In this tutorial I will show you in detail how to time your VANOS system on the M62TU engine. These engines are found in a number of BMW and Range Rover models like the BMW E38 735i 740i 740iL E39 535i 540i E53 X5 4.4 and Range Rover with the 4.4 V8 BMW engine.

Hi, I just love the simple way you present and explain, the vanos is such a "mystery and myth of difficulty" and you finally have blown it to pieces, vanos is a simple mechanism and all the mechanics make this is a drama. Thanks :)

Ok guys so as you would have noticed, i recently attempted this timing procedure on my own with no guidance except for this video alone. After two failed attempts of timing this engine, i discovered that the crankshaft lockout pin was not correctly positioned and secured in the lockout hole and the cam shaft on bank 1-4 (passenger side) was not locked out with the cam lock blocks allowing 1-4 on the cam lobe to face upwards. Instead it was locked out with 1-4 facing downward which meant that cylinder one was not at top dead center the way the video shows you which is exactly what the bmw’s TIS describes. This meant that the engine was not being timed correctly even though the ohm meter would beep. It was just be beeping in the incorrect orientation of the cam. After correcting everything car still did not start. I began to suspect bent valves due to improper timing as a culprit and so compression was the next thing to check. Please make sure that when you check for compression the engine must be timed correctly in order to receive accurate readings. Anyways, so i discovered no compression at cylinder 3 (which makes sense because this was the side that did not have the cam positioned correctly during the lockout). Long story short, i knew i had bent valves at that cylinder. Most likely intake valves since the engine did not Start. I disassembled the 1-4 head, and discovered both intake valves at cylinder 3 to be bent. What i learned was, with this particular engine, it will not start on the other 7 cylinders if you lack compression at ONE cylinder even if the timing procedure was done correctly. So guys best of luck, this video was an excellent guide in getting your m62tu timed. Keep up the good work👌 By the way, everything is now put back together. I picked up some used valves, and re lapped all the valves on that side of the head. Reassembled everything and the car now runs better than it did before the timing chain failed.

If I remember correctly you do see the numbers facing up. Just to be 100% sure make sure that the bank 1 CYLINDER 1 intake and exhaust cam lobes face up and towards eachother. The idea is that all valves are closed at cyl 1 TDC

Hi The chinese timing set is as good as the original BMW tool set in my experience. As long as you make sure your crankshaft is locked with the pin and both cams are locked at the back with the tools then you can adjust the timing with the vanos tools with the chains on of course. Hope this helps

Hello. Help!! M62 TU here. Bought a cheap chinese kit with the solenoid socket and well... it stripped the 32 mm solenoid nut. My question is there enough room from the top once you take the valve cover off to put an adjustable wrench on it? I don't want to take the front cover off since Im only replacing the solenoids now. Thanks.
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic Год назад
Hi I personally don't like using adjustable spanners as they never fit tight and may cause more damage. I think you may have to remove the upper timing cover in order to have proper access. You will most likely not be able to do it by just removing the valve cover only. Hope this helps

@@TheKeenMechanic thanks for all the tips. I think its a great tutorial nonetheless. However, im about to put things back together tomorrow. I think i did the timing procedure incorrectly because i didnt lock out the flywheel in the correct position. This time though i am more confident that will start because im sure i locked out the flywheel correctly. The first time i did it, i remember the notch and OT were not lined up precisely and this time they are. The only thing im afraid of is that i didnt damage my valves when i went to start the engine while the engine was off timing. That sound the engine makes when you think the fuel pump isnt pumping fuel, may be the valves making contact with the pistons when you go to start it. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the tips.

@@TheKeenMechanic 100% changing transmission and differential fluid. I hate BMW’s “life time fluid” nonsense. I emptied the fluid out of my manual E39 and the fluid was disgusting. Car drive so much better with new transmission fluid. I ordered everything already. The car’s mechanical issues are all repaired. I have the radiator, hoses and aux fan to install once delivered. They’re coming early next week. I purchased oil, ATF, and coolant today. Even put a new BMW emblem on the trunk last night. I’m buying a transmission filter and gasket off EBay motors. $23 & free shipping. Never used EBay; but BMW guys in the U.S. totally rebuild their cars using just EBay motors. Ok this is the second attempt at timing the m62tu, 2001 740i and the car is still not starting and i dont know why. I have fuel air and spark and all the basics good, and as much as I dont want to blame it on the timing procedure, im starting to think I am doing something wrong but I dont know what it is. Im suspecting it may be the lock out of the flywheel itself (the hole im inserting the pin in) but the OT and the crank case notch both lined up perfectly, 1-4 on bank 1 and 5-8 on bank 2, continuity with ohm meter at both banks and still cant figure out. In fact, even when I went to torque all 4 cams, the flywheel didnt move an inch either so I know I did it right? I need help
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic Год назад
Have you checked your compression as well? Other reasons why it wont start could be your cam sensors and your crank sensor. Make sure they are connected properly. If you know someone with an oscilloscope check this 1st before you start buying expensive parts. Make sure the DME sees and receives the signal from the cam and crank sensor. Regarding the timing I can confirm the procedure shown is by the BMW manual and has helped many other people. Let me know what happens either way as I am curious to find out what has gone wrong for you. Make sure your compression is fine. If you get someone with a good oscilloscope they can check the relative compression with an Amp clamp on the oscilloscope to save time.
@TakesTalent
@TakesTalent Год назад
@@TheKeenMechanic I did not check compression yet because i dont have enough reason to believe it is compression related but i will if i run out of options. Regarding connections, everything is connected and secured and double checked, dme communication to and from cam and crank is still unknown because i’d like to eliminate the most obvious possibilities first before investigating further. I did notice something odd though: so after giving it a couple cranks to see if it starts, and no fire, i went and removed the pulleys to verify if the flywheel is still in the same position. Crank case notch is stationary at 11 o clock position so the flywheel was lined up to match the crank case notch after securing it with pin to begin timing. Im now seeing the OT on the flywheel at the 5 o clock position. Is that normal? I would think that if it was timed at 11 o’clock matching the crank case notch, that even after you crank the engine, the flywheel should still come back to that 11 o’clock position? Right?
@TheKeenMechanic
@TheKeenMechanic Год назад
Do you know that crank turns twice and cam turns once. This could be the reason for the missslignment. I am sure you will get to the bottom of it and you will have great understanding of the m62tu engines. We learn a lot when you have issues🤜🤛
@hasanmohammed3340
@hasanmohammed3340 Год назад
If it cranks but doesn’t start and everything’s good then it’s your camshaft sensor (not crankshaft) replace it with oe
@cccaaa660
@cccaaa660 7 месяцев назад
@@TheKeenMechanic Also, to be sure of the correct timing before putting the engine back together and trying to start it: You could remove the lock pin and cam blocs, then turn the engine 2 full turns (720 degrees) thru the crankshaft. The engine should revert to TDC. The cams and the flywheels should revert to the correct timing position that you just set. Verify it. If they do not, something is amiss, and you need to re-time the engine right.
