Harmonica Lessons on John Popper's intro to Blues Traveler's "But Anyway." I still remember exactly where I was the first time I heard "But Anyway." I didn't play harmonica at the time, but I was absolutely blown away by the innovative, lightning fast approach of John Popper. I've been a Blues Traveler fan ever since. "But Anyway" is an awesome workout for the advancing harmonica student. I'm playing on an E harmonica in 2nd position, in the key of B.
Knowing the major pentatonic scale in cross-harp would be immensely helpful if you're wanting to learn Blues Traveler songs. Here's my video teaching it: • Harmonica Basics XXIX ...
Also, knowing the Mixolydian scale (major scale with a flat 7th degree) in cross-harp will help if you want to improvise in the style of John Popper. Here are my videos teaching it:
• Harmonica Basics XXI -...
• Harmonica Basics XXXVI...
Knowing these scales is not necessary to learn "But Anyway" but they will help you better understand what you are playing, and may help you to better incorporate some of his fantastic vocabulary into your playing.
Here are the harmonica tabs for Blues Traveler's "But Anyway":
1-2- 2+3+ 1-2- 1-2- 2+3+ 1-2- 2+3+ 1-2- 1-2- 2+3+
1-2- (taka ta ) 1+2+ 1-2- 1-2- 2+3+ 1-2- 1-2- 1-2- 1-2- 2+3+
I mis-speak here saying "Five draw." And everything else I say for this section (until 3:30) is one whole off (Sorry...again!) It should actually be 4 draw. Follow these harmonica tabs rather than what I'm saying:
4- (quick bend up) 4- 3- 5+ 4- 3- 4+ 3+
(from here on I'm speaking accurately again:)
3- (3-W) 2- 1- 2+ 2- 3- 3- (3-W) 2- 1- 2+ 2- 2-(W) 2- 2- 2+
3- 3+ 4+ 3+ 4- (slight bend and slide down to) 2-
4+ 4- 4+ 3- 3+ 3- (3-W) 2- 1- 2+ 2- 2-(W) 2- 2- 2+
3- (3-W) 2- 1- 2+ 1-2- 1-2- 1-2- 1-2-

Hey pal, thank you very much for this lesson and tab. It helped a ton. I have noticed that, even though I could play the notes pretty well after a week or two, it still didn't sound right. With more practice, it keeps sounding a little better. I guess all I'm saying is that it's not all about hitting the notes but also phrasing and timing of each note that really makes a lick turn out. Anyhow, just rambling now. Thanks again!

Do you have a video on precision of single note draw/blow?

From a friend of mine "I have no teeth, so I tried to learn to play the harmonica with my nose. It sounded like someone playing the harmonica with their nose. So I quit and took up Bocce instead."

Hey man, good teaching but did you really say “blow on the 2 draw”? (5:45). I don’t know how to inhale and exhale at the same time.

What harp would one use to play 2nd position with a B flat clarinet? F flat?

Hey there, is there a possibility to make a video on Japanese Prison Blues from South Park? I've managed to get the first riff, but the other ones are a mystery to me (I'm a beginner). I would really appreciate it, it would be great to entertain peopel :)

Are you sure you are on 5 draw when you start playing the single note part of this song? I have my E harp and it sounds like you start on 4 draw then your bending it and taking it from there. Unless your playing a different key harp then key of E?
@FunkyHarp
@FunkyHarp 9 лет назад
No, you're right, Jeremy! I address that in the info section in the tabs. I'm 1 whole off for that whole line. Sorry about that! Follow the tabs rather than what I say....

Beginner here. Watch your videos a lot. A request. For us beginners can you spend a little time on terms or if you have done this already direct me to that video. Ex. "cross harp meaning, first position vs. Second position, why would I use a B harmonica if the song is in G ? Why not a G harp them". I am learning to play but I feel I should know the terminology. Its hard to find this information. Most teachers and vidro makers "skim" over the terms as if we should know what they mean.

Yeah, I touch on it a little in my second video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YhZgfOUCSIA.html. Here's a crash course: 1st position and 2nd position are the most commonly played. 1st position means you are playing in the key of the harmonica (C harmonica would be the key of C.) You're "home base" note is C which is 1+, 4+, and also 7+ and 10+. You're thinking more blowing than drawing in this position. In America, this position is most commonly used for folk music. On a piano, 1st position tonality is playing the white keys from C to C. 2nd position is referred to as cross-harp. I've always imagined it's called cross-harp because you're focusing on drawing more than blowing. To find the key, count up 5 notes starting on the key of the harp. So C harp in 2nd position is G (counting C as 1 and going up to 5, you land on G.) Now your "home base" is G which is primarily 2- (which is same note as 3+,) 5+, and also 9+. In America, this position is most commonly used for blues. To hear the 2nd position on a piano, you'd play the white keys from G to G. By bending some of the notes in 2nd position, you can get the blues scale as I teach here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7GykBnoOCBo.html One way that I've categorized my lessons is by position. Watching them from these playlists might be the easiest way to get a firm grasp on this concept. Here are my 1st position videos: ru-vid.com/group/PLyv42f0OGtPoPkhZs1B2skMs573u8M4YM Here are the 2nd position videos: ru-vid.com/group/PLyv42f0OGtPr6AYsNI5HT0CmtvyG7Q7eV Hope that's helpful! If it's confusing now, don't worry. It will become more clear with time. Play on!

That first note is a 4 draw not a 5 draw and the blow is. 5 blow not a 6, that’s what I’m hearing.

Random observation about harmonica guys: Will we play better if we wear a hat? It seems that most of these guys wear hats, so it's gotta be part of the technique.
@FunkyHarp

Definitely. You get an extra 25 harmonica points right off the bat if you wear the hat....
