You guys got it twisted .. yes it's about gangs, and prison but the reason your not satisfied with the prison and gang content.. is because the movie is more about the brother hood... it's more about how two half brothers (Paco and cruz) and a cousin (miclo) grew up in East La and went there separate ways as they grew up....thats why it end just like that.... the movie was more about the love/hate they had towards eachother that's why at the end they had that talk........this movie is the most beautiful gang movie out there....every Mexican/Hispanic kid..even other races that grew up in southern California can relate to that movie or characters in that movie...its the best

This review was like a Christmas present for me. I grew up in East LA and the scenes outside of the prison were literally filmed in my neighborhood a block away from my parent's home. I remember seeing them filming the scenes where the three main actors are driving in the car the newly painted car with the drawing of the woman on the hood of the car. I remember seeing them film a few other scenes so it's really cool seeing this review. There's actually 2 different versions of the movie. The theatrical cut and the extended director's cut which you guys saw. It shared a similar fate as "The Warriors" where real gang members were showing up to watch the movie and would start fighting in the theater so the movie was pulled. But I agree with you guys, too long at over 3 hours and the happy "Hollywood Ending" just doesn't work. Really cool review guys!

Blood In Blood Out is one of the unsung masterpieces of the 90's !

This film is actually a cult classic. It's one of the first films that captures the Mexican American street culture.

This movie is basically the same inspiration as "American Me" (which is much grittier). Both were inspired by the infamous prison gang the Mexican Mafia (AKA La Eme). American Me specifically states that it is about the Mexican Mafia and mentions the other two big prison gangs like the Aryan Brotherhood and Black Guerrilla Family, but Blood In, Blood Out uses a fictional name for these gangs. Funny enough, both take liberties with facts, but the facts that are left out of one movie are usually present in another.

Big Al wasn't doing anything sexual with the gaurd, he was giving him money to smuggle out/in to the prison because they were running the illegal gambling. This movie is uber Americana. If you grew up in the US, you would've liked this movie much more than you did. You guys rock 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 Now I have to get back to killing all the characters in Until Dawn cause I need that trophy!!!

A great review, my old cousin & room mate Geoff Rivas is in this film, I remember him rehearsing for it day & night. I remember living & working in LA when this was made & living through the riots then, I'm not surprised it was altered for that time & place. It was a great film at the time it came out, you really can't compare the grittier newer gang films to it any more than you can other genres, you have to see it through the eyes of the times.

There’s an awesome but intimate little documentary about the film Damien chapa made called ‘Miklo’- it’s over an hour and free on RU-vid - you guys would like it. Talks about the Disney stuff, riots and release. Damien chapa has a lot more in common with miklo than I thought.

You keep saying "Latino" but the movie is actually specifically about Chicano culture in East LA. Chicano being first generation mexican american.

Another film came out one year before this one (1992) called "American Me". The prison segments are almost identical.

Hours movie could have lasted 2 days and I would still rewatch it

Of course this movie is not going to be like Boyz in the Hood or Menace to Society. Those movies had huge budgets, big name actors, and a lot of marketing! Of course, what they (the reviewers) think and feel about a movie is not wrong, just something that they cannot relate to. P.S. This movie is good and I think that Cruz, Big Al, and Chuey (the actors who played them) did a great job and were the standouts. Paco (who is NOTHING like Benjamin Bratt) & Miklo (Damien Chappa isn't too far from this character in real life) did pretty good as well. There were a bunch of really good supporting, smaller roles as well. I liked Danny Trejo, Billy Bob, the prison guard (Mike Genovese), Rollie McCann (Biff from Back to the Future), Ving Rhames, and a few others.

Just a couple corrections: It's BGA (Black Guerrilla Army) not BGE; It was not Miklo who betrayed Montana, but Magic...who is explaining to Miklo that that was Onda needed to do; Miklo and Paco are cousins....Paco and Cruz are step-brothers...their little brother is half brother to both; the text at the end is reference to San Quentin and its manner of allowing prisoners to walk around freely on their cell block; the screenwriter (who also portrays one of the La Onda members) wrote this based on his own life so it does come from an authentic place

@13:15 & 13:35 Ironic how it was Miklo who intervened & stopped Paco from squeezing the trigger... only for Miklo to shot and kill Spider mere moments after he had pretty much saved his life. As Paco put it: "Life's a risk, Carnal".

I like this movie now but as a kid (7 to be exact) this movie actually scared me because of how violent it was to me. Plus seeing that kid die from the needle freaked me the fuck out

When I first watched Blood in, Blood out it was on VHS. That version edited out a ton of the material that is on the DVD. The VHS version flows so much better but some of the additional scenes on the DVD add some detail. They need to release that version because I sick of watching all those extra scenes.

I thought that the fire hydrant drop was pretty brutal. That and the white teen growing into a latino man are the only two things that stuck from watching this way back when.

Cruz and Paco are both Juanito’s brothers because he’s the child of Paco’s Mom and Cruz’s Dad. And Miklo is their cousin because his mom and Paco’s Mom are sisters.

Great review big fan of this film, all the scenes in San Quentin were awesome! Didn't they kind of make remake on this? But wasn't as good...

the guy who wrote this movie is the guy who plays the second-in-command to Montana and how he put it is that he's the one that wrote this movie he was in prison and he is all three of these characters and right now he is and Paco's State of Mind to where he is a better person he's a person that has wept but has never wept before in his life he is humbled and I think the ending of the movie indicates how you want the movie to end I can see Paco quitting the force I can see him working for his family and him reuniting with miklo later on down the line or Miklo get killed and Paco and Cruz learned from equal ml mistakes of course

I love this movie this way we have always been one of my favorites but I do agree with you guys on one think that it is much longer than what it needs to be there is a theatrical cut is what I grew up with and if I remember correctly instead of it being 3 hours it is about two and a half hours maybe you could find the theatrical version of it is the way that I've always understood it is at Blood In Blood Out is the theatrical version and the one that just says Bound by Honor was the director's cut

not epic? viva vatos locos! it for sure have some larger than life moments, or atleast larger in the characters perspective Miklos is corny, but some gangsters are actually quite corny IRL, wannabe gangsters and so on

Great movie, you hit the nail on the head about the length. Even as a kid first watching this when it came out I thought it was wayyy too long and the 3rd acts pace is just dragged out painfully long. They could of edited 40-45 minutes out of this and it would have made it 5 stars for me. Just too many jail sequences that weren't needed but this is still a amazing picture.

You guys missed the point if it had the gang and prison violence but that wasn't the point each character had their development and became the opposite of the original one Paco was a gangster the leader and would be nothing in life but that change after he join the military and turned his life around Miklo wanted to fit some where and have a "home" so in the end he became the leader with power and belongs somewhere now he used his brains to take over Cruz was an inspiration he was gonna go some where but he got addicted to drugs and let that ruin him and his relationships so at the end all he wanted was for paco to forgive himself as he did when he went to Juanito grave and reconnected with his family It's about brotherhood and finding an Identity a place to belong and that's what you guys missed in all that
