I can tell you probably why the audience was silent during Unchained Melody. It's because the way Bobby sings that song, it gives me, and a lot of women, chills, because it is so beautiful and emotional. I honestly get tears in my eyes every time I hear him sing it! It touches my soul.

Unchained Melody was sung by Bobby on the Andy Williams Show on TV. The audience was probably older. People didn’t jump up and applaud in a studio audience in the 60s.

Unchained Melody was recorded live on the Andy Williams Variety show. And this rendition of My Prayer was performed on Shindig, a weekly television show that the Righteous Brothers regularly appeared on. This show was televised in black and white. These shows were popular in the 60's. I grew up in that era and let me tell you that the girls were gaga over these young boys, myself included. Miss watching them and that time.

For the Andy Williams Show the live tv audience was instructed to be as quiet and still as possible, and save applause for the end. For Shindig, the audience could cheer and clap, and did! I was an audience member for a different episode, and remember what we were told about that.

Unchained Melody was from The Andy Williams Show, which was more for adults with the occasional teen oriented guests. My Prayer was from the teen oriented show Shindig. The studio audiences for Shindig were mostly teens and it wasn't unusual for the teeny boppers (as we were called then) to scream for their favorites, especially cute guys like Bobby. Bobby and Bill were semi-regulars on Shindig for a couple of years and were fan faves. It's a shame there aren't more live clips of Bobby raving as he does with Summertime. You should check out Something's Got a Hold on Me, a kind of bluesy ballad by Bobby, unfortunately not live. Also, I Need Your Loving Everyday with both guys, also from Shindig.

The adult audience on the Andy Williams show was asked to refrain from making noise and interrupting a performance & save their applause until the song was done. The Shindig TV show was meant for the young crowd to watch & they could be in the audience and let loose. At times the screaming covered up the vocals.

Of course, Bobby Hatfield continues to show the many different facets to his unmatched talent. First, My Prayer that would make not only "Teenie Boppers" scream and faint, but would make even the more mature ladies swoon !!!!! Summertime, being such a different type of song altogether, would make most want to move to the beat and we would be amazed at the soulful and jazzy sound--something we may not have associated with the Great Bobby Hatfield. Thanks for both performances. Cheryl's Mom, Cathy

I so enjoy your participation, opinions, and pure bliss as you get to know, hear, and play these stunning "Brothers". I had never heard Bobby sing this song "Summertime", and as usual, Bobby never fails to blow me away. Thank you for playing these different songs that Bobby slayed, and dammit, unbelievably I had never heard him cover. I should have searched a lot more for songs that the RB recorded, I have adored and worshipped those "Brothers", wishing that I had been old enough to have been able to see them perform in person when they had those righteous hits "Unchained Melody" "You've Lost That Loving Feeling"...There is a song that they do as a duo called "Hung On You" ...wow wow wow, it's deep and the epitome of a one sided love and the heartache knowing that it'll always be a one sided love...🎵🎶Ohhh Baby why did I have to get so hung on you...🎶🎵 *Intentionally spaced for the pauses in drawing out the song's dramatic broken hearted angst...

Bobby's 1965 version of Unchained Melody was done on the Andy Williams TV show. This is the first time Bobby sang the song with his upper head voice. The record version is different. Hence, the TV audience, live, didn't move or scream. We all had respect to listen to the singer. The Prayer was done on Shindig, another weekly ABC TV show.

One song Bobby recorded while split from Bill, was called "Run To My Lovin' Arms." On the same CD as "Stay With Me." Ringo was drummer in "Stay." But "Lovin' Arms" is a very beautiful song. None of the songs from The Richard Perry Sessions got much promotion. I know you have lots to go through, but maybe you could get to it sometime. Bobby was the greatest singer that ever lived. And this song is one that should be heard. Bobby was unbelievable. Nobody could wail like Bobby Lee Hatfield!

Listen to the Ink Spots version of My Prayer. The audience for Unchanged Melody was controlled and cautioned not to stand or applaud noisily. This was common for TV audiences at time. Listen to the Platters version of My Prayer too. Listen to Janis Joplins version of Summertime---a lot of influence from Bobby's treatment of it!

Sometimes during performances that are Beyond description the audience just sits and listens. You can see this happen on The Voice America's Got Talent Britain's Got Talent where the performer is so Dynamic that the audience is quiet. I think Unchained Melody definitely has that quality of putting the audience in total awe. In awe of the performance by Bobby in awe of the message of the song. I don't think the prayer had the same Dynamics that Unchained Melody had. I also read in one of the other comments that the differences between the audiences and I believe that too is very much a factor. I think summertime showed his vocal prowess better than the prayer. And if you notice the audience was not screaming during the performance. Pause the moment when his vocals just transfixed the audience. IMHO.

Since you made this video 2 yrs. ago, it might be too late to comment, but you were wondering where Bobby Hatfield sang the version of “ Unchained Melody “ you watched. He sang it on the Andy Williams Show (a variety show), so, because they were recording the show live, I’m sure they asked the audience to hold their applause till the end. Note: his mother was in the audience for the first time and he also had a head cold. Wow! You sure couldn’t tell it! Also, Andy Williams first sang with his brothers and later went solo. He also had a very beautiful crooner’s voice. He was the one who made “Moon River” famous. If you haven’t heard that you really need to listen to it.

Two different TV shows and the Andy Williams Show (Unchained Melody), I believe the song My Prayer was on Shindig, and Summertime may have been the Ed Sullivan Show. The audience would have controlled their emotions back in those days, out of respect for the artist and so that everybody else in the room could hear every moment of his precious voice ... if they had just let loose and screamed and fainted, nobody would have heard all the nuances that Bobby used to put into his performance ... kinda like when someone walks into the.
