I like this theory. Also when at the end both parents come to comfort him, Bonbon turns into (or turns out to be) a normal mice. That might explain the title, as in, "your parents love you" Come to think of it, only two scenes where Bonbon being malicious to him. Bonbon eating all the cake maybe him overeating to cope hearing his parents fighting over the phone on his birthday (thus ruining his birthday party), then just make a mess. The second one is nightmare when his dad didn't come home, he might be worried that they got divorced. So when it turns out his dad did come home he was relieved.

Well, if this is supposed to be a german fairytale, then I can tell you that it fits. Most german fairytales are set in medieval times (where most people where married with like 14 years of age) and pretty fucked up. I mean, we have girls who cut some parts of their feet to fit into shoes, the bad queen that has to dance in hot iron shoes until she dies, someone falling into thorns and becoming blind and goblins who try to get you to sell your firstborn baby to them. Xiaki I'm pretty sure of that as well. Everything points to the way the kid sees Bonbon being his imagination. The biggest clue, of course, is the door that appears where there wasn't one before, but there's also the fact that Bonbon seemingly knocks down a fence in the first part without the parents noticing. Maybe the reason he sees Bonbon as a monster is also because he hears his parents yelling at each other, and because of the story he's afraid that means he'll be taken away by a rat?

A game theory! all jokes aside though that is a good theory... and good god this game gave me the sensation of being a bit sick and scared at the same time... not gonna play it myself that's for sure.

Obviously it's a tragedy for the kid, but I feel bad for the rat as well. The poor thing probably got returned to the pet shop or animal shelter the same day, even though it didn't do anything wrong.

Chelsie Pierce I totally agree. I don’t think it’s the Dad physically, but it definitely alludes to the parents at the very least, and heavily implies something towards the father. The first two times don’t have any specific connection, but for the cake and bedroom, it’s at the same time that the Dad is missing, or arguing with Mom. And it’s implied from the mom’s reaction that the mouse is the Dad’s (maybe got it before the divorce?). Bonbon doesn’t immediately frighten the kid, and even “helps” with the toys, but progressively gets worse (greedier, intimidating). The bedtime story is rife with people being horrible to each other and going back on promises, though I think the fact that a Dad would tell a story like that to the kid is a strong implication of what person he is. If all/most of that is true, then Bonbon just the father in either the kid’s or story’s eyes:a giant rodent.

Bon bon could be a bratty sibling, or a pet rodent from the kid's perspective.

I believe the story is just to put the player on edge, as a Horror Game element. I thought about it while making my theory, but it just can't fit in. It does make me very curious as to why they implemented it, though.

Rose Petals It said the family had a baby named Engel (I think that's how it's spelled) and then the rat in the story was name Engel. That makes me think the Gypsies did something to Engel to turn him into that rat, since Hans never found him and the rat knew where the Gypsies were. I'm not sure what his motives would be to make him come back to the house and save Hans or to marry what would be his sister, but you may be able to make some sort of assumption.

That makes sense because studies show when people go through something traumatizing very very young, they tend to replace the humans with animals. Like in Sherlock for instance.

Yeah I got really strong vibes of abuse/neglect coping from the Bonbon situation even before we heard the story on the cassette player. What's striking, too, is the role of the mother. She constantly turns a blind eye to what's happening, surrounding her child with toys and speaking from afar instead of having real interactions. In the cassette story, she's simply dead. Might as well be.

But honestly, I think Bonbon is the stepdad. The parents are clearly separated, and the mother is complacent with surveillance, she acts like there is another adult around to look out. Also, it's pretty obvious how when you're in your bed, then you hear adults shouting, then Bonbon appears. It's a classic scenario of taking revenge on the child for issues with the mother.

I think any theory is "correct" as soon as it does not contradict what you see in the game. Like, "what is he doing in here" could be said also when you find your older kid in your younger kid's room, granted the older has his own room and should probably not give his younger brother a visit in the middle of the night when both are supposed to be sleeping, and should certainly not be trying to grab him from under his bed. ... then the mom sais "take it downstairs". I don't think a mom would refer to one of her kid as "it" so the pet rat theory certainly is more correct. Yet the abuse theory is still interesting at some point, it is not "crap" at all. Dark and unsettling, sure, but not "crap". I mean, the german fairy tale the kid listens to is pretty messed up and there's incest, bestiality and abuse in it. It is no proof whatsoever that the kid you play as has been abused themself, but still the game obviously puts some aspects of it right in front of you. Mark wasn't the only one uneased when he had to take the rat's "little man" in his tiny hand. The "truth" could be as simple as the pet rat's theory, but the game is made so your imagination brings up more twisted explanation to it. As it should. Cuz it's a horror game and as a horror game, it calls to your own discomfort and fears no matter what "truth" is behind all of this. You're free to believe the pet rat's theory either cuz it makes more sense to you or because it rationalizes AND puts you more at ease, well, others are free to believe the darker theory since it makes more sense to them and rationalizes the whole stuff too. Even if the "put it downstairs" pretty much gave it away. But still dark theory is ok to me.
