The Green brothers are good men that put off green flags with nearly all they say and do. However John putting water in his cereal is perhaps the biggest red flag I've ever seen
@@chuchu9649 That's likely a reference to John's struggles with Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, the time he had to stop doing his magazine job and just move back to his parent's house because Chicago was too much, etc. Prior to the Chemo thing the worst medical things that happened to Hank were undiagnosed ADHD and ulcerative colitis. Hank being Hank, most of his talk about the colitis are poop jokes. Get well soon Hank. We want the worst thing in your life to be ulcerative colitis.
@@chuchu9649I think the context is mostly just that John has a lot of mental health issues (mostly anxiety related) which he talks about fairly frequently. Also iirc when he was younger and working as a book reviewer he sort of had a "mental breakdown" and had to quit and move home to live with his family for a while to try and recover. I don't think things have ever gotten that bad again but it's not like he's completely cured either.
The sibling energy and the dad jokes are just the perfect amount. I feel so lucky we got two reunion videos in one week, thank you to our internet uncles.

I feel really weird about absolutely loving how great the content here has become. Like, it is not great that Hank has cancer, and yet it keeps producing some of the best things I've ever seen.
I would counter that the attributes we admire in the brothers are on full display right now, for me, the unshakable positive outlook paired with sober reflection seperate them from most of the internet (and most people). These unfortunate circumstances offer an oppurtunity to test whether these traits actually stand up to the stresses of life. I'd say these videos prove that they do. Their character is shining through the screen and I worry for anyone who isn't touched by it. :)

I think it’s more a matter of watching life happen to these guys and seeing how they respond to it is always great to watch. Cancer is just part of life. Silver linings and all that.
Hank’s ability to balance the struggle and peril of his current situation with its use as a catalyst for creativity and joy is the definition of grounded optimism, I think.
Yeah, I'm kind of curious how that works since John and Hank don't really look that similar. I'm guessing the person isn't a regular follower but just saw Hank talking about his diagnosis on TikTok and maybe he's the kind of guy who just prays for everyone.
As a French person : we do usually use "bon vivant" to qualify someone who likes eating and drinking well. Although the phrase on its own doesn't have this connotation, I'm all for broadening the meaning haha.
I think when i hear someone is Bon vivant, I always think they mean the person is very positive. Someone who loves life. Never really associated the term with food and alcohol. Tough im from Quebec. Maybe its just not the same in France.

I think that's what pulled me to these brothers back when I started watching in like 2007. They just remind me so much of myself and my brother, even though he lives on another continent. Makes me wish I could keep in touch and remain closed like they do.
As someone who became intensely troubled at two, I feel ya, John. My mother had to ban Christmas movies in our house for a few years, because I had an existential crisis from Frosty the Snowman and was distraught that no adult reindeer protected Rudolph.

I swear I distinctly remember Hank bringing up that they don't say "like/subscribe/share/etc" because they didn't want the community to get too big and become a potentially unruly mass (or something similar). And it made sense because bigger communities are likely to lose a bit of the cohesion that a community like Nerdfighteria has and for Hank and John it really is the community that matters
I also think that the community did approach that during the TFIOS era (also because of the age of a lot of those new people (one of which was me😅)) so they saw what could happen and realized the vlog brothers community was too good to give up for just bigger subscriber numbers
It’s interesting. For most healthy people that have to go through chemo, it’s pure suffering; but once it is done, they can forget what the pain truly felt like. For Hank, because of his underlying chronic health issues, he can see chemo through a different lens. I’ve dealt with a similar perspective. It’s almost like you are a sommelier of suffering. Like, “hmm my tastebuds hurt. That’s a new weird one” as you carry on with your day. People who have chronic problems and weird symptoms don’t get the luxury of being able to forget them, it’s entrenched in our memory. So it’s fascinating to see I’m not the only one that can spin it into something interesting or funny.
Hank and John are my two favorite people I have never met. Like they make my life better, and every time I see one of their videos my day feels better for having watched it.
I swear to god, these two are the perfect mix between their gen and the other two gens that came after it. Gen z, specially. We desperately need a message of hope in the face of adversity, one that understands and doesn’t undermine the challenges we’re going through, while also doing its best to not fall into despair. That is exactly what Hank and John do. Thank you guys. Really. 💖

I love how Hank’s editing style is more snappy and clearly influenced by other social media, but he still took John’s path of putting pictures over his brother’s face as revenge for John’s video😂 also “STOLEN VALOR” really got my oh my gosh
the INSTANT john said “[he] was like ’are you who i think you are?’” i _knew_ it was gonna be one of those situations again where the one brother is confused for the other. i know this is such a dark situation for it to happen, but i couldn’t help but laugh hysterically when the “my family and i are praying for you” dropped and i was vindicated in my assumption.
Well, I just subscribed. I was diagnosed with nasalpharyngeal carcinoma last Oct. Went through 35 radiation treatments, Covid, bad hospital food and presently doing chemo. Not out of the woods yet but showing improvement and being hopeful. Probably permanent vision damage as a result of the tumour as well. Hank, thank you for sharing your experiences and your attitude towards this new identity "thrusted" upon you. You have said almost everything I have thought and felt about having cancer. You've said it better and that's why I've subscribed. I wish you well in your treatments and live each day with as much vitality you can bring that day. Your boat holds one person but you have many people like myself riding the river on their own boat with beside you. I'll try not to bump you with my boat!😂 John, your description on how others treat a person with cancer is spot on. I had a weird feeling from a person and just couldn't shake it. Your words helped me see better and it allowed me to have compassion for him and let it go. I wish him well to take care of himself on his journey while I have my journey. I don't think I've shrieked so loud and so long since hearing Hank's "stolen valor" all my animals are running around, the house is chaotic I have tears streaming down my face. It's a good time
@kyrab7914 I have family. They are just very selfish. My aunt just makes the care for my mom 5x harder after an outing by allowing mom to heft her walker in/out of car. Maybe my cousin will help after seeing mom in person tomorrow. But ty for your kind reply. It is hard being undiagnosed ADHD and autistic, disabled by chronic pain and COPD, and the sole caretaker of my elderly, deteriorating mom.

I love all the activity in the background. It shows their quirky personalities and how they are perfectly them without false imperfection. Without needing to have perfect lighting or a perfect backdrop. These guys are a pleasure to watch. And for some reason, it warms my heart when John says, "Okay Hank, see ya next week". Thanks guys❤
Hearing that Hank had an interest in comedy or wants to try it, makes me feel a bit happy about wanting to try new things. It's never too late to try new things and you two remind me of that constantly.
Fun fact, a girl I was babysitting for wanted cereal but was out of her milk substitute. I asked if she wanted to try coconut water and she said YES and loved it. Another member of the water cereal army for you, John.
I ran out of milk once when the only thing I had that could be breakfast with cereal, and, in desperation, and thinking about John, I put water on it. It wasn’t inedible. But it wasn’t good.
I’ve really been struggling to watch your videos not because you’re doing anything wrong but because I remember going through everything Hank is going through and it’s just still hard to remember, even after 24years. I turned 40 today. 40! I’ve gotten so many extra years.
I get exactly what Hank said, my mom passed away from pancreatic cancer last month. Yeah I knew it was coming and what people said it was going to be like but you just cant understand until you are sitting in it. Hugs to you both and the tree and your dad for working on the tree.
Hey, no prayer is ever wasted. And, you know, I would expect that watching someone you adore have cancer is less bad than having cancer. But it is still nice to be prayed for when someone you adore is sick.

It’s ok, Hank, the first time I heard bon vivant uttered aloud was in the song “American Tune” by Paul Simon. I even studied French in high school, yet today was the second time I've heard someone else use that phrase and the first time I thought about its meaning, so kudos for learning and sharing knowledge. I wish I had found you years ago, but now I have about 15 years of your videos, on all of your channels, to watch and learn from. When I was 14 I was already a nerdfighter and LOVED the video hank put out about him being in target for 24 hours so I begged my family to take a vacation to Missoula to see the TARGET. And we did and had a pretty amazing time. Turns out Missoula is beautiful

My dad was diagnosed with cancer recently, and your videos have been really helping me. Especially because your diagnosis came a few weeks earlier, and in retrospect it meant I was in a 'thinking about cancer' head space and I was a little more prepared. I'm going to need to find a way to work in that corgi butt joke. 'This sucks, and we don't need to add in a 'but.' It's okay to just acknowledge that it sucks, because it sucks. But if we added a but it would be a corgi butt.' I also love that Hank said 'it would be this butt' because when they were filming it, they didn't have an edited-in corgi butt. He just randomly said 'it would be this butt' and John had to just go with it until he clarified that he meant a corgi butt. Damn, shows how much he's used to doing youtube. So accustomed to editing that he just confidently says 'this' and knows he'll put in a picture later.
When I grow up (I’m 36 soon) I want to be a counsellor and I want a nice house in a town near where I grow up, and more dogs. Right now, I have a small home a bit further away from where I grew up, but I do have the husband, kids and dog of m dreams. So it could be a lot worse! One day I will grow up though…. Maybe?

I am having a hard time finding if there is some sort of word or phrase for this whole "it was explained to me perfectly and yet nothing could have prepared me for this" type of life experience. I feel thus way about so many things in life, surely there is a word for it.
