Booby-Trapped Trane tandem 3D-Scroll compressor change out was a real PITA!

It's actually been a while since I did one of these 3-D Scroll comps.
They are already a pain in the a** where you have to tin the steel compressor connections with silver (then you can go over with sil-floss) but this one has had the compressor(s) replaced before and the piping was totally booby-trapped for me!

NOTE: *The theme of this video is that it was a BOBBY-TRAPPED service call* It wasn't posted as a fine moment in HVAC repair. But the opposite. This was an example of how NOT to set up a proper comp changeout. This was a scheduled job (by office and ghetto property management) without all the needed components (compressor piping kit, BOTH compressors changed at same time, etc) as this was a shit low quoted property management job that should have been avoided. The compressors were last welded together with FUBAR piping that should have been replaced last time. But they just wanted it to get up and running. After this I would never try to just "get it done" on a tandem scroll without a new piping kit and everything else needed.

I've done the same compressors before and I found that the pre flux solder from Train really helps a lot. I also tilt the compressor keep the oil level back when soldering. If you dont that oil just burns and you cant get a clean weld .good job!

The orifice was left out on the previous compressor change-out requiring subsequent replacement? I usually re-pipe both compressors. The manifolds were still available last summer. Haven't ventured down that road this season yet. RAUJ if I remember 30 ton was the last one I changed.

I don’t do tandem compressors a lot, mostly have on older 20 ton York units. However I would only ever do both at the same time. If one compressor goes out it’s likely to put the second one on borrowed time. I would always buy them strapped to a tandem plate and use a crane to put them on then roof. If you want to use light commercial HVAC units, it’s going to be expensive to repair. That’s just the way it is.
@hackfreehvac
@hackfreehvac 8 месяцев назад
I guess it depends on the failure. Something that sends debris out might go to the other compressor. Technically anything larger than the filter media should be held at the liquid filter drier. A burn out with a failed ACID TEST would be the time where the other comp is contaminated for sure.
@elBusDriverKC
@elBusDriverKC 8 месяцев назад
@@hackfreehvac Yeah, acid is what I ran into a lot. York used or still uses tandem Bristol compressors. They always seem to burnout and get high acid levels. I can see where if there is no acid, and no metal parts in the system, that a single could be done on a tandem setup without too much concern. Fortunately I mostly deal with single compressor circuits now.

Trane doesn't try to force you to change both compressors on tandem sets anymore. I did a tandem set in a 15 year old York HP though and you couldn't buy a single compressor from York for it. You had to buy a tandem set on a sled already piped together. It was two years ago and they were Bristol recips. I don't know what you do for one like that now. I got one of two tandem sets my local York Parts branch could find haha.

With all of the times the compressor(s) have failed, I wonder how much oil is still lingering out there in the system waiting like an assassin to murder the next one. Anyhow bro, great video as always. We are both here in the greater Phoenix AZ area, and boy, last week here was a bear heat wise. At one point in Gilbert, I saw 122 while driving East on the 60 at Arizona Ave.
@hackfreehvac
@hackfreehvac 3 года назад
And to top it off, this was all through a third part property management/maintenance company that farms out the repair calls to various HVAC companies. And they don't approve the proper repairs nor will they replace an old decrepit unit. So it gets whatever it takes to just get it running. As for the summer heat, this is my first summer to ditch the Desert heat in decades. I am now working 90% inside an office now with some site visit calls. The only bad thing is less HVAC footage for my channel now.

Looks like the same garbage I work on lol trying to scrap copper together to make it all function coherently. Nothings harder than trying to redo someone else's copper to steel braze joint especially if they didn't use the right brazing rod to begin with. Someone mentioned the blue rods. That's what I'm mostly using for copper/steel or copper brass. It's coated with flux but I still use stay-silv with it.

I am working on an Intellapack with the exact same piping configuration . I need to go back and finish the 1b compressor and the suction line is also damaged . Did you use an 1-5/8" 90 and cut it off or is that a 45? Super nice job by the way ..

This was years ago so I don't remember. Also this job was one of those 3rd party property management things that limited the hours and costs... so the other tech that quoted it got me stuck doing this without all the materials to make it go smoothly. Trane sells a full pipe kit. They also recommend replacing both compressors together to prevent contamination to the one new comp from the trash in the comp left in it.

@@hackfreehvac Nice we just got finished with a similar job where another contractor replaced a single compressor and shortly after the 2nd went out. We got the task of replacing the 2nd one and opted to get all the piping to avoid the butchery that had already been done to the piping. Lol By far one of the worst compressor change outs I've had to do so far.

Missing handcuff bracket between the two scrolls? Brazing the dissimilar metals at the compressor is challenging but very doable; most techs go in brazing too hot. Lower heat and slower approach with 45% or 56% flux coated brazing rods. Get the steel too hot and you’ll need to cut the torch off and try again.

This was so booby-trapped. It would also be nice to have the re pipe kit but you have to order those in advance and people want it fixed now. Sucks. Oh and this was property management. The kind that under pays and you wonder why your employer even mothers with them?

Why would oil not come back to compressor, i replace both compressor but oil is not coming back to compressor to the point of motor locking up
@hackfreehvac
@hackfreehvac 2 месяца назад
A few reasons possibly. You have a vertical lift without a double riser. Especially needed when only one compressor is running and you lose velocity to lift the oil. Also possible piping issue at the indoor coil. Oil log in inside coil. Etc
@josecedillo613
@josecedillo613 2 месяца назад
@@hackfreehvac evaporator is at compressor level in same compartment, the only high spot is the rise of inlet of condenser. But pressures don't show a restriction. Thank you!
@hackfreehvac
@hackfreehvac 2 месяца назад
@@josecedillo613 Other issues are too large of a suction pipe. They say R410 and the oil do not mi. At all. So the velocity of the R410 gas is all you got to carrying the oil back. The larger the suction pipe the slower the velocity. Only increase suction from the minimum if you have long lines. Also, if your unit stages down to one compressor, you could be losing it in the evap if all circuits stay active and the velocity is down. So adding a LLSV to half the circuits when only one compressor is running will maintain the same higher velocity thru the one active coil. 👍👍
