The Mamodo Battles game for PS2 and Gamecube was released right around the time that the dub of Zatch Bell hit its peak, so it goes without saying that a lot of care was put into this game compared to its follow-up title "Mamodo Fury". While Mamodo Fury is still insanely fun and unique in its own right, the combat depth of Mamodo Battles and quality dubbed voice acting (for the most part) makes this a must-have Zatch Bell game for anyone who grew up watching the English version!
This thorough how-to-play video will step you through every nook and cranny of this game's mechanics, from basic moves to advanced features that often aren't discussed on RU-vid! If you stick around close to the end, you'll even get the rundown on how to use Zatch and Zeno's secret 7th spell that was actually preserved in the English version of the game!

Another tech: Carried over from Bloody Roar and only in both Mamodo Battles and Friendship Tag Battle 2 is the dash-guard-cancel (alongside the same animations and asset flags for getting guard broken by attacks and so forth). Tapping the guard button allows you to cancel your dash animation, especially your backdash for some good distance gain (via some Tekken Korean Backdash shit) as it's easy to both put up and recover from guard inputs very fast. An easier way to partition this for a rapid double or triple dash is upon double-tapping the direction you chose to dash in, quickly tap the guard button (for a near-split-second) and the character will dash again right afterward mid-dash. It should look something like this: 6[6]>Tap G or 4[4]>Tap G, while 6/forward or 4/back on the second tap is still held. You can even do this quick enough to tap G twice for a rapid-triple dash instead, which may not gain as much distance however. But since the button is also used for defense spells, backdash-cancelling will be cut short no thanks to deployed-projectile spells forcing the button to use a defense spell instead. This is not possible in Friendship Tag Battle 1 and Full Power due to a lack of a guard button. However, one distinct difference between the Bloody Roar series' dashes and the Friendship Tag Battle/Mamodo Battles dashes is that in the very latter (in this vid), you can actually cancel a dash into its opposite direction movement (66>4 or 44>6), which may not be as optimal as guard-dash-cancelling when trying to Korean backdash, but it's still useful for trying to go back to neutral state on a near-dime.

Man, this is too incredible, I almost can't believe it, this is my favorite game, the first game I ever played, at a friend's house and it was the game that made me know about anime, which also became my favorite, but I was never able to play it again, the years went by and I always wished for it again, I won a PS2 last year and I looked for this game desperately, only I never found it, and I just kept wanting it. Until today, I saw the video and I missed the game even more, and I was happy that you will bring his series here on the channel, but then, after a few hours, my parents arrived very excited and said that they finally found him and i think i've never been happier in my life, and now i'll be able to follow the series and play at the same time!!! That's fantastic, I'm so happy for you! Mamodo Battles was my very first Zatch Bell game too, even before Electric Arena! :D I used to play it all the time with a friend who knew nothing about the series but still loved the game because of how fun it was! And that's really cool that you actually won a PS2! And now your parents finally found the game??? To think, all of that happened today on the same day that I uploaded the first of many Mamodo Battles videos on this channel! Next up is the Japanese version of this game, but we'll be cycling around back to Mamodo Battles for the start of Zatch's story mode before you know it! X is a cool name and you can call me it whenever you like! :) I've also been called ZBG by some people as well if you prefer that instead.

The Japanese version had a metric ton of cards comprised of about 16 sets... we only got 4 sets officially made in English, but dedicated fans have been translating them into English to work in the game. Back when the Zatch Bell CCG message boards were still up and running, a lot of fans from the community played the game and one of them shared this discovery while they were fooling around in training mode. I remember being there and was shocked when it turned out the hidden input was true! I wish I could find out who it was so I can credit them, but the forums where this took place have been deleted by Bandai years ago, so it's impossible to check.

What are the differences between the GameCube and PS2 versions? I think I want the GameCube version, but the PS2 version is significantly cheaper. The only thing I've noticed so far from looking at gameplay is that the gears rotating around the character icons in the VS. loading screen don't rotate in the PS2 version, and I think the PS2 loads slower (which might explain why that minor animation was disabled).

There are very few differences between the PS2 and Gamecube versions. I owned the PS2 version physically and the Gamecube version is what I use on the emulator. It's possible that loading times are faster on the Gamecube version, but I'm not entirely sure. In the Japanese version, the loading screen barely appears for a second before it fades into the battle. I noticed that the victory dialogue for Tia and Megumi as well as Zeno and Dufort was re-recorded for some reason. And as you said, the gears don't rotate in the PS2 version. One other thing you might notice is that the PS2 is incapable of loading two voice clips at the same time, so they can never overlap with each other. This means when Kanchome's intro dialogue happens and he says something like "The invincible Folgore and I can take you out in one shot!", Folgore tries to calm Kanchome down and then gets cut off by the opponent's dialogue instead before he can finish saying "Kanchomeee". On the Gamecube version, there's still the possibility of this happening, but more often than not the dialogue will simply overlap and complete on its own.

I don't know if a game with graphics like these can be played on a mobile device... A lot of people keep asking that, but I think smartphones are really only capable of playing the GBA games, not the Gamecube ones like these.

I don't really provide save files, there should be one out there and if not you can always follow my walkthroughs. I do provide the game download link in th description. The only thing I think would be unreasonable for people to have to do without a save file is unlocking Maestro...
