The hardest part of bunk replacement is figuring out what to do with your boat while you work on the trailer.
@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 2 года назад
Seriously! Most of the people at my lake will launch their boat and anchor it off the beach. Or just tie it up on the outside of the dock at the lunch ramp on a quiet weekday. Then work on their trailer. But trying to do it on a busy weekend is no fun.

If you use heavy wet treated lumber let it dry out a few days before wrapping it with carpet. There's also a certain way to wrap the ends by trimming out nice and neat like a Christmas present

Use contact cement to help hold the carpet to the wood. Then the carpet won’t move around when boat is sliding on it and tear it. My last bunks lasted almost eight years by doing this
@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 3 года назад
That is a great idea!!! I think my carpet goes fast bc the trailer sits empty all summer in the sun and gets bakes by UV rays.

Great vid, I also have to repair metal brackets that were bent on one side by previous owner. My issue is having somewhere to unload a boat for a few days while welders repair ..then I can do the bunks.

Do you have a local storage facility you can unload boat or call a local boat shop
@terywoodsr.8690

Okay, maybe in CA, you can't do this.... BUT, you missed a couple of steps that will make it last a lot longer... Once you have everything dry fitted, then take the wood and cover it with fiberglass resin. The wood can still breath, but it really water proofs the wood. Also there is a spray like Scotchguard... it used to be called Ultra Seal boat carpet conditioner (Was sold at NAPA auto parts). It helps with UV protection. Or since that is a bit pricy... just replace the bunk carpet every couple of years.... remember to use stainless steel staples because regular staples will rust and take out the wood with it. The only other thing I'd do, is use new stainless nylock nuts on new stainless bolts. That way they won't back out and mar the hull. Other than that, very good information for the first time DIY'er.

Great job But yes that big BUT pressure treated wood has copper in it that oxidizes aluminum. That boat sits on those for the better part of its life and when it gets wet may release does impurities . I'd keep an eye on it. It may be nothing to worry about but and yes again that BUT it may. Food for thought

@strikeforcek9149
@strikeforcek9149 3 года назад
When dealing with boat trailers, we usually use stainless steel bolts, washers, nuts etc. Galvanized works good too, and may be able to find stronger rated bolts for cheaper, easier to source. But, we've used stainless on all of our trailers and hardware.

I know you said Red Pressurized not sure how it is different then the green Pressure Treated wood, & if it’s true or not but I heard that you’re not supposed to use stainless steel stables on Pressure Treated wood; that monel stables are preferable on Pressure Treated...

Luis Sonoma I did some research and it looks like you’re correct about the I did some research and it looks like you’re correct about the stainless steel fasteners in treated lumber. However I think they’re mostly concerned with however I think they're mostly concerned with load bearing lumber and a house and how those large stainless steel bolts and fasteners can lose strength. I think you should be more concerned about non-stainless steel Staples Rusting away in your carpet then the chemical mix occurring.
@fixitwithjake

Luis Sonoma The green versus the brown lumber is just depending on what chemicals they’re using to treat it. The green the green versus the brown lumber is just depending on what chemicals that are using to treat it. The green has a large ingredient of copper. I chose brown because in my mountain town all the contractors right here use brown pressure treated lumber in the weather and snow and it holds up very well. And there is a good supply of it at our stores.

FixItWithJake That makes sense, well I ended up overlapping the carpet & using screws with washers every 6 inches just in case the staples rust off. And formalmente reason I got possessed and purchased Zinc Coated lag screws to fasten the bunks to the swivel brackets🤦🏿‍♂️

You have a very similar/almost identical SBT trailer to me. I also see you are missing one of your side pieces that covers the wheel opening. I happened to lose mine today on the back (or to) the water. Have your replaced these before? If yes what did you use. Marine grade plywood? Any better way of mounting them than how mine came. (which was essentially sheet metal screws through the carpet and board and into the diamond plate fender.) These are quite odd, cause they sit an angle due to bar at the bottom and only real place to attach is into the fender. Trying to come up with a better solution.

Helpful tip use LAG BOLTS and not regular studs with a nut much easier.
@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 4 года назад
Good point. I just reused what came with the boat trailer. On my pwc trailer, I used lag bolts and you are right it went much faster. But, I am a little worried about strength. I had to get new lag bolts when I redid the jetski trailer bc many of them were bent. So on a boat trailer, you'd have to keep an eye on it with the extra weight, that the lag bolts don't pull out or bend when there are lateral forces on the trailer. Such as when people power load the boat or don't put the trailer in deep enough water to load. Be sure to still drill out the hole first when using lag bolts, so you don't crack the wood. Cheers!
@kCI251

Use carriage bolts since lag bolts will loose grip and board will eventually fall off.
