I for one, am happy to see this review as, I was contemplating whether to purchase this today.

There absolutely is something wrong with it, because they purposefully didn't review it, because of the state it was in. They clearly didn't want to create a negative ripple for potential sales for 505 Games, because it could have hurt their relationship in the future. This effectively removes any integrity Nintendo Life has and if you can't see that you're blind. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is in no way a 7/10 on the Nintendo Switch and anyone who owns it knows this as well, unless they're in denial. This is an abysmal port that deserved to have been put on display for what it was, not hidden for a month and then quietly brushed under the carpet. Nintendo Life is looking out for the publisher, not their loyal fan base and that's a shame.

I just finished Spiderman on the PS4, had it since day one...I have a back log, I played this game but let it sit so I can finish so late quality reviews are fine. I still have not got back to God of war, most games I play i take my time...not like the crazy people who finish the game in one night...those people need to get a life.

Im playing this game for the first time now and the slow down can be absurd at times. Im assuming that the issues were never resolved then?

@@montruo000000007 apparently not. I haven't played it since TBH, I moved on to other games and this fell down the backlog list waiting for a better version.

Unfortunate. Saw this game was 20% off but I think I'll wait until it's 50% off if the Switch version really is that bad

Got it in the mail while I was watching the switch reviews. Never opened it and wrote "return to sender" on it. Haven't bothered to pick up the ps4 verion instead. Hype is just over for me and I'll buy for cheap someday.

If a slightly inconsistent framerate and lesser graphical quality doesn't bother you, then the Switch port is still fine. But from what I've heard, the PC version has next to no issues at all.

@@DJdeliverance definitely skip it on switch. If you have any other console or a pc get it there. It’s WAY higher resolution, better frame rate, and no input lag. And it’s not just a matter of resolution. They completely left stuff out on the switch version. On the ship at the beginning it’s not even raining and there’s no water spilling over the edges of the ship. It’s like a completely different game.

Zion said at the end that the text review was up on their site around launch and in the meanwhile they got a response from 505 regarding performance patches. Chances are that's why the video came out so late.

No update and the company said recently there is still no date on the fix

@@Jagger0718 nope. The game was amazing and nearing the end of the year I'd still say this is my game of the year.

Usually when someone says that, they mean that it distracts from the atmosphere and presence of the world you're in and it makes you more aware of things that either don't make logical sense or are inconsistent within the game itself. KingK did a great analysis of this kind of thing in his Super Mario Sunshine Retrospective.

Nerdy George Washington I mean...sure, but that type of phrasing makes it seem as if playing a game is bad. As if immersion takes precedence over gameplay. It’s all supposed to work synonymously.

@@TheJmack90 Immersion does not necessarily need to take precedence over gameplay. But if immersion is the overall thesis of the game and what it's trying to accomplish, like with many Metroid and Castlevania style games, then anything that would break that immersion would do a disservice to the game. Super Mario Sunshine creates an unprecedented sense of immersion by making the world feel so interconnected and lively and thematically distinct, then destroys that immersion when it kicks you out of the level every time you get a Shine Sprite. In this case, it seems clear that Sunshine wants you to feel immersed with how much effort goes into the world design, but ultimately its boot-out system ruins the immersion by halting your exploration and forcing you out. Since immersion is one of the defining qualities of Sunshine's world design, this issue is bigger than just a minor annoyance, at least to some people. Same goes for Bloodstained and Castlevania. So much effort is poured into making the environments rich and detailed and thematically appropriate, and the gameplay reflects it as well with the experience system making you feel as though you are not just controlling Alucard or Miriam, but that you ARE Alucard and Miriam, and that you are growing as they do. In these games' cases, the immersion breaking isn't all that severe since nothing really outright contradicts what the game is going for, as in the case with Super Mario Sunshine. It's a heavily subjective thing, but I think the majority of people really enjoy that sense of being lost in a world. It's the same thing as reading a good work of fiction. Think of how many people read Harry Potter and think "Man, I want to be able to use magic." And in a videogame, you CAN. It scratches that itch we all have that makes us want to be in a fantasy world.

Nerdy George Washington I get what you mean. I guess I just don’t get THAT immersed in a video game to the point where being aware that you’re playing a video game is a detractor. I’ve always been of the mind that participating in the game itself IS the immersion. And anything that interrupts me from playing the game breaks that immersion...mainly the technical side of things (ex. loading screens, glitches, hell even too many cutscenes.) It is a subjective topic, as you said.

@@TheJmack90 It's not that being made aware of the game is in itself immersion breaking, it's when that awareness directly makes you notice more flaws or when the awareness contradicts what the game is trying to make you feel. Again, the boot-out system in Super Mario Sunshine halts your exploration of the world that the game wants you to be immersed in, which makes it a chore to have to go back and find your bearings again and continue from where you left off. Imagine if in Breath of the Wild, as soon as you explore a new area, it tells you the location of every shrine and Korok seed. This would make the game actively worse because the best part of the game, and the defining aspect of the game, is being able to explore the world and find new things on your own.

Unfortunately the performance issues still exist. It's mostly whenever you enter a room right now that the issues primarily come into play.

@@84warhead can you please explain more? Because I bought that game (on Switch) before thinking about the performance, realizing afterwards I probably should have gotten the PS4 version. I still haven't played it yet. What do you think?

@@nowonmetube It's a good game but the performance issues can be distracting. Basically almost everything they talked about in this review still persists. Almost every time I enter a room there will be frame drops as textures will noticeably load in, or when a lot is happening on the screen (like multiple enemies being killed at once). Close ups of the characters during conversations look very blurry. Another thing is sometimes the game will just outright crash or freeze up. It's a somewhat rare occurrence, I think I've only experience about 4 crashes in my playthrough of the game and when it does freeze up it will eventually unfreeze. It's good, but it definitely loses points for the issues that plague it.

its about time i saw a positive review lol, i went to gamestop today and bought warriors orochi 4, as well as this game and to be honest i love them both, but i guess i'm just a simple kind of guy haha, never the less, i have had no issue so far and i love them both

actually the vita port would probably have been made with its own engine that the vita could handle, the problem with the switch is that people keep thinking "just lower the rez a bit it will be fine" and unless its an indie 2d game its never fine, thats my take at least

@@mrt.7146 Sweet. I just got into Metroidvanias over covid after finally getting a switch - I missed the sale 4 months ago or so and just saw it was marked down from 40 to 15 and I thought why not. Love by the end of these games after hours after grinding you're just stacked with cool moves/weapons
