What gives the best performance from the BMW N62 engine and 6-speed gearbox from SIX different driving modes? I know a quiet back road to do time trials safely and go through most of the modes. Using the editor millisecond timer to sort the men modes from the boy modes in real-world conditions. The BMW 650i 6-Series is a fast car with 0-60 times around 5 seconds, let's see which mode realises the full engine potential.
Does the Sport Button make a difference? Yes it does, but in a way that you may guess!

Regarding the Sport button: I found with my 2011 335is with the DCT that the Sport button served to quicken the throttle response a bit, raise the shift point a bit and quicken the shift a bit. With this in mind, your selection of the Sport button would serve little purpose for a 0-60 test with only one gear change. The Sport function noticeably enhances the overall driving experience which is the way we drive usually. Taking this a step further, turning off the DTC would probably hinder a 0-60 time with less tan perfect traction but it improves the overall power delivery and predictability in most every other respect. Just my dos centavos, Timm. Love your channel!
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
Thanks Rudy, I felt the same way, that switching off DTC didn't help the 0-60 times. I think the difference is, unless I'm just cruising I am changing gears manually - so I can choose the red-line to suit the conditions - and I'm quite happy pushing the throttle a bit quicker if I need to!

These videos are really outstanding Tim. This subject is very engaging. I always felt the Sport button was for the suspension damping only and the D/S mode was for alternate agressive transmission shift point gate. I will say I tried the Sport mode on and off to see if it affected fuel economy in cruise on a 700 mile trip. Amazing, with the Sport mode off the fuel economy went from 20 to 22 mpg with the cruise at 75 mph on my E70.This appears to indicate the Valvetronic increasing fuel economy from eliminating pumping losses in the intake? That is 10 percent increase in fuel economy in cruise.

I have an e39 540i. Regular driver for 8 years. Manual shift it all day, everyday. I maybe put it in sport mode once in a blue moon when I just want to keep both hands on the steering wheel. Love how far it keeps the gear. Much better for the twisties.

Another great video Timm, as always a lot of time and thought gone into it clearly. There could be one caveat to the method of reading from the rev counter - the effect of torque converter slip. A given rpm might not always correspond to the same road speed. I don’t know if the lockup strategy varies between the modes.
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 3 года назад
Yes, at low revs it would have been a problem, but at 6000 RPM and full throttle the results should be the same for all runs - and that was all I was interested in!

From a racing perspective, Sport-sport- manual looks like you made an early gear change. It doesn’t even change that early in auto and sport auto (check 5.2 & 5.08 second run). Also when you did the nonsport- manual gear change, you changed at 6500 rpm, not 6000 rpm like you did in sport-sport- manual. In my opinion that’s what made the difference.

Hi Timm, love the videos and thanks for you advice on bimmer forums in the last year or so. I have always liked starting in 3rd gear in my 2007 650i, in normal Drive but manual (no sport button). Sometimes I wonder if the 0-60mph isn't almost as good starting in 3rd with no gear changes than starting in 1st or 2nd. Would be great to see if that is just a perception or not. Starting in 3rd is cool I think - it shows off the raw power/torque without spinning the wheels or racing the engine. The other thing I enjoy is pressing the traction control button once - it gives you nice small slides round corners. Holding the traction control button down for a few seconds give you the full non-traction-control mode where you learn the most but have to be most careful :)
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation

Thanks Jonathan! I like a smooth 3rd gear pullaway as well - but keep the power down as it puts more torque through the gearbox!

Right, how come when i shift to 3rd & 4th gear in manual sports mode it shifts automatically back one gear back from M3 back to M4 when i slow down Say if im going 60 mph just for example, Going 60mph & it shifts to M6. Also as i come to a complete stop it goes right back in to M3?
@jopecu
@jopecu Год назад
@@TeeHumble if you try to go to M3 and it indicates back to M4 it is because the revs were too high for it to engage M3 at the speed you are going. Putting it into M3 automatically when you stop is because that is the highest gear that it will let you start off in from a standstill. It can't stay in M4, M5 etc when you are stationary as the gearbox needs to be ready for you to start moving from standstill again. Finally, and you may know this already, but If you don't manually change from say M3 to M4 and the revs are about to hit the limit (e.g. around 6500 rpm), the gearbox will automatically change up to the next gear for you. Hope that helps!
@TeeHumble
@TeeHumble Год назад
@@jopecu that makes sense, i 💡thought it could been the vanos Our the adaptation system, or valtronic system. Also my timing chains inside the engine experiencing systems failure But like you said it more of the revs being to high giving the gear box mainly enough time to respond.

Manual transmission 645Ci owner here. I always drive in sport, as it makes it easier to rev-match more precisely, and I don't have any issues putting power down, even in heavy rain. Maybe the sport mode is calibrated differently in the automatics?
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation

Hi tim, i just bought a 2006 650i for $8500 at 108k. The transmission is going out but the valve seals were just replaced, and i was wondering what i may need to do to fix it. The reverse just stopped working the other day but it started working again today, and the shifting is not very smooth. Also, there is an abnormal amount of engine break sometimes. Any thoughts on what may need to be done?

Hey Tim, Have you tried flashing Bosch DME with a custom map? On my E63 I've gained about 8% torque and 10% HP (with higher octane fuel I am able shift at a higher redline which tech at the dyno tells me is why I gained a bit more HP than torque). Besides coding the exhaust flap to open in manual mode, running xHP on the ZF transmission and deleting the charcoal component from the intake (still running an air filter obviously) the car is basically stock as far as mechanical componentry is concerned. I'd be happy to take a delta of my car's tune from stock and apply it to your one if you send me a dump of you DME. All you need is a KESS V2 clone to read and write to your DME which are about $70 USD online.

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation The ignition remap is definitely hit or miss...great if you have somewhere to use it but useless otherwise. The transmission remap is definitely something I've gotta keep nudging you into trying however given what you've pointed out in this video. You can set up the regular mode to be easier on your clutch rings while setting up the sport button to anything from better shift response at the expense of clutch wear...or just make it a "burnout button" like a 19 year old dreams for lol.

Hi Timm, did you know you can enable digital speedo in ncs expert via 1 line of code, it displays in the lower dash where you normally get mpg and range, you can cycle through the displays as normal. Additionally you can link this and your normal needle to GPS derived speed too. In my older nav unit you can also display GPS speed on the nav screen, but i think its the version before yours - might still be available. No more parallax errors when testing.

Definitely short shifted when in sport, sport and manual! We are talking 3 tenths of a second between all modes….hardly a difference in it, especially as tyres will be warmer/cooler and road surface will change depending on stretch being used. Basically, the car is as quick in all modes, it just depends which you prefer to drive as it alters the driving feel, not the speed.
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
Yes, not much difference between the modes Aiden - but that's the point of the video - the 'Sports' button doesn't make you go any faster!
@RiderInRed

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformationIt wouldn’t if you’re only doing 0-60 tbh. The sport button makes everything a bit more responsive, pretty sure even adds up the pressure on the fuel pump. Gear shifts are faster too. If you want to drive in manual, do sport and manual. The throttle pedal response especially is quite easy to feel being faster. Try taking it out on curvy roads and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
