over the weekend. How long does it take to clear up once you start antibiotics, along with expressing the glands with the qtip rolls?
@DrEyeGuy
@DrEyeGuy 2 года назад
Hi, great question. If you are dealing with an infection and using antibiotics you should hopefully see big improvement within 3 days....thats if the antibiotics are working. If you have thicker oil in your oil glands, that could take longer to change up unfortunately. I'll cross my fingers for you.

I have it very bad, when I look down my lower lids it’s all red and inflamed. I do the compresses daily, I use the tea tree item you showed, and I take omega oil as per my optometrist. But to no avail. I’m so scared this will be permanent. My eyes are deeply itchy every day and I find myself rubbing extremely hard when it gets bad. I guess what I can do more is to do the scrubs twice a day but my issue seems to be way more posterior. Is there a chance this will go away after a few years? Especially if I up my care?
@DrEyeGuy
@DrEyeGuy 3 года назад
Yes, the goal is to try and get it to a level that you can maintain it. It can be common for people to go through periods in their life when the blepharitis is worse. You could try upping your care. You might be a good candidate for Blephex, to try and remove all of the biofilm from your lids, or maybe invest in Nulids, a more advanced treatment for your lids... but it can be a little pricey.

So Blepharitis can also be caused by demodex mites...I have suffered for years and year with this...tried all those remedies; all different kinds of scrubs...Ocuscrub etc. HOWEVER...Cliradex is the BEST all around scrub. It does have the tea tree scrub and made such a difference. I used to spend 20 minutes cleaning, massaging, soaking and only ended up with swollen lids. I got Cliradex and Bingo! Huge difference. I use it every few days a week.

A few years ago I would occasionally get a very swollen eyelid at the eyelash line. Extremely Painful, grating on my eye and constantly watering. Tried pain meds, didn't work at all, even after being seen by an urgent care provider. Laugh if you want, but I know this solution came from the Lord, or how else would I have thought of it? Nasal sprays shrink the swollen membranes inside the nose in order for one to breathe easier. So I squirted some on a cotton swab, applied to my swollen eyelid. Soon the swelling greatly reduced the pain and intense watering went away, Anecdotal, true, but it worked EVERY TIME to reduce the swelling, pain and watering.

I washed my eyes with a candida soap. It stung a little. But immediately after my lids felt a lot better. Then I wash my pillows & change bedding. I think that will help a lot. Our pillows & sheets hold a lot of yucky things in them. More so pillows. I change sheets a lot but most of us don't wash pillows as often as we should. If it keeps returning, get allergy covers for the pillows, then put your pillow case over that. Bet that's the cause if it keeps returning.

What has helped the most is just daily cleaning with tea tree oil and now I’m using hypochlorous spray also. I’ve noticed too that when i sleep well I wake up with less Inflamation and also severe stress makes it worse and may even be the reason I got it to begin with. I've had Bleph since Mid 20's I'm now almost 40 ... I've tried everything, warm compresses, cold, cleaning with cue tips etc etc Restaisis eye drops (spelling) all the over the counter eye drops ... Edit: why do cold compresses work better for me than warm? Best thing works for me is FML eye drops that are precscribed by doctors/specialist ... My GP no longer can give me these as they aren't meant for long-term. I'll have to go back to see my specialist and see what else they can do. I have red eyelids and on the eyelid margin alsways red. People almost always say "Oh your eyes are Red" and feel like I have to explain to them. I'm tired of doing this and now I just say YEH - no longer give a shit about explaining to people all the time. So over this BLEPH ... They need a treatment soon

Thanks for this comment... this highlights are people can struggle from this condition. It sounds like you have an inflammation cycle for sure, especially since a steroid drops helps with the symptoms. That's also probably why the cold compresses help more, as it decreases the inflammation. Diet might be related. You could look into more higher end treatment, like blephex or nulids as well.
