Lets say the FAA was appropriately funded and they could look over every inch of the aircraft. There is no feasible way that the FAA regulator would have more engineering expertise on that aircraft compared to the ones who designed and built the aircraft from the ground up. The hundreds of sensors they would have to go through the sheer amount of computer chips that would have to be examined all of it would take years for the FAA to examine. The reason these stories about the Max 8 are on the news is because it's an exceptional situation. Despite the regulatory concerns they discussed, commercial passenger aircraft are statistically _incredibly_ safe. Every time something like this happens it's awful press. Boeing's stock price dropped considerably as a result. Stock prices are the one (1) thing that make capitalists start giving a shit, regardless of regulations. God knows I don't like the things either. It's pretty normal to be irrationally anxious about them: we have no control over what the plane does, it's a restricted environment, there are many people in a small space, and it's not something we've evolved to deal with. Also, at least the plane doesn't run Vista. Or ME. [shudder]

I think I can make an effective argument that Clinton (the former President) was far more responsible for the 2008 recession than Bush (the 2nd), see Glass Steagall. Third how about before passing judgment on everyone like usual you wait for all the facts. Fourth if it turns out to be a design flaw, that would be Boeing’s fault, same as software, if it’s a training issue then it is every pilot that climbed in and flew that plane when not trained to do so, and in doing so endangered every passenger on the plane

Ok, but to those wondering about pilot training: there is more to it than that hour on an iPad. That pilot has to have extensive training, including real time flying planes, to get a license and to fly commercially. THEN they get the hour of training for the controls of that specific plane. Most of the main controls are easily recognizable, so it's just a matter of lesser used controls. I would say that if pilots don't feel 1 hour is enough time for training, then they need to increase it until they feel comfortable, but that isn't the reason the planes crashed..

Trevor, it wasn't always this way. Having spent several decades in Airline Engineering, I can tell you that we had some pretty savvy FAA safety inspectors that frequented my desk with questions regarding safety procedures and maintenance practices. No original equipment manufacturer (OEM) wants to injure their customers. It is not good business, nor is it ethical. What does happen inside the Boeings, Airbus's, et al is that they sometime fall into paradigms in regards to human factors engineering. If there is one area where ALL manufacturers need to dedicate more resources, it is here. It is up to the operators AND the FAA to ask tougher questions and refuse to put any aircraft into revenue service until all of the issues are addressed to everyone's satisfaction.

the reason the training for the pilots was done on a tablet instead of in a sim is that they aren't getting a new type rating, they are just converting to a newer plane of the same type. this minimal training is allowed, however the lack of training on the MCAS is likely a contributing factor.

@hend0Linz
@hend0Linz 5 лет назад
slightly different details, same sick profit motive. The engine on the Max 8 is bigger and further forward which actually pushes the plane slightly skyward. So Boeing quietly added a 'maneuvering characteristics augmentation system' to sense this and nudge the plane back down. Of course, they don't tell the Pilots this or how to turn the system off. Now, in the Lionair flight the sensor Fs up and starts pushing the plane down for no reason. 26 times the pilots try to pull the plane up, but every time the MCAS pushes the plane back down. All avoidable if boeing would have taken the time to build the plane right and spent the money to train the pilots. profits over people and no regulation and this is what happens.
@zarpthunder
@zarpthunder 5 лет назад
As a person who has roommates who work at Boeing, you’ve been lightly misinformed Trevor. Boeing offered the pilots full training in Vegas. The airlines outside of the United States declined these trainings and instead settling for the 90 minute iPad version, because either the pilots were too lazy or the airlines wanted to cut costs.

Pff, about 20 years ago, it was already known that flying is about money. There was a known defect with a plane. They could fix it. But that would costs billions - to recall all planes and fix the problem. That sensory problem was quite rare though. So the lawyers, statistical analysts + insurance companies decided to let the problem remain, meaning they knew that one in every 450.000 flights would be prone to crashing. But.... It was cheaper to pay off the relatives of the people that died in the crash, than it was to repair the planes. I think you can guess what happened...
@peterpain6625
@peterpain6625 5 лет назад
Worse: They did not (to my knowledge) update the flight manual on how to switch the assist off in case it goes bonkers. Not wanting to spend billions on the fix i can get (in a business context, not in an engeneering one) but leaving the pilots to "figure shit out by themselves when the assist fails" is gross neglience in my humble opinion.

You guys wanna know a cool fact. ITS NOT BOEING, NOT BOEING AT ALL. The stall detector, which is commonly found as faulty, is what caused the plane to do this. The stall detector gave a wrong reading to the onboard computer and to the pilots. The plane was doing exactly as it was supposed to do, push the nose down if the plane is stalling is the way to escape the stall. The problem was the stall detector and the pilots/airline companies for both crashes. First of all, experienced pilots know how to fix this, a 777 pilot said that he would be prepared to deal with the issue because of his experience. 737 pilots are still in the middle pack, yes they are good and confident however they are not pros and do not know how to react to specific situations. Both crashes involved airlines not well know for keeping a modern/large and expensive fleet. They do not teach their pilots if they dont have to so the pilots are not ready. All the pilots had to do is turn off the stall detector completely(which is an option on every plane and is what pilots do if the detector gives them a false reading) and then fly the plane back normally. If the stall meter is off then the onboard computer does not have to overcorrect for a stall because it has no information of a stall. Also the pilots may not have been thinking clearly as in both cases the pilots attempted to pull up. If the stall detector is going off and it believes the plane is going into a stall, then the plane should point its nose down. Because the plane was receiving an extra input of nose up, it tried to overcompensate by pushing the nose further down. Boeing is not at fault here especially if the stall meter is not created by boeing. The FAA might have also contributed to the problem by ignoring the necessary pilot training.
